You need new license files , comes with 5.1.0.0 base version.

I'm going to be upgrading from 4.2.x.x to 5.1.x.x. The migration
documentation in one part says I will need to register new license keys and
in another part says I won't need to. Do any of you who have migrated from
4.2 to 5.1 remember if you needed new keys?

Thanks.

Re: 100% cpu occupied by dsmserv

Geetha,
Are you running web browser? or do you see any session with "?" in TSM
Server console - probable causes for CPU 100%.
Further, there is an apar for the cpu 100% problem IC28613.
Ignore the above comments, if you TSM level is above 4.2.1. Pinning of CPU
time by dsmserv happens due to ghost session in TSM. you can always give a
try stop/start dsmserv , if you can afford downtime.
Still need some assistance , send me snap shot of ur process (unix level).
Stgpools issue, storage pool (default is backuppool) setup in ur TSM server
seems to be full.
you can setup next storage pool (may be a tape / DSAD pool) to migrate
storage pool data , this must solve your storage full problem provided if
you dont have space contraint.
Hope this help you.

Yes you can ! All u need to have is restore your 'db' on development box.
You must note as long as you have ACTLOGRETNETION set to 14 days or so,
your earlier db also contains 14days of logs only. only thing you can have
form the old db is back 14days from the date you restore your db.

Hi,
The reason why you get only 2 weeks old act log records, probably, is the
retention period defined for activity log is 14 days. So, there are no more
records in act log. Try to use SET ACTLOGRETENTION admin command to change
it. Take into account that it influences DB size, because act log is
actually a DB table.

User Response: It is possible that

Hi George

I am soon to be doing the very same upgrade. I'm running TSM Server 3.7.3.8
on a Solaris box.

Did you go directly from 3.7.x.x to 4.1.x.x and what exact patch level did
you upgrade to?

Also, I know this has been questioned before, but I'm a little confused
about the problems people were having with the licenses. Unfortunately for
me, I was not present when our TSM server was set up and I did not see the
licenses being set up.

Sorry for being such a novice.

I saved off all config files, the accounting log and a bunch of other
things. I backed up the db and was ready for the worst. I needed nothing...
it was very straightforward. The licesnse files need to be installed
properly. I would highly recommend latest ATAPE driver and that is about
it. I didn't need any of the stuff I had saved off... no config changes at
all when upgrade was complete... only had to redo licensing.

I just did some 3.7.4 to 4.2.x for AIX.

It's pretty straightforward for the server code itself, but watch out for
changes in the startup scripts if you use an externally managed library.

I too have experienced the same problem and ended-up in rebuilding TSM

If your database is not big enough and if u have no time contraint, then do

Re: TSM Crashing

2001-12-26 Thread Pothula S Paparao

looks like the problem i had with recovery log full.
support said to upgrade 4.1.4 ? may be a good idea. 4.1.4 includes fix for
expiration errors. if u have a clean look at actlog and its errors , you
may get an idea why is it happening. these are the following events may
cause server to crash frequently (as i have experienced and had no choice
other than rebuilt TSM server from scratch upon adivse of L1,US)

1. expiration is not happening , errors in expiration (OBJECT not found in
TSM database table) - this is due to index corruption. to overcome this
problem , apply 4.1.4 and do 'audit db'.

2. recovery log full due to client backup pinning the log tail. try
overcome this by splitting client sessions (if it is db2 like databases, not
much idea on other dbs)
try avoiding server processes like expiration, migration, reclamatoin,db
backup etc while client sessions are running (run these operations
mannually).
If you are backingup data to disk and then to tape pool for large sized
objects, try backing up directly to tape pool. OR write a script which may
page you when recovery logs goes beyond 70-80 percent.

3. In process of extending recovery log and starting server process ,
server seems to be hanging for a long period while recovery log undo
process. keep patience and let it come up. dont kill this process. this may
cause tsm db corruption and you may force to do restoration of latest
available db.

hope this helps you.
thanks and regards
sreekumar.

Subject: TSM Crashing

Is there a known bug in TSM 4.1.0 (AIX) We have been running since
February, but all of a sudden the last few
days my TSM server keeps crashing. It has crashed the last three days
and five of the last seven. It has come at
different times of the day and I can't seem to find a common link.
The
TSM log just stops and the AIX error log says
a core dump software abnormal termination. I figure if I call
support,
the first thing they will tell me is what I want to do,
upgrade to the latest 4.1 ( I believe 4.1.4). However I have very
little AIX knowledge and have to wait for our AIX people.
If I can tell them that there are known bugs and that this should fix
the problem, it may light a fire under them. Any
ammo or help would be appreciated.

Re: Recover log at 5120MB and full - Cannot start TSM

2001-12-18 Thread Pothula S Paparao

Hi,
here is some stuff.
i had a big problem couple of months ago. TSM server crashes at every
alternate day. this is due to db2 backup pinning the log tail. To overcome
this,I have changed my policy definitions to backup the database (db2)
directly to tape pool instead of migrating database objects from disk_pool
to tape_pool. Observed that the log is not filling beyond 12%. Log size
assigned is 4.9GB. backingup TSM DB (full ) twice a day. running expiration
and reclamation mannullay using crontab (to see that expiration or
reclamation may not pin log during backup). I also have written a small
script which gives me a page alert whenever log reaches to 60% and above.

Andy,

This is not actually the oldest session, but the oldest uncommitted
transaction. See page 29 of the document this link goes to for a better
explanation. This is the same as happens to a SQL database, or others.

The other thing that has bitten us, is not the number of sessions,
but
the oldest session. We have had backup sessions running 10 hours
or
more, pinning log data. This pinned log data does not allow the
log
to
shrink, even if you perform a database backup.

Re: ADSM server crash

2001-12-05 Thread Pothula S Paparao

check your daily jobs for tsm are happening properly or not , say like
inventory expiration (should not terminate due to window timing) , see
activity log retention, also see q occupancy for which files are increaisng
may cause db to increase in size. see the volume history info also which is
kept in database.
u can delete using delete volhistory (should match ur requirements). also
see the q occupancy ouput for suspecious client backing up many objects
causing database growth. you can determine this by size. see the exclude
/include options happening properly to aviod unneccessary files to be
backeup.

crash normally happens when log size is overcommitted. send ur dsmserv.err
file for more info.

Ok; I'm running ADSM 3.7.2.0 on AIX 2.4; the server died with a core
dump, and we can't get it restarted - it crashed out each time.

several of the drives that the database volumes live on have hit 100%;
we suspect this as the problem, but we can't allocate more space to the
database since the server won't start... anyone know why it would crash
just because the dbvols filled or the disks filled up? I understand
that processes would die, but not the server itself...
I'll be happy to answer any further questions you all may have to
help
clear this up.

Does anyone know of any reporting tools that works well with TSM. I know
Tivoli has a Decision Support module for TSM but the price is pretty high.
We don't have the entire Tivoli Framework enviornment implemented so I
don't
think it would be best used here. We just use TSM and I'm looking for a
tool that can forecast future needs has well has show some good reports.

Yes this has bitten us on a few occasions and requires the usual temporary
log extension, re-start, database backup, log reduction, etc.

TSM Client for Tru64 Unix v4.1.2.0

The client dsmerror.log of a "failed" client contains these errors:
ERROR: **llStrP == NULL in InsertSlashHack!

The 1st occurred 2 nights in a row; however the User Abort

I searched ADSM.ORG for InsertSlashHack, but found nothing.
Anyone else ever seen this error or know what it is?

Re: internal server error / ANR0102E

2001-10-25 Thread Pothula S Paparao

Did u find any volumes causing this problem. observe which are the volumes
mounted during migration and also perform audit volume on that.
not really know, which is causing problem after going through ur message.
I can only suspect that this was the result of a failed transaction. The
error that you were seeing indicated that attempting to write some data
to a Storeage pool. The TSM Server keeps track of all of the data on this
storage pool and therefore knows where to append data on a given pool.
The problem was that there was already a database entry for the segment
that u are attempting to write to. As a result we could not append any
data to that storage pool volume. Moving the data from this volume will
cause all of the segment information for this storage pool volume to be
removed from the database, thus eliminating the problem. Problem may occur
is when a transaction begins writing to a storage pool volume. A segment
on the stg. vol will be allocated to this transaction. If this transaction
fails, TSM server will roll back any database updates created by this
transction. In few cases, in your case , TSM server was unable to do this.
There may stil exists some invalid entries in database resulting
transaction to fail.
Try audit volumes on stg pool volumes also.

sreekumar.

recovery log is filling up so quickly

2001-10-18 Thread Pothula S Paparao

Hi floks,
Strange problem. Recovery log fills up rapidly and causes server to crash.
This only seems to occur when DB2 backup happening.
I tried backing up Db2 database parellel with 4 session 8 buffers, but of
no use. I also tried increasing the log , didnt click.
any suggestions.

Re: Backupsets

2001-10-05 Thread Pothula S Paparao

Hi floks,
Why i wanted to know more about backupset ?

Our setup : AIX4.3.3 , TSM 4.1.4.2 , 3575 Auto library.
Recently i had a problem with Expire inventory . contacted IBM support (one
to many). They suggested to apply fix 4.1.4.2, I have done it. Still
expiration problem persists. One fine day my TSM server crashed. I tried to
up the server and It never listen to me. Finally , i had to restore most
recent backup. But, TSM keep crashing every day at mid night. I asked IBM
support to escalate this problem (expiration and corrupted DB pages) to
L2/L3, It took weeks time. They suggested me to AUDIT DB with fix=yes.
nope. they again come up with UNLOADDB/LOADFORMAT/LOADDB...after few
days... They asked me to EXPORT/IMPORT all nodes . Even this didnot
worked out. After all this, they said its a known bug and asked us to find
good copy of DB (which we dont have) or rebuild TSM from scratch.
Yes, we have dicided to rebuild from scratch. (no other option)

so *SMers, I would like to know more about backupset. i know little about
it. can i create a backupset for each node and check out those tapes
outside. rebuild TSM from scratch with leftover tapes. Later, check in
those tapes having backup sets and make use of them with newly built TSM
server. This way i may not loose much data except API related DB2 backups.
Guys As im not clear on this option , i request you to give me more
detailed information about this.

Your reply in this regard is highly appriciated.
Thanks in advance.
Regards
Sreekumar.

Are u using Shared - library or mannual ?
however, if u try creating sequetial device class 'FILE' in disk and try to
unload db using the said device class , you may find the unloaddb may not
distrub you any more.
try doing this.
---
1)define a device class - FILE type
2) dsmserv unloaddb devclass=
3) dsmserv loadformat 1 logfile 1 dbfile
4) dsmserv loaddb devclass=?

make sure that you have volhistory file backedup before doing this.
Hope this helps

Did the UNLOADDB process really succeed even though we got ANRD

end of the process we didn't get any information about the DBDUMP volume.
We had before the process a database size of 830,593 database pages and

We didn't continue with dsmserv loadformat just return to the original

Does anybody have an experience with this problem.

Re: Error in expire inventory

2001-10-01 Thread Pothula S Paparao

Extreme with ADSM!! by the way what is the version TSM u are using.

   Perform UNLOADDB   => .DMP
Perform LOADFORMAT all log volumes and dbvolumes (see the syntax in
tsmadmin guide)
   Perform LOADDB from .DMP
Perform AUDITDB after completion of LOADDB process.
   Then start TSM server.

This will solve your problem. If not, u need to send ur DMP file to IBM
lab or restore good old copy.
   This is my experience.

OK folks, this one has bothered me for years. I want to disable the TSM
server
completely while I do some work. Rather than using the "disable sessions"

command, I want to in effect disable TCPIP connections altogether. I have
attempted commenting out "COMMmethod TCPIP" in the dsmserv.opt file, but it

appears that this is the default, so it has no affect.

Besides the obvious answer of disconnecting the network cable, how can I
force
the TSM server to ignore every TCPIP request. When sessions are disabled,
the
activity log shows connection started, than a message indicating that user
access is disabled. I want to avoid this.

Thanks in advance.

Kind People,

I've backed up a file (dsmc sel) but cannot see it (dsmc q ba).

I'm in directory /var/adm/perfmgr/daily/gfbdw.
My file is the shrewdly named ericfile.
I back the file up with "dsmc sel ericfile" from the AIX command line.
The file backs up successfully.
I enter "dsmc q ba /var/adm/perfmgr/daily/gfbdw/ericfile" and get the
following result.
ANS1092E No files matching search criteria were found.

This directory is in the /var filesystem. Interestingly, I've had no
problem backing up and viewing a similarly named file from every directory
above in the tree ie /var, /var/adm, /var/adm/perfmgr and
/var/adm/perfmgr/daily. The problem only occurs in the final directory.
None of the directories are links or mounts.

I can list other files which have been backed up from this directory, but
none which have been backed up for the last month.

Platform: AIX 4.3
TSM Server: 4.1.4.1
TSM AIX Client: 4.1.3.0

Your assistance in understanding what's going on is much appreciated.

If its a single drive only get a cleaning tape and insert it into the drive
! If its within a library the checkin the cleaning cartitidges ( one or
more ) via the menu on the operating panel. Within this menu you have also
the possibility to clean the drive(s) immediate or set the cleaning
frequency ( as needed ). You can leave this cleaning tapes in the library ,
cause TSM will not touch these tapes ( also if there runs an audit libr),
cause they are stored in seperate slots - only used by the library
microcode itself )

When you run the dsm session. There is an option to change you
login/connection from the menu bar ( FILE / LOGON ). On the server you
want
to restore to login to dsm as the server you want to restore from. From
there on it is the same as usual.

Re: Restore on a different client machine?

hi yahya
try out this option from aix prompt of any node where u wanna restore this
directory or files.

dsmc restore -virtualnodname=nodename

See that you have owenship permissions for accessing the above node or else
u can use 'admin' id to restore.

I don't think that information is actually available. If you take a look
at
the CONTENTS table, it'll tell you what files live on a volume. However,
it
doesn't give you a way to map the file to the correct _version_ of the file
you wish to restore. Can anyone look and see if they might have added the
OBJECT_ID to the CONTENTS table in 4.1? I'm not quite there yet.

What I don't understand is why it takes so darn long for the query to run,
when TSM can find the tape it needs very quickly when you run the actual
restore command. What is really needed is "preview" option like on the
restore volume command. Just my opinion.

Hello,

When I first read this I thought it would simply be easier for TSM to
take
care of the restore. However, IF, you have a screaming fast server where
TSM
runs the massive searches, the script could be pretty handy used in the
right places.

If anyone has one out there I would like to see it also.
