Re: firmware robot magstar3575L32

2003-03-14 Thread Rafael Mendez
Hi there,
Eric, I have been talking to my HW colleagues and they have told me that, microcode is
updated allways as Richard mentioned.
Also, I do not even see a microchip replacement in order to update microcode.

So, I think that, the best way is to call directly to IBM HW representative.

BRMS and TSM reports different amount of data

2003-01-24 Thread Rafael Mendez
Hi TMS'ers,
I hope someone outhere could help us with this problem.
Our customer has TSM server 4.1.5 on windows NT.
AS/400 client backing up via BRMS.

The problem is, BRMS reports an amount of data backed up (for example 2 Gb) and TSM
resports an amount "completelty different" (for example 12 Gb for the same backed up
data). The problem does not appears allways, it is ramdom problem.

Does anybody has experienced this before?.
Any idea would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi,
Take a look of TSM Device support in IBM support site (you have to be registered to
have full access).
I think you are not using the element numbers defined for your type of library.
I have found the following in IBM support site for ADIC 1000 library.
Tape drive 1 (element 800) __
Tape drive 2 (element 801) __
Tape drive 3 (element 802) __

Come on people Do not use the list if you have problems with your browser. :-(
I do not have problems reaching the manuals and if you have problems, TRY using
another browser.
If you have real problems, open a COMPLAINT with IBM people.
Sorry for sending this message to all the list but I do not want to get more messages

Re: Oracle and TDP issues

2002-10-22 Thread Rafael Mendez
Hi Zoltan,
I am not Oracle expert too but I think I can give you some clue.
Like you should know, in Oracle 8i RMAN appeared replacing to EBU (Enterprise Backup
Utility). So, In your case, you have to install EBU (if my mind still works, I think
the last EBU version was 2.2) which is included with Oracle 7.x.
Actually, TDP for Oracle does not support Oracle 7.x versions and, as far as I know,
EBU is also out of support from Oracle side.

Anyway, I suggest you to register into Oracle site and search for EBU support.

Re: TSM: DB Best Practises ?

2002-10-03 Thread Rafael Mendez

Hi Riaan,
I would like to share with you my experience here. I have seen how people
administering TSM server forget how important is to have planned the AUDITDB.
Just one week ago, one of our customers HAD TO execute an audit db after 3 years of
not to do it. That causes the TSM server had to be stopped for more than 50
hours!!. (50 hours without backup or any possibility to restore).
So, with this expample, my personal opinion is, TSM server administrator should plan
one (at least) or two "audit db" a year.
Of course, I am concius about to stop TSM server is not an easy issue but lots of
problems could be avoided running the AUDIT DB.
It would be interesting that someone outhere gives us a point of view on this issue.

Hope this helps you in the long way to learn TSM.

Re: Cross platform restores?

2002-09-03 Thread Rafael Mendez

Hi Steve,
Although there are some tricks to do that, I do not think that practice is acceptable.
Why?, because "data is money" and, restoring data wherever you want means, in my
opinion, data "traveling" without control of its owner. (Do not think you are the
"good one", think on people attacking your data, your network... so on.)
At tech level, that practice could cause problems in TSM server and TSM clients and
finally remember that NT file system(NTFS) are not the same type of Unix file systems.

Just my point of view.

Re: Regarding Audit of Database

2002-08-26 Thread Rafael Mendez

Hi Farren,
I have not seen unified criteria about the time spent for AUDITDB and it's normal
because, everybody has different machines, different TSM server version, different DB
sizde and log size and so on.
Anyway, i would like to give you some examples about the time spent for some of our
clients.
- 10 hours: 8 Gb DB and 2 Gb LOG. Using TSM server 4.2.2.6 on windows NT 4.0 on A
Netfinity pentium III with 2 Gb RAM.
- 3 hours: 5Gb DB and 1 Gb LOG. Using TSM server 4.2.1.7 on Solaris 7.
- 4 hours: 4Gb DB and 2 Gb LOG. Using TSM server 4.2.1.9 on AIX. Server is an H80 with
two proccessors ans 2 Gb RAM.

Like you can see, in my opinion, its impossible to know the exact time for an auditdb.

Re: Collocation and mount points

2002-08-14 Thread Rafael Mendez

Hi David,
Have you checked errpt?. Do you have more than one drive?. Drives are online?

If you have more then one drive available, you should checked the value of the
parameter "Mount Limit" in the device class. Normally this value should equal
"DRIVES".

Hope this helps.

Re: 2 Questions

2002-08-13 Thread Rafael Mendez

Hi Steve,
I have found that the error ANR0871E is solved installing a different patch level(4.1.
but, like you should know, version 4.1 is out of support.
For that reason, I suggest you to upgrade TSM server at least to 4.2.2.0.
The error with tapes, I have seen some similar cases and allways using an audit volume
 fix=no helps to solve it.

Hope this helps.

Hi,
This is a MS problem.
You could check the MS docs Q192657 and Q240145.
To give you a clue, maybe Ms people should delete all log files and re-ran

Re: Compare TSM/Legato and Veritas

2002-08-02 Thread Rafael Mendez

Hi,
In my opinion (I have used Legato and TSM not Veritas) each storage product has its
advantages and disadvantages.
Legato is easy to install and configure but when you have very new devices, Legato is
not the best. Also, i do not trust in Legato support.

TSM is in my opinion the most powerful storage software but is hard to understand how
it works. You need to study very much and sometimes TSM require too much effort.

Legato could be installed over a small network(for that reason you have three
different versions of Legato Server) but I do not think is a good idea to install TSM
if you have small network.

Legato on Solaris is very good like TSM on AIX( I am not telling Legato and TSM
installed over other OS work badly).
Installing Legato maybe you do not need to have a Legato Admin but I am sure that TSM
needs allways an administrator.

So, this is just my point of view and I am concious that many people could disagree
with me.

Rafael

Hi Carlos,
Firstly, I think is not recomendable that you mantain your actual TSM server version
because, like you should know, 4.1 version is out of support.
Answering to your question, you have a complete procedure of how to add an automatic
library in any "Quick start"

Hope this help.

Hi Carlos,
I suggest you to increase the size of the DB too increase the Maximum Reduction to be

Also, you have the option of reorganize your DB (using UNLOADDB/LOADDB ) but in my

Of course, we are sure that databases have changed.
The following is the test of selective backup of one database but, trust me, if we
execute selective backup of all databases ( 6000 DB) all is working well.

TDP for Domino not working

2002-06-05 Thread Rafael Mendez

Hi all,

I need some help with TDP for Domino on NT.
Aparently all is working well but, when we execute
   domdsmc incremental * .
the last message we can see is the following:

Querying Domino for a list of databases, please wait...
We wait for hours but the backup never occurs.

Does any one have seen this before? Any idea?
The environment is:
TDP 1.1.2 for Domino on windows NT 4.0
TSM server 5.1 on AIX

For your information, if we execute domdsmc incremental a*.nsf
the backup occurs backing up only databases starting with the letter A (of course, if
we replace the letter, the backup works but only with those databases begining with
that letter).

Thanks in advance for your help.

Rafael

Problems with client

2001-11-26 Thread Rafael Mendez

Hi All there,
We are having a problem with a TSM client 4.2.1.
The error in dsmsrror.log is the following:
11/26/01 00:02:48 Attempt to free unknown pointer. Addr 30028740, File procopt
s.cpp, Line 12282
11/26/01 00:02:48 Attempt to free unknown pointer. Addr 61, File procopts.cpp,

11/26/01 00:02:49 0x10044598 *UNKNOWN*
. and so on.
This problem causes scheduler fall down and of course the backup does not occur. Also
it generates a core.
The TSM client and the TSM server are installed on the same machine but the server
works fine.
The operating system is AIX 4.3.3 and TSM server is 4.2.1.7.

Any ideas?.
Thanks in advance
Rafael

Hi all,
Does anyone have installed the 4.2.1.7 patch for TSM server?
We are planning to install this patch but we want to know if the problems on 4.2.1.6

Any comments?
