Exceeding disk space quotas on Netware restores
Anybody out there have a way of getting around user disk space quotas when doing volume restores (TSA 330 errors)? If you have files that were compressed then the restores often cause these quotas to be exceeded. Is the only method to manually check the users quotas as the restores are running? Upgrading AIX from 4.3.3 ML 10 to AIX 5.2
Hello TSMers We are planning to finally update the AIX version on our RS6000 that is running our TSM server. Currently we are at AIX 4.3.3 ML 10 and we are planning to install AIX 5.2. The TSM server on this box is sitting at TSM 5.1.5.4. Can we simply upgrade to AIX 5.2 and leave the TSM server at 5.1.5.4 for the time being? Would it be beneficial to move to some level of the TSM 5.2.x server? If we are moving to TSM 5.2.x, can we do a one step migration from TSM 5.1.5.4 or are there multiple steps to the upgrade? Any info or experiences would be most appreciated, Take care, Peter Peter Hadikin [EMAIL PROTECTED] Phone: 604-432-8452 Fax: 604-439-6785
What is everybody using for Netware backups as far as versions of TSM and TSA/SMDR
Hello everybody, Netware seems to be the one environment where I find the stars need to be aligned properly for everything to work for backups and restores. I am wondering what version of TSM client and what versions of TSAFS/TSA600/SMDR everybody is using out there for both Netware 6 and Netware 6.5 servers. Anybody have any thoughts or recommendations? Hello Zoltan, Thanks for the feedback. I have been supporting our ADSM/TSM environmnet since 1991/2 and Netware seems to be the only place we have tons of problems with backups and restores. HELP ... trying to backup up files that are 8 Gbytes+ is size on a Netware 6 server from NSS volumes.
We are having great problems backup up lab image files that are 8+ Gbytes in size from a Netware server. I have tried various versions of TSM. The Netware support guys have installed various version of TSAUP ... the current versions we are trying are dated from June of 2004 for both TSAFS and SMDR. They have applied the latest patches to the Netware 6 server, NSS modules have been updated. Yet, when we try backup the 8+ Gbyte files we end up backing up the first 4 Gbytes and that is it. I cannot help thinking that somewhere there is something using a 32 bit integer (4 Gbyte limit = 4 ** 32). If anybody out there backing up a file larger than 4 Gbytes. If yes, I would certainly like to hear from you. Any TSM support people that read this .. please send me an email. It is getting more than a bit frustrating. If I need to include more info, please let me know. Based on the docs, it seems like this should work. Take care, Peter

Netware TSM client V4.2.1.0 reports files with 0 length
I recently installed the TSM 4.2.1.0 client on a couple of our Netware servers. Seems to work fine, even backup up our NDS which has roughly 80,000 entries. My questions is that all the files being backed up are reported as having a length of 0 bytes. The NDS files are the only ones reported at any value other than this (2 meg). Anybody else seen this behaviour? Thanks in advance, Peter
Procedure for migrating TSM from on hardware platform to another.
I posted a note a while back about moving our VM TSM server to an AIX platform. I am wondering if anybody out there has a step by step procedure (or close to it) for carrying out such a task. Is it necessary to export all data and re-import to the new server? If yes, is this not a huge lengthy procedure? Is it possible to 'migrate' directly from the old server to the new server using our network? Any info would be tremendously appreciated. If there are documents out there that I am not aware of, please forward them on to me. Take care and have a super week, Peter
Moving TSM server from VM to AIX
Hello gang, I am looking for some words of wisdom. We are currently starting to plan a move of our ancient TSM 3.1.2.50 server to an AIX TSM 4.x server (not sure what version). I have a few questions: 1) Do I simply backup our db from TSM on VM and restore to TSM on AIX? How long will the backup restore take (our db is about 14GB and about 90 % full). 2) What is the best way to connect our 3494 robotic tape library to our RS/6000 S80 box (SCSI, ESCON, Fiber, other?) 3) Do we need to convert our existing data tapes from VM to AIX somehow? 4) Any other info that would be usefull. Thanks in advance, Peter

If so, then I would recommend backing off to a 4.1 rev of the client. Also, as with any Netware problem, make sure you have the latest TSA nlms, tsa5up7 last time I checked. Are you getting prompted for the Novell username and pwd, or the TSM one? I'm having a problem on our Netware cluster nodes that's similar, scheduled backups run for a couple of nights and then fail because of a prompt for the TSM userid and pwd. This seems to be a problem since I upgraded our server from 3.1.x to 4.1.4. Very frustrating. Stormy Maddux wrote: I have three TSM 4.2.1 Netware 5.0 clients that won't perform a scheduled backup. Netware backups with 4.1.x ... help me ... I'm drowning!!
Hello group, I am about ready to give up ... we have upgraded our Netware 5.x servers to either 4.1.1 or 4.1.2. It is not a pretty site. On both our production NDS tree and our test NDS tree we are experiencing the following problem. I have to say I am at a loss. I see nothing wrong with the TSM install and config. The Netware boys assure me I should have no problems logging into the tree ... yet, here I sit writing this note. Once I receive this error message, I am prompted for a login to the tree and can login successfully with the same id pw. I have some some references to this same problem in past years but nothing recently. Any, and I mean any suggestions could result in a free set of beers next time that individual happens to be in the vicinity of Vancouver or I am in their vicinity ... or, I suppose if we both happen to be in another vicinity. Anybody from ADSM/TSM support or developement ... any thoughts? As you can tell from my note, I am a poor, rattled and desperate soul. Help me! Memory consumption by SMDR.NLM backing up NDS
Hello group, I hope somebody can help me. We are trying to backup our NDS and are running into a problem. As the NDS backs up, the amount of memory 'consumed' by SMDR.NLM grows and grows until no more short term memory can be allocated on the server. Our NDS is relatively large but for the life of me I cannot understand why SMDR keeps eating more and more memory. This has been an ongoing problem for us regardless of versions of software. We are currently running Netware 5 with SMDR.NLM (V5.04), TSANDS.NLM (V5.25), TSA500.NLM (V5.03) and DSMC.NLM (V4.01A). Does anybody out there have a clue how to get around this or do we just sit back and watch Tivoli and Netware point the finger at each other? Any help would be most appreciated. Let me know if you need any more info before you can comment. Thanks, Peter
Problem mounting tape r/o on 3590 drive
Hello, Recently we migrated to a mixed 3490/3590 tape environment. ADSM (V3.1.2.50) is running on VM/ESA V2 R3.0 SL9806. The problem is that when ADSM asks for a tape to be mounted r/o, the robotic unit mounts it r/w and ADSM rejects the tape since it is not r/o. Any idea why this is occurring or how the problem can be remedied. Suggestions would be most appreaciated. Thanks, Peter
