Re: Issue restoring SQL database via TDP

2017-11-01 Thread Paul_Dudley
Hi Andy,

In the Windows client GUI there is no replace option. I selected the Restore to
Alternate location option.
Under that are the options:

Restore to original database
Restore to new database (select Instance and enter the database name)

Restore to original location
Restore files to all one directory (then you can browse and select the location
to restore to)
Relocate files individually (you can then edit the logical name, path & file
name if you want)

I chose to restore to a new database and relocate the files individually (and
modify the file name to restore over)

Thanks & Regards
Paul

Issue restoring SQL database via TDP

2017-10-31 Thread Paul_Dudley
I was trying to restore an SQL database from one server (production) to another
server (test) and over the top of a database with a different name.

On the production server the database is called "InterfaceLoggingProduction".
On the test server the database I was trying to restore over the top of is
called "InterfaceLoggingProdHoldRestore".

The databases are backed up using Legacy, not VSS. I was using the TDP for SQL
client on a Windows server to perform the restore. I selected the options to
manually enter the new database name, and to select the locations of the
database and log files. The error I kept running into was:

An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch.

The backup set holds a backup of a database other than the existing
'InterfaceLoggingProdHoldRestore' database.

RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally.

In the end I had to restore the database from the production server to the test
server and use the same database name. Is it not possible to restore over the
top of a different named database?

Increase resourcetimeout TSM 6.3

2017-07-11 Thread Paul_Dudley
How do you increase the resourcetimeout value in TSM 6.3? From the TSM
Administrative Command Line I have run the command "resourcetimeout 120"
however this fails with an unknown command error.

I have checked the dsmserv.opt file on the server but there is no mention of a
resourcetimeout parameter in the file.

Backing up Active Directory server using TSM client

2016-11-07 Thread Paul_Dudley
Is there any point in backing up an Active Directory server using the TSM
client? Would a restore of Active Directory work? I have read conflicting views
on this - some say it would not work yet others say it has worked for them,
while others say that they use another tool to backup Active Directory and then
use TSM to backup those backup files.

Making use of two NICs

We have TSM v6.3 running on an IBM x3650 M4 server with Windows 2008. The

If we configure and connect the second NIC, is it possible to make use of it so
that TSM network traffic (ie: backups) could be spread across the two NICs?

Re: query auditocc question

2016-08-10 Thread Paul_Dudley
To all,

It appears that I have solved this problem. The issue was that the "expire
inventory" command was not running to completion.
It was being run with a duration parameter which did not allow it to complete
the expire inventory of all nodes.

Does it total just the primary storage or all storage pools?

Re: query auditocc question

2016-08-01 Thread Paul_Dudley
Thanks David - I ran the second command which provided me with a report.
However the figures in that report match what I already receive from the query
auditocc command.
This makes me think that there is something wrong with the data that it is
reporting on. There are two SQL database servers for which the reported data
appears to be obviously wrong.

For one of them the reported primary storage pool data has increased over the
past 4 weeks from 2.3Tb, to 4.5Tb, to 7.0Tb and now this week it is 9.1Tb.
We have not increased the number of backups kept, and we have not added any new
SQL databases.
When I start the DP for SQL client and add up all the active and inactive
databases which I can restore from, the total amount of data is 2.3Tb.

On another SQL server, the reported primary storage pool data has increased
over the past 4 weeks from 310Gb, to 610Gb, then 950Gb and now it is 1300Gb.
When I start the DP for SQL client and add up all the active and inactive
databases which I can restore from, the total amount of data is around 310Gb.

It is as if each week the amount of primary storage pool data is being added to
rather than replaced. However this is only happening for SQL database servers.
For other non-database servers the amount of reported primary storage pool data
has been stable.

Where is this the information for this reported primary storage pool data kept?
Is it on our TSMADMIN server somewhere?

Thanks & Regards
Paul

You are right. All of my data is in primary storage pools so I no longer worry

distinguish between primary and copy pool?

If so,

select node_name,sum(reporting_mb) as "TOTAL_OCCUPANCY" from occupancy group by

Alternatively,

select node_name,sum(reporting_mb) as "TOTAL_OCCUPANCY" from occupancy where

However knowing the size of the databases on that server and the number of
copies of each backup we keep, I believe that to be incorrect.

I started the DP for SQL client on that server, clicked on Restore Data, and
then selected all backups (both active and inactive).

I then added up the size of each backup (both active and inactive) and it added
up to 2.2Tb.

How could there be such a huge difference between each total?

Thanks & Regards

Thanks - this has been fixed. I had to use the information from the tsmdlst

I then halted and restarted the TSM service and started an audit of the library
which is running OK.

Hello Paul,

you are not using persistent names for the devices, and chances are that after
the reboot the devices got different names.
check the actual device names with

c:\program files\tivoli\tsm\server\tsmdlst

and update the pathes to the library and the drives accordingly.
"show libray" should report an online=1 in the 3rd line.

tsm: TSMANL>show library

MMSV->libList: head=0537E930, tail=0537E930

Library LB0.1.0.6 (type SCSI):

  refCount=0, online=0, updateCount=0

If possible, enable sandiscovery:

setopt sandiscovery on

or read the devicedriver documentation of the IBM Tape driver on how to enable
persistent naming, which makes life much easier.

Moving nodes to a new policy

2015-06-04 Thread Paul_Dudley
If I have nodes that are currently under a policy that keeps 5 backup versions,
can I move them to another policy which keeps only 2 backup versions?

Will TSM then start expiring all the older backup versions of files which are
no longer needed?

We have two nodes which are taking up a lot of backup space in TSM and want to
reduce this.

Change from PVU to Unified licensing

We have recently changed from PVU based licensing to the Unified/Terabyte based
licensing model on TSM.

What do I need to do on the TSM system itself to update the licensing? Is there
a file that needs to be updated or a command that needs to be run?

When I run q lic it is still showing the old licensing type.

TDP Flashcopy - restore to alternate location

2014-04-09 Thread Paul_Dudley
We have TSM v6.3. On two Windows 2012 64bit servers we have the TDP Storage
Flashcopy manager v3.2.1.0 client.

Both of these servers run MS SQL Server 2012.

I would like to restore databases backed up on one server to the other. The
databases are backed up using the tdpsqlc backup * full command, which runs
via Windows Task Scheduler.

To restore databases backed up on one server to the other I first change the
dsm.opt file in the TDPSql folder - making the nodename the node from which I
am restoring the databases from.

I then start the DP for SQL Management Console which in turn opens the TDP
Storage Flashcopy manager window.

My problem occurs when I select a database and then select Restore Alternate
Location. In the settings window I click on Restore to a new database,
however the option to relocate files individually is greyed out.

When restoring from other servers when I click on Restore to a new database I
see the green progress bar appear at the bottom of this settings window and
then TSM displays the location of the database file and log file on the source
server.

This does not happen on this occasion.

Is there a setting when trying to restore (or when backing up the original
files) that has to be changed? There is an option to relocate all the files to
one location however this is not suitable as the database file and log file
need to be restored to different drives.

Thanks Regards

Paul

More research and testing on the issue below seems to indicate that I have to
change the backup type from VSS to Legacy to fully enable the Restore Alternate
Location option on the target server.

Thanks Regards
Paul

When restoring from other servers when I click on Restore to a new database I
see the green progress bar appear at the bottom of this settings window and
then TSM displays the location of the database file and log file on the
 source server.
This does not happen on this occasion.

Is there a setting when trying to restore (or when backing up the original
files) that has to be changed? There is an option to relocate all the files
to one location however this is not suitable as the database file and log
file need to be restored to different drives.

Error when installing TSM client on RHES 5.7

2012-09-12 Thread Paul_Dudley
Hi all,

I am trying to install the TSM client on Red Hat linux version ES 5.7.
TIVsm-API-5.2.0-0 has installed OK via the rpm command however I have run into
the problem below:

rpm -i TIVsm-BA.i386.rpm

error: Failed dependencies:

libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2 is needed by TIVsm-BA-5.2.0-0.i386

libXp.so.6 is needed by TIVsm-BA-5.2.0-0.i386

Any suggestions? I assume there are some other linux packages I have to install?

Thanks Regards

Re: Excessive number of filling tapes...

2012-02-06 Thread Paul_Dudley
Re your line None of them has data from more than one client

Has collocation been turned on by accident?

Thanks Regards
Paul

So, I've got an offsite machine which exists to accept remote virtual
volumes. For years, now, the filling volumes have behaved in a way I
 thought I understood.

The tapes are collocated by node. There are about 20 server nodes which
 write to it.

My number of filling volumes has rattled around 50-60 for years; I
interpret this as basic node collocation, plus occasional additional
tapes allocated when more streams than tapes are writing at a time. So
some of the servers have just one filling tape, some have two, and the
busiest of them might have as many as 6 (my drive count).

Add a little error for occasionally reclaiming a still-filling volume,
and that gives me a very clear sense of what's going on, and I can just
 monitor scratch count.

Right now, I have 190 filling volumes.

None of them has data from more than one client.

I have some volumes RO and filling, and am looking into that, but it's
20 of them, not enough to account for this backlog. Those are also the
 only vols in error state.

I've been rooting through my actlogs looking for warnings or errors, but
I've never had occasion to introspect about how TSM picks which tape to
call for, when it's going to write. It's always Just Worked.

Does this ring any bells for anyone?Any dumb questions I've
forgotten to ask? I don't hold much hope for getting a good experience
out of IBM support on this.

It's likely you're getting the files captured by the client even with the db
 open. Try
to exclude them in the inclexcl, or associate them with the right management
 class.

'Query occupancy' for the TDP node should list everything in the right storage
 pool.

Take a look in the BA client gui and hunt down the database files - that will
 tell you
if they are being stored. If you can see them as individual files, and
 you've not
made a cold backup of the database, then that's the issue. You can delete
 them
from the ba client if you wish and are sure they're not wanted.

I checked the BA GUI and the database files are not being backed up. However
when I ran q occupancy I can see that these node names for these SQL database
backups are in the wrong storage pool - BKPLTO4POOL. When I query these node
names the platform is TDP MSSQL Win32, and the Optionset is SQL_SERVERS. Note
that it is not all of the SQL servers that are this way, some show the correct
Storage Pool via the q occupancy command.

How can I change the SQL Servers that are incorrect to be backed up into the
correct storage pool?

Offsite copypool question

2012-01-16 Thread Paul_Dudley
We have a linux shell script which we use to create our offsite copypool tapes.
Basically the commands are:

backup stg SQLDB_LTO4 SQLDB_COPYPOOL wait=yes

backup stg BKPLTO4POOL COPYPOOL_LTO3 wait=yes

Our primary SQL storage pool is SQLDB_DISKPOOL and it's secondary pool for data
migration is SQLDB_LTO4.

Our primary backup storage pool is BKPPOOL and it's secondary pool for data
migration is BKPLTO4POOL.

However I am finding that backups of SQL databases are also somehow ending up
in the BKPLTO4POOL storage pool because they are then in turn being backed up
into the COPYPOOL_LTO3 storage pool.

The reason I know this is that these SQL databases are very large files with
very distinctive (but consistent) sizes so as soon run q pr and see the
process copying a 185 Gb file from the BKPLTO4POOL storage pool to the
COPYPOOL_LTO3 storage pool I know which SQL database file that is.

On the SQL servers I have included the SQL database folder in the
Exclude-Include configuration of the normal TSM backup setup. (these databases
are backed up using TDP for SQL) As well as that, SQL is running all the time
so the normal TSM backup client would never be able to get a lock on these
database files. I already have a backup of these SQL databases in the
SQLDB_LTO4 storage pool and therefore a copy is in the SQLDB_COPYPOOL storage
pool so I don't need another copy in BKPLTO4POOL and COPYPOOL_LTO3

Any idea how I can work out why a backup copy of these SQL database backups are
ending up in BKPLTO4POOL and stop this from happening?

Paul

 V5 or V6?

With version 5, the CONTENTS table and the BACKUPS tables are both indexed
reasonably well. BACKUPS has the size and might be all you need.

Version 6? The BACKUPS view (table?) doesn't have enough indices on it to be
useful. A colleague at work is trying to dare me to use DB2 to look at the

Re: Copypool storage advice

2011-04-12 Thread Paul_Dudley
I believe I have found the problem. The maximum number of scratch volumes
allowed was set to 40 and it had reached this limit which was causing the
reclaimation process to fail. I have increased the maximum number of scratch
volumes allowed and restarted the reclaimation process.

Thanks Regards
Paul

 -Original Message-

It's been a while since I've worked much with off-site copypools, but my next
suggestion is to work with DRMedia. Do you have some volumes (that have been
reclaimed) in VAULTRETRIEVE status? I don't remember how they show up in your
volume list (I half expect 'EMPTY' status, but as I said, it's been a while),
 but if you
do, they might be returned to scratch status when you MOVE DRM the VAULTRET
 volumes back to ONSITERET.

How many BACKUP STG processes are you running at a time? If you run four
backup processes at a time, you'll produce four tapes each day, even if one
 would
be enough. That might be contributing to this phenomenon.

 You said these volumes are set as offsite; that's at the volume level;
 volumes are
the only things with an offisite status, as I recall. If you do QUERY LIBVOL
 *
volid, do they show up? If TSM knows they're in the library, they won't be
reclaimed if they're in FILLING status, as I recall.

I love a good puzzle. I'm just not sure how many things I'm taking for
 granted about
 how you're using TSM. :-)

The copypool is on LTO3 tapes. They are not database backups just incremental
server backups

Thanks Regards
Paul

 -Original Message-

It would be helpful to know what kind of the tape technology you're using
 since the
reclamation threshold % is usually based off which technology is being used.
Smaller tapes can usually have a small threshold while larger tapes requires a
 larger threshold.

One way to reduce the amount of tapes is simply to reduce the threshold to
something like 30 and let the reclaim process run until it's complete. This
 will require
enough free tape drives to a) let reclamation run until it's complete b) do
 normal
 operations.

There can be several reasons why you get so high pct reclaim. One is that
 you're
running full database or application backups. Since this will expire a full
 backup
every day, it will cause the reclaim on your tapes to rise. Splitting your
 copypool into
separate ones categorized on the type of data stored (one for fileservers,
 one for
application servers for example) is one way to go, using collocation is
 another.

Short answer no. Its all or nothing with copy pools. You can keep just
the last version of each file with an active pool, but you should have a
copy pool as well just in case your primary pool goes bad. You could
send the active pool offsite and keep the copy pool onsite. What are
 you trying to save on?

Re: Deleting ALL tapes from a defunct TSM server from Volhist

2011-01-23 Thread Paul_Dudley
Subject: [ADSM-L] Deleting ALL tapes from a defunct TSM server from Volhist

Back in 2008 there was a thread on forcing the deletion of individual
tapes from a defunct TSM server.

 http://www.adsm.org/lists/html/ADSM-L/2008-06/msg00068.html

 del volhist todate=today type=remote volume=A00229 force=yes

I tried that and it worked as expected.

Now I need to do it 483 more times.

Is there a parameter that lets you designate which remote location to
delete from, so that all the volsers can be deleted at once?

George,

If one of the servers you are backing up via TSM is a linux or unix server you
should be able to create a shell script on that server to run that command.
The script will need to have a do loop into which you can get it to read a
list.

It would need to start like this:

#!/bin/ksh

#Standard TSM Admin command.
DSMADMC=/usr/bin/dsmadmc -id=admin -pa=XX -noconfirm

And then have a line something like this

while read VOL
do
$DSMADMC del volhist todate=today type=remote volume=$VOL force=yes
done /tmp/nodelist

Please check the syntax above before running as this is only a quick example...

Regards
Paul

Re: Copypool storage pool questions

2010-10-21 Thread Paul_Dudley
Thanks for the reply but one thing I am still confused about are these copypool
tapes sitting in my onsite tape library. Given that the primary reason for this
copypool is for offsite tapes, should these copypool tapes currently residing
in my tape library (created by reclaimation processes) be checked out and sent
offsite as well?

Thanks Regards
Paul

A lot of these have a status of Full however they are only 50/60/70% used.

...a reflection of files on the filled tape expiring over time, which
 reclamation will
combine with other data to fill a new tape. Surrogate reclamation tends to
 be quite
slow compared to direct reclamation, where it may not be able to keep up with
 the
need for additional offsite tapes for new data, the result being a
 considerable
demand for the scratch tapes you have in the library, which could account for
 your
issue of running low on scratch tapes.

The only other suggestion that may apply is to verify the devclass Format
 being
used, that it uses compression so as to get the most onto the tapes.

Running reclamation is not an issue. Generally I run it when my scratch
tapes go below my threshold limit.

Is BKPLTO4POOL stg pool is it a copy pool or primary pool?

Each weekday morning we run the following command backup stg
BKPLTO4POOL COPYPOOL_LTO3 to backup the data that has been backed up
overnight onto LTO3 tapes and then checkout these LTO3 tapes and send
them offsite. I have a reclaimation process running on a daily basis for
the COPYPOOL_LTO3 storage pool. However this process is using up scratch
tapes that are within the tape library at an alarming rate and I am
starting to run low on scratch tapes.

 Am I doing something wrong?

Should there be a daily reclaimation process running on this offsite
 tape storage pool?

Should these COPYPOOL_LTO3 tapes which are in the tape library be sent
offsite as well as the ones that are sent offsite on a daily basis?

What would happen if I deleted the data on one of these COPYPOOL_LTO3
tapes which are currently in the tape library?

Re: Copypool storage pool questions

2010-10-10 Thread Paul_Dudley
No I do not have collocation turned on for that storage pool. Offsite tapes are
coming back when they are defined as empty after the reclaimation and
expiration processes have done their work. However as part of the reclaimation
process on that storage pool it is using tapes onsite that are in the library.
A lot of these have a status of Full however they are only 50/60/70% used.

Assure that you aren't collocating on the offsite copy pool tapes, and that
 partially
filled tapes are not going offsite - that will certainly eat scratches fast.
 Obviously,
offsite tapes need to come back to provide a replenishing tape supply. Be
 careful
about checking in offsite tapes, as they could end up checking out before
 getting
reclaimed, depending upon your processing. Deleting a copypool tape is
 certainly
legal, but of course you obliterate that safety copy.

Storage Pool Migration

2010-10-06 Thread Paul_Dudley
We have TSM 5.5. Shortly after this was originally setup at the start of this
year data from the DIRMC storage pool was migrated to tape due to the settings
for the DIRMC storage pool not being correct. Now 9 months later the DIRMC
storage pool is still only at 3% of capacity. The migrated data is still on the
tape which is only at 0.2% of capacity. This is basically wasting a tape. What
are my options to free up this tape and make it a scratch tape again? Can I
migrate the data from the tape back to the primary disk pool? From what I have
read it appears not. What happens if I delete the data on the tape? Do I have
any other options?

TSM Copypool question

2010-06-23 Thread Paul_Dudley
We have recently installed TSM 5.5 on a new server and using a new IBM TS3200
tape library.

It took some time to migrate the data over from the tapes used in the old tape
library to the new (migrating data from LTO2 LTO3 tapes to LTO4 tapes) but
that has finally finished.

While that was happening we were performing backups of client servers onto the
new library, but I was not copying the data from the primary tape storage pool
to the copypool to send offsite. I now wish to start this process.

Is it possible to perform full backups of each client now to the primary
storage pool and have the backed up data flagged so that if I start copying the
data from the primary tape storage pool to the copypool via the backup stg
command it will only copy the data from the full backups I do now onwards?

Thanks Regards

Paul

Assign scratch volumes to a device class

2010-05-09 Thread Paul_Dudley
Is it possible to assign scratch volumes to a specific device class? We have
TSM 5.5 with an IBM TS3200 tape library. It has a mixture of LTO4 and LTO3
tapes in it.

Various processes keep using LTO4 scratch tapes when I direct them to use LTO3
tapes, and vice a versa.

For example running the command backup db type=full devclass=lto3class
scratch=yes will write to an LTO4 scratch tape if one is available. Similarly
reclaimation processes on LTO4 tapes will grab an LTO3 scratch tape if one is
available.

ACO5423E TDPsql error

2010-05-06 Thread Paul_Dudley
I am getting an error on a couple of Windows 2003 SP2 servers - one has MS 2005
SQL Express and the other has the full MS 2005 SQL installed.

The TDP SQL client software is version 5.3.3.0 and I have also installed the
22699_4 patch.

The error is - ACO5423E Microsoft ODBC SQL Server Driver DBNETLIB SQL Server
does not exist or access denied.

I have gone into SQL Surface area configuration for Services and Connections
and ensured that Remote Connections are enabled.

Any suggestions?
