bad performance when restoring single files from a backupset

2003-12-12 Thread Sascha Braeuning
Hello,

I performed a backupset from one of our servers (Windows NT). The backupset
was generated on a HP Ultrium LTO drive, which is conected to the TSM
Server (also Windows NT TSM Version 4.2.2.0) via SCSI. The generation
process of the backupset ran 2,5 hours. Now I tried to read the contents of
the backupset (q backupsetcontents). The read process takes more than one
day!! When I think of restoring a single file from this backupset, I get
crazy!

Can anybody help me or has an explanation of such a difference between
backing up and restoring?

ANR9999D TSM Server 4.2.2.2 and Client 5.1.5.15

2003-11-28 Thread Sascha Braeuning
Hello TSMers,

I've got a problem with an updated client. We updated the Windows NT client
from version 3.1 to version 5.1.5.15. Our TSM server is running under Z/OS
and TSM Version 4.2.2.2. I tested backup and restore behavior and
everything looks fine. The services started without a problem and the
client got his backuptime from the server (we use prompted mode).

Now I am getting this terrible error message on the TSM server:

28.11.2003 13:46:00 ANRD SMEXEC(1627): ThreadId139004 Session 78272
with
client C010191B (WinNT) rejected - server does not
support the UNICODE mode that the client was
requesting.

When I check the clienterrorlogs, there seems to be everything alright. No
errors! Can anybody help?

Hello,

we use TSM Server 4.2.2.0 on Windows NT. We created a backupset on LTO

Installation of TSM Server 5.1.6.5

2003-09-10 Thread Sascha Braeuning
Hello TSMers,

I've got a big problem with the installation of a TSM Server 5.1.6.5 on
Windows NT Server 4.0 SP6. When I run the silent installation (described by
IBM in Quick Start) and I install the server, following Application want's
to have a restart:
Active Directory Services Interface 2.5

When I click no (no restart), installation goes on but: we want to build an
automatic package for installing TSM Server. Is there any way to suppress
the Messagebox of ADSI?

For Information: We use Microsofts Software Management System to distribute
our Software.

Other Question: Which component needs the ADSI? Is it the Microsoft
Management Console?

for my opinion, it seems to be a normal migration process caused by the
migrationthreshold which is defined in your diskpool. Automatic migration
is started by TSM, when the threshold HighMig is reached.

Re: archiving questions

2003-01-23 Thread Sascha Braeuning
Hello Michelle,

if you did the tasks, Andrew expected in the mail before, you can perform
an archive operation with the option archmc=your_archive_managementclass.

For example you can use the following command to archive files in your
diectory d:\archive:

archive archmc=archclass d:\archive\*

If you use the option -deletefiles, files archived will be deleted on the
client!

I think, it's very comfortable to use. Also see your document how to use
your Backup/Archive Client. There you can get more information about
special options.

Hi Michelle,

You will need a management class with an archive copy group that retains
the data for 3 years. Therefore you will need to:

1) Create a new management class in the desired domain/policy set. (See
DEFINE MGMTCLASS in the Administrator's Reference.)

2) Create an archive copygroup in the new management class with the
desired retention. (See DEFINE COPYGROUP in the Administrator's
Reference.)

3) Activate the policy set. (See ACTIVATE POLICYSET in the Administrator's
Reference.)

If you are not the TSM server administrator, then you will need to have
that person perform these tasks. Once the new management class is
available, you can run the archive and bind the files to that new
management class.

Hi all,

A client of mine requests that 220GB of databases are being archived on
tape and kept for 3 years.
I've been looking for a way on how to do this but the manuals only speak
of
how the archive client command works. Not really on how things work on the
serverside. I assume I'll have to make another managementclaas which
defines
how long to keep trhe files etc. but I'm not sure how to go about this.
below are the specifics on our current mg classes; the domain I'm speaking
of is the one called progress.

Does anyone have some ideas on how to do this?

Antwort: Excluding files in Windows NT

2002-10-30 Thread Sascha Braeuning
Hello,

you can exclude these files without any problems. TSM handles these files
(not ntuser.dat) as system objects and backs them up another way. Because
these files are allways opened by another process (OS), TSM is not able to
back them up in the normal way. If you do a backup of Partition C, than you
can see, that TSM makes a directory named adsm.sys. Within this directory
there are copies of the NT system objects (Registry and Log), which
allows TSM, to back these copies up.

Hope this helps,

Antwort: 3590 compression vs tsm compression

2002-10-28 Thread Sascha Braeuning
Hello Rob!

Your Options in the device class:
Set your Estimated Capacity under the maximum value of your tapes. TSM uses
this value only for calculating tha capacity of your storagepool and so on
...
Set your maximum capacity to 0. TSM writes until the tape is full! So TSM
can detect the maximum value itself!
Set compression to yes. Than TSM activates the IDRC compression of your
3590 drive. This should work then!

space reclamation when using server-to-server communication

Data transfer rates with TSM for OS/390
