Re: Old tapes
#1, what's your retention for this data if you don't need it reuse the tapes. #2 if they aren't at 100% do "move data" on them to free up the tapes that way. #3 if your solution calls for long term storage then just check them out and you should be good to go. -Original Message- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Dave Zarnoch Sent: Wednesday, March 30, 2005 10:17 AM To: ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU Subject: Old tapes Oh mighty Gurus. I have a couple tapes that are in Dbackup and I would like to change to scratch status I tried using update library volume using the TSM Gui and received the following message ANR8443E UPDATE LIBVOLUME: Volume N00275 in library IBM3494R cannot be assigned a status of SCRATCH. The DBbackup volume has a date of 12/23/03. So that data is not valid Anyone ever had a tape problem like this? Thanks in advance!
Re: MOVE DATA wants some other tapes
Either look in the logs or have a console running at the same time when you attempt the move data. The addtional tapes required will write to either the log or the console. -Original Message- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Richard Sims Sent: Friday, December 10, 2004 9:08 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: MOVE DATA wants some other tapes On Dec 10, 2004, at 9:57 AM, Tuncel Mutlu (B.T.B.S.V.Y.G.) wrote: > ...How can I understand if the tape to move will ask for > another tape and which tape it will ask ? For full use of volumes, and where files may even be larger than volumes, TSM will span a file (Aggregate) from one volume to another as it fills one volume and goes on to another. You can use 'Query CONTent F=D Count=1' on the subject of your Move Data to see if it starts with data which spans from another volume (and Count=-1 to see if it spans to another vol). There is no ready way to determine what the other volume is, short of initiating the Move Data, or researching the Activity Log for when the volume transition occurred. Richard Sims

The look and feel of the GUI has changed, most of my scripts won't work now so I have just begun to dig into what changes have disabled them and the SA's indicated that there is new reporting functionality built into this latest patch (but as of yet I've been unable to find what that is). -Original Message- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Stapleton, Mark Sent: Wednesday, October 13, 2004 11:01 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Version 5, Release 2, Level 3.2 From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Owings, Don >Hi list. A number of months ago (before I joined my current team) my manager made the decision to increase the data retention period for our tape library from 3 months to 6 months. (I guess this is done at the management class level?) This decision was made without considering if we had enough tapes in our library to support the move, and is it turned out, we did not! My tape machines are nearly empty, and there are only a small handful of 3590's I can put in the machines which do not show up in a "q vol" report ... and all this is happening right before our monthly archive backups which are scheduled to run this coming Saturday night. On to my question... I need to start freeing up tapes with data older than 5 months. It seems to me that the way to accomplish this is with the "delete volume" command. However, when I execute this command versus a tape, I get the following message: * ANR1425W Scratch volume 000101 is empty but will not be deleted - volume state is "mountablenotinlib". * Here's the volume history for this tape: * Volume Name: 000101 Storage Pool Name: AIXPOOL Device Class Name: 3590TAPE01 Estimated Capacity (MB): 0.0 Pct Util: 0.0 Volume Status: Empty Access: Read-Only Pct. Reclaimable Space: 0.0 Scratch Volume?: Yes In Error State?: No Number of Writable Sides: 1 Number of Times Mounted: 1 Write Pass Number: 1 Approx. Date Last Written: 02/23/04 08:46:58 Approx. Date Last Read: 02/23/04 05:13:52 Date Became Pending: Number of Write Errors: 0 Number of Read Errors: 0 Volume Location: Last Update by (administrator): ADMIN Last Update Date/Time: 02/23/04 22:20:38 * So basically, what I need to do is free up tapes such as the one above so that my 3494's will turn them into scratch volumes again. I couple of things confuse me here though. First, the tape above is already older than 6 months (or 180 days, which is what the retention period is set at), so why does it still show up on the "q vol" report? I'm assuming that any tape which shows up when you do a "q vol" won't be turned into a scratch volume. That would seem to be confirmed by this output from my "label" command: * ANR8816E LABEL LIBVOLUME: Volume 000101 in library 3494LIB cannot be labelled because it is currently defined in a storage pool or in the volume history file. * How do I get this tape out of the volume history file? I'm assuming this is an issue with the volume history file, as opposed to an issue with this tape being defined in a storage pool ... but maybe I'm wrong about that. We have a half dozen or so storage pools that our scratch tapes can get assigned to. As a side note, I have tapes on my "q vol" report which were written to last in 2003. Shouldn't those tapes age off that report if the backup copy group variable "Versions Data Exists" is set to 180? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm about to enter panic mode as I see the number of usable tapes in my library dwindle. As always, thank you, Chris Hund Tivoli/Unix Admin Fiserv Health
Re: Select for Tape Use
Why you ask? Because I'm having to justify ordering tapes and in order to do that I have to organize the data in order create some type of forecasting. What I'm looking for is a down and dirty select statement that just shows the previous nights usage. Maybe it's in TSM but I haven't found it, plus I'm dealing with TB's of data so I need it consolidated. Hope that clarifies what I'm trying to do. Select for Tapes
This may have already been posted previously, so I apologize if it's a repeat. I'm looking for a select statement that shows exactly what tapes were used the previous night and what was written to the tapes. I get the system generated report, but it's not very clear exactly what tapes are used for what. I'm suspecting this has come across before as this is my fourth attempt at posting, as I've been rejected each time. I can't handle the rejection anymore, this is my last time. Thanks in advance. Don

Hey group, I would like to expand on this thread. I have several duplicate files that were inadvertantly saved to tape that are not saved exclusively to dedicated tapes, meaning they are striped among files I need to retain. Does anyone know if the delete volume command allows for deleting specific files on a tape. I used the delete archive but this only removed it from the database and the files still reside on the tapes which I'd like to free up to be used for scratch.
