The : is the drive delimiter.
The *: means any drive.
But, nohup.out is probably a file on a UNIX based computer and drive
letters don't really make sense.
Hope this helps,

Best you can do is ask your firewall guy if he can check the firewall logs to
see if the firewall somehow drops the packets. Also, you can check the

That link refers to Backup/Archive client.

I just sniffed both IE6 and ITSM-OR(5.2.2.0) Web-GUI login and both show the username
and password!

I haven't checked the TSM Client, but now I don't believe that it sends the
username/password. Generally, what Andy says it right!
I'm ready to say that I was wrong for the Client, has anyone sniffed a client and
would like to share that information?

The Web-GUI does send the username and password in clear text. (Can this be changed?)

Re: Firewall backups

2004-04-21 Thread Sal Mangiapane
We operate through firewalls differently:

We have a small VPN device that we use to create an IPSec VPN tunnel and only have
entries in the firewall for this tunnel, then we
run all ITSM traffic through the tunnel. Makes for simpler firewall settings and adds
extra security because username/password is
sent as plain text by ITSM.

You will also want to limit the Web-GUI client for security reasons too (plain text --
too).

I can provide more details, contact me directly:

We have been running on RedHat with our own hardware without a problem (over a year).

It seems that TSM is very particular to the kernel. We are using a kernel that is
specifically supported (2.4.9-31).

I wish I knew where the list of supported kernels is because that would probably help
you.

WAN link dropped in the middle of a TDP Exchange full backup

2003-12-09 Thread Sal Mangiapane
Hi *SMers

We had a Full TDP for Exchange backup that was running since Thursday (slow WAN link)
fail with less than 1GB to go. The ISP had a
problem and we lost the WAN connection to the server.

Can we re-start the full backup where it left off (at 20 plus GB)?

I'm afraid since this is a full backup that we'll need to start from the beginning
again.

thanks,

sal

I think you mean:

include g:\inetpub\...\*

You need the ...\ to include sub-directories otherwise it would only backup the
current directory. Besides that I think this would
work too.

Re: restoring UNIX client data

2003-10-23 Thread Sal Mangiapane
I think you need:

/Prod_App/example/test/.../*

That would traverse the entire directory structure, I suppose you are getting every
file in the "test" directory.

Re: Unidata DB on IBM RISC 6000

2003-09-30 Thread Sal Mangiapane
I have worked with Universe (Unidata's cousin) for years. They have standard database
backup commands. Wish I knew more about
Unidata to help you.

TSM does not have a specific agent for these databases.

Maybe IBM should build one, since they now own Universe and Unidata. This is
definitely and untapped market for backup solutions.

Re: Archive schedule error: No file specification entered

2003-08-15 Thread Sal Mangiapane
Correct me if I'm wrong, please.

On Microsoft OS;

If you schedule an automatic Archive. The Archive will archive every file every time
that it runs.

I think that archiving would be more functional if it acted similar to the backup
client. The backup client is a set it and forget
it every client can use the same server schedule. Each client will determine what is
included in the backup.

With the archive scheduling, each server schedule is specific to the client.
Logically, it seems to defeat the client server
architecture.

IMHO, the backup client features that would benefit the archive client:
 1) use the dsm.opt file for determining what will be included in the archive.
 2) Archive only items that have not been archived. For example, new or changed
items. Ignore items that have been archived and
not changed. Of course, I would expect the archive of a changed item would completely
replace the old archive of that item,
otherwise it would be an incremental backup.

If I'm wrong about how archive works I would appreciate some feedback.

Yes, I know that the archive can delete the file so it is not archived again, but that
defeats the purpose if just want the file to
also be archived off-site. And, yes I can use backup and a different management class
to accomplish what I'm looking for. But,
why?

ITSM is a terrific product and I may be the only person that thinks archive should
work differently.

I'm off my soapbox,

Has anyone used the include.encrypt option on production system?

Have you seen CPU processing significantly change on the client or server?

Does it require more LAN/WAN bandwidth to backup / restore?

Is it available for all supported platforms?

That is very interesting. In the US government has some "acts" that are concerned
with privacy. There is HIPAA for health care
industry patient data protection and GLBA for the financial industry consumer data
protection.

Is anyone using TSM to protect data that is affected by either HIPAA or GLBA? If so,
have you taken any specific measures to comply
with the requirements.

We are running TSM Server (5.1.5.0) on Linux (Red Hat kernel 2.4.9-31) and intel

Works great.

IBM does not support DRM on Linux.

IBM in their documentation is very specific about kernel.
Check about half way down this web page and there are specific Linux requirements and

Re: WINNT 4.0 SP5 PDC wasn't backing up the software hive in the registry

2003-01-16 Thread Sal Mangiapane
Sounds like it may have been a hardware (disk) drive failure where the registry is
found.

Maybe the registry hive was not available. This would also explain why it wouldn't
reboot.

Does the PDC even get to the 'last good menu' option? If so, try it.

Can you restore from the 1/10 backups?

Other things to consider:

Are the disk drives mirrored? If yes, maybe you could try booting from the other
drive by updating boot.ini

Do you have a BDC? Promote it to PDC and recreate this server from scratch as a BDC
and restore from TSM.

Thanks and God bless,

[no subject]

2003-01-13 Thread Sal Mangiapane
Hi and thanks in advance,

TSM server 5.1.5.0 Linux. TSM client 5.1.5.0 NT 4.0

1) Can I use include/exclude to specify files to archive? The documentation says I
can but it doesn't seem to work. Support says
I have to set it from the server, is this true?

2) Will the archive client archive everything in a directory every time or only what
is not already archived?

Thanks and God bless,

sal

Re: faulty media

2003-01-09 Thread Sal Mangiapane
Have you considered where you store the tapes?

Anything magnetic near the tapes will cause tape problems. This could be UPS or
monitor or even disk sub systems can all cause
problems if tapes remain close for some time.

how can I tell if a specific APAR is installed?

2003-01-07 Thread Sal Mangiapane
Hi,

I need to know if IC33840 is in my Linux 5.1.5 TSM server. If not, will 5.1.5.6 have
this fix?

Also, where can I find this information for future APARs.

Thanks and God bless,

sal
