Re: firmware robot magstar3575L32

2003-03-14 Thread Rafael Mendez
Hi there,
Eric, I have been talking to my HW colleagues and they have told me that, microcode is
updated allways as Richard mentioned.
Also, I do not even see a microchip replacement in order to update microcode.

So, I think that, the best way is to call directly to IBM HW representative.

 Hi Richard!

Bare in mind that Michelle wants here library microcode upgraded, not the

drive microcode, which indeed can be done from the host or directly from a

 CE tape.

Also, one cannot really call a 3575 a modern library, can you? ;-)

You will not find it anywhere. The library microcode is on a chip on the

control board inside your library. The only way to have your library

microcode upgraded is by placing a service call at IBM. They will come and

place a new chip in your library. I have had it done here, it takes about

 30

 minutes.

My gullibility meter just went off the scale...

I don't know of any modern library or like device where a CE arrives and

replaces a chip to upgrade microcode. When they do it, its via an FMR

 (Field

Microcode Replacement) tape, as the 3575 manuals describe. But that's the

hand-carry method: microcode can also be installed from a host file, as

 through

OS commands, or utilities like the 'tapeutil' command...in its Tape Drive

 Service

Aids section, Microcode Load (Download microcode from a host file or

 diskette to

tape device via SCSI bus). It's not always something that the customer

customarily does, but can certainly be done. In any case, your CE should be

showing up whenever your library is ripe for a microcode update, to

 volunteer

to do the deed for you: you should not have to explore for the way to do

 this.

Call IBM Service and talk to them about this.

 Hi *SM fellows,

I'm running TSM 4.2.3.1 on an AIX 4.3.3 system (IBM 6h0) with 2 GB ram, the db size
is 21 GB, 75 % used, the logpool size is 12 GB. Since 3 weeks (when we upgraded from
4.2.1.15), I get massive performance degradation : expire inventory takes ages
(approx 20 hours) to go through 9 million objects, and cache hit ratio is between 94
and 96 %. I tried to increase my bufpoolsize from 151 MB to 400 in several 100 GB
steps without seeing any improvement, and the system is now heavily paging.

Could you please share your bufpoolsize settings with me, if working in the same
kind of environment, or give me some advice for tuning the server ?

 Thanks in advance !

Re: Oracle and TDP issues

2002-10-22 Thread Rafael Mendez
Hi Zoltan,
I am not Oracle expert too but I think I can give you some clue.
Like you should know, in Oracle 8i RMAN appeared replacing to EBU (Enterprise Backup
Utility). So, In your case, you have to install EBU (if my mind still works, I think
the last EBU version was 2.2) which is included with Oracle 7.x.
Actually, TDP for Oracle does not support Oracle 7.x versions and, as far as I know,
EBU is also out of support from Oracle side.

Anyway, I suggest you to register into Oracle site and search for EBU support.

So, the owner of this box/package contacts the vendor. Their response

wasOracle is version 7.3.4, not 8i or 9i, which will not run with their

So, how does one backup an Oracle app/database, using the TDP without RMAN

Re: TSM: DB Best Practises ?

2002-10-03 Thread Rafael Mendez

Hi Riaan,
I would like to share with you my experience here. I have seen how people
administering TSM server forget how important is to have planned the AUDITDB.
Just one week ago, one of our customers HAD TO execute an audit db after 3 years of
not to do it. That causes the TSM server had to be stopped for more than 50
hours!!. (50 hours without backup or any possibility to restore).
So, with this expample, my personal opinion is, TSM server administrator should plan
one (at least) or two audit db a year.
Of course, I am concius about to stop TSM server is not an easy issue but lots of
problems could be avoided running the AUDIT DB.
It would be interesting that someone outhere gives us a point of view on this issue.

Hope this helps you in the long way to learn TSM.

If possible any integrity or consistency check that we can run to verify

the DB ? TSM internal commands ? or external utilities ?

Second Question: (I know I am pushing it - but seeing as I already have the

guru's attention) - Does TSM have a utility that scans in a tape and

re-populates the DB ? Example: We have a tape and we arent sure what data it

contains - can one scan (for lack of a better term) the contents ? Can one

restore from that tape (say to a temp location) to view the contents ?

 Any help is appreciated.

Re: Cross platform restores?

2002-09-03 Thread Rafael Mendez

Hi Steve,
Although there are some tricks to do that, I do not think that practice is acceptable.
Why?, because data is money and, restoring data wherever you want means, in my
opinion, data traveling without control of its owner. (Do not think you are the
good one, think on people attacking your data, your network... so on.)
At tech level, that practice could cause problems in TSM server and TSM clients and
finally remember that NT file system(NTFS) are not the same type of Unix file systems.

Just my point of view.

 Hi All,

 Quick question:

Is it possible to do a cross platform restore? If so, how?

I have some users who wish to restore a backup image of an NT4 server onto a

unix(AIX) server for purposes of DR (not my place to ask why). In my mind

this could be possible as it is effectively only a binary file. I have been

trying the q backup command with the fromnode option on the AIX server but

it can't seem to see any files from the NT node. The access is set on the NT

server to allow all users from all nodes access to the filespaces so I don't

 think this is a problem.

Re: Regarding Audit of Database

2002-08-26 Thread Rafael Mendez

Hi Farren,
I have not seen unified criteria about the time spent for AUDITDB and it's normal
because, everybody has different machines, different TSM server version, different DB
sizde and log size and so on.
Anyway, i would like to give you some examples about the time spent for some of our
clients.
- 10 hours: 8 Gb DB and 2 Gb LOG. Using TSM server 4.2.2.6 on windows NT 4.0 on A
Netfinity pentium III with 2 Gb RAM.
- 3 hours: 5Gb DB and 1 Gb LOG. Using TSM server 4.2.1.7 on Solaris 7.
- 4 hours: 4Gb DB and 2 Gb LOG. Using TSM server 4.2.1.9 on AIX. Server is an H80 with
two proccessors ans 2 Gb RAM.

Like you can see, in my opinion, its impossible to know the exact time for an auditdb.

Hoping someone might have an answer/guidance for me. We are evaluating

Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) v5.1.1. It seems that the LTO drive/autoloader

we have though is not recognized by WIN2K/TSM. Presently we use the tape

drive on a Netware 5.1/Backup Exec combo. The IBM LTO drive/autoloader is a

model 3600-109. Tivoli's site says that TSM supports the 3600-109. But I

can't get Windows 2000 to load a correct driver for it. IBM doesn't support

WIN2K drivers for the 3600-109 like it does for the 3580,3581,3583,3584 LTO

units. I installed all the updated device drivers for TSM and still a no go

with it. Does anyone here have any experience with the 3600-109? Any help

 would be appreciated.

 Thanks,

 Paul

Re: Collocation and mount points

Hi David,
Have you checked errpt?. Do you have more than one drive?. Drives are online?

If you have more then one drive available, you should checked the value of the
parameter Mount Limit in the device class. Normally this value should equal
DRIVES.

Hope this helps.

I turned on collocation last week and now I am getting this message:

ANR1082W Space reclamation terminated for volume 4A0023 - insufficient

number of mount points available for removable media.

I looked up the error message and it tells me:User Response: If necessary,

 make more mount points available

Is this the same as mount limit for the server? I see that you can specify

number of mount points for a node. But how can you specify this for a tape?

 Hi all,

I remember a document (Red-Book) where was written how to restore the

Operating-System and all data to a WIN-NT-Server (By starting with an extra

partition with TSM-Client and restoring the other partition ...).

I can not find this document anymore on any Web-page from IBM. Does anybody

 have a link ?

But my real problem is to recover a W2K-Server. My collegues are testing

recovery on W2K-Servers and up to now thei didn't manage to get one running

as before (problems that are reported by them are e.g. with the

InternetExplorer 6). Does anybody have a tested plan on how to recover a

W2K-Server with TSM (not realy bar-metal but e.g. with an extra partition

...) or is there anywhere a document on how to do it ?

 Thanks for help

Re: 2 Questions

2002-08-13 Thread Rafael Mendez

Hi Steve,
I have found that the error ANR0871E is solved installing a different patch level(4.1.
but, like you should know, version 4.1 is out of support.
For that reason, I suggest you to upgrade TSM server at least to 4.2.2.0.
The error with tapes, I have seen some similar cases and allways using an audit volume
 fix=no helps to solve it.

Hope this helps.

I will contact TSM support to see what they recommend for the auditdb

   Steve,

first, it would be nice if you give your TSM server platform and version.

I have 2 different problems that maybe someone can help with.

Firstly when doing expiration I receive the following error message

ANR0871E Cannot find file space name for node 86, file space 1073741823.

This problem we had also a year ago, it was fixed in 4.1.1 (AIX).

Secondly, I have a tape volume that will not be reclaimed. When I do a q

 vol

command on it, it says that the pct utilised is 0.0. When I try and q the

contents of the tape it says that there is nothing on the tape. However I

can not reclaim it, delete it or move data (it says there is no data to

move). When I start reclamation the activity log says that it will be

reclaimed but then nothing ever happens with it.

Workaround is 'audit vol fixNs', this problem is solved in 4.2.1.13

 (AIX).

   Cheers,

   Henk ten Have.

Re: Compare TSM/Legato and Veritas

2002-08-02 Thread Rafael Mendez

Hi,
In my opinion (I have used Legato and TSM not Veritas) each storage product has its
advantages and disadvantages.
Legato is easy to install and configure but when you have very new devices, Legato is
not the best. Also, i do not trust in Legato support.

TSM is in my opinion the most powerful storage software but is hard to understand how
it works. You need to study very much and sometimes TSM require too much effort.

Legato could be installed over a small network(for that reason you have three
different versions of Legato Server) but I do not think is a good idea to install TSM
if you have small network.

Legato on Solaris is very good like TSM on AIX( I am not telling Legato and TSM
installed over other OS work badly).
Installing Legato maybe you do not need to have a Legato Admin but I am sure that TSM
needs allways an administrator.

So, this is just my point of view and I am concious that many people could disagree
with me.

TDP for Domino URGENT!!!!!!!!

Hi all,

The problem is, when I execute selective backups, all is working fine but, when I try
with incremental backups, the tdp only inspect the databases but the backup does not
occurs.
Here you have the output:

TDP for Domino not working

2002-06-05 Thread Rafael Mendez

Hi all,

I need some help with TDP for Domino on NT.
Aparently all is working well but, when we execute
   domdsmc incremental * .
the last message we can see is the following:

Querying Domino for a list of databases, please wait...
We wait for hours but the backup never occurs.

Does any one have seen this before? Any idea?
The environment is:
TDP 1.1.2 for Domino on windows NT 4.0
TSM server 5.1 on AIX

For your information, if we execute domdsmc incremental a*.nsf
the backup occurs backing up only databases starting with the letter A (of course, if
we replace the letter, the backup works but only with those databases begining with
that letter).

Thanks in advance for your help.

. and so on.
This problem causes scheduler fall down and of course the backup does not occur. Also
it generates a core.
The TSM client and the TSM server are installed on the same machine but the server
works fine.
The operating system is AIX 4.3.3 and TSM server is 4.2.1.7.

Any ideas?.
Thanks in advance
Rafael

Version 4.2.1.7

2001-11-15 Thread Rafael Mendez

Hi all,
Does anyone have installed the 4.2.1.7 patch for TSM server?
We are planning to install this patch but we want to know if the problems on 4.2.1.6
version are fixed.
Any comments?
TIA
