I'm not sure this is the best answer to your question, but in the absence of
any other replies I thought it might at least prompt somebody to come up with
something better.

I'm assuming here that your hypervisor is vSphere and not Hyper-V? In which
case empirical evidence from my systems suggests that for every backup of a
snapshot of the VM called bodev, I get one bodev.ovf backup object.

I would normally shy away from running Selects against the Backups table, so
use the following at your own risk. However to determine how many snapshots
you've got stored for the VM called bodev, maybe try something like the
following?

SELECT COUNT(*) FROM BACKUPS WHERE FILESPACE_NAME='\VMFULL-bodev' AND LL_NAME
LIKE '%.ovf'

It looks like all versions of bodev.ovf will show as Active versions, but
perhaps you can just assume the number of inactive backups is 1 less than the
total?

Re: delete volume

2017-03-24 Thread Schofield, Neil (Storage & Middleware, Backup & Restore)

Eric

My experience of DELETE VOLUME going back to ADSM 3.1 is that it will
immediately make the library volume (physical or virtual) scratch with no
pending reuse delay.

By typing the words DISCARDDATA=YES, I guess you are explicitly consenting to
never being able to access the data again. You might have a way back if by
chance a physical tape hasn't been re-used by the time you realise your
mistake, but with virtual tape the data erasure is immediate when the volume is
relabelled.

I suppose my advice would be to only use DISCARDDATA=YES in the event that all
remaining data on the volume has already proven (through MOVE DATA operations,
or whatever) to be unreadable, and you don't have the option to recover it from
a copy pool. In this case, a pending reuse delay wouldn't help make the data
any more readable. I realise this doesn't address your concerns around
accidental deletion of a volume, but I believe there's a saying about great
responsibility accompanying great power.

I have no solution for splitting the DOMAIN.VMFULL option over multiple lines
but if this gets unwieldy you may want to think about the alternative approach
of creating tags in the virtual machine inventory to exclude specific VMs from
scheduled backups using the -VMTAGDATAMOVER client option.

I believe the case sensitivity of VM names in the DOMAIN.VMFULL option was an
unintended defect in 7.1.6.0. You should be able to revert to the previous
behaviour by applying an interim fix or maintenance release that includes APAR
IT15975.

Re: Thinking about replicate node command RFE, feedback welcome

I wholeheartedly agree that this is harder than it should be.

We set up bi-directional node replication and, even though every node should be
either a source or target for replication, we opted to put them in different
node groups to avoid the exact errors you are seeing. However this had to be
combined with some bespoke alerting scripts to take into account the human
factor and ensure we didn't miss any through being omitted from the node
groups, etc.

I'd certainly vote for an RFE that added WHEREREPLSTATE=SEND,SYNCSEND or
similar to the REPLICATE NODE command.

Re: TDP SQL backup fails but is reported as a success ??

-50 is the return code for DSM_RC_TCPIP_FAILURE. It can be indicative of a
number of problems including password errors, but since 6 of the 11 are
succeeding it's probably something else. Check the server activity log for
messages corresponding to the time of the client errors.

The scheduler is reporting the overall status of the SQLFULL.BAT script rather
than the part of the script that ran the TDPSQLC.EXE command. If subsequent
lines of the script reset errorlevel back to 0, then this will be the return
code of the overall script and the scheduler will report it being successful.

So either ensure that the TDPSQLC.EXE command is the last command in the
script, or capture the errorlevel immediately after the backup and set it on
completion of the script.

Was anyone else surprised to see the recent announcement that TSM 6.4 customers

Advice on backup and restore of virtualised vCenter Server / Platform Services Controller instances

2016-06-21 Thread Schofield, Neil (Storage & Middleware, Backup & Restore)
It's interesting to see how Chapter 12 of the vSphere Installation and Setup
Guide has changed between Updates 1 and 2 of vSphere 6.0:

Update 1:
https://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-60/topic/com.vmware.ICbase/PDF/vsphere-esxi-vcenter-server-601-installation-setup-guide.pdf
Update 2:
https://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-60/topic/com.vmware.ICbase/PDF/vsphere-esxi-vcenter-server-602-installation-setup-guide.pdf

Update 2 now makes explicit the possibility of using a third party product
which employs VADP (such as IBM Spectrum Protect?) as an alternative to vSphere
Data Protection for backing up VMs containing a vCenter Server and/or Platform
Services Controller. However the backup and recovery steps within are still
very much focused on using vSphere Data Protection.

So if I did want to use Spectrum Protect for VMware, are there any specific
guidelines relating to VMs containing vCenter Server / Platform Services
Controller? For instance VMware only support full image backups of such VMs and
require that all vCenter Server and Platform Services Controller instances are
backed up at the same time. Do IBM have any best practices as to how these
recommendations should be implemented with Spectrum Protect?

There are probably also specific considerations when recovering such a VM using
Spectrum Protect for VMware - eg recovering the VM containing the vCenter
Server when no vCenter Server is available. Please can anyone point me at any
helpful IBM docs which cover this scenario?

For a VM called VMNAME, you can try something like the following from a server
command line and see if it meets your needs.

select sub_entity as "VM",start_time as "Backup Start",end_time as "Backup
End",successful as "Success?" from summary_extended where sub_entity='VMNAME'
and activity='BACKUP' order by 2

Operations Centre can be used to run the report periodically and email it to
the server owner.

Re: TSM Server 7.1.4 woes

2016-04-29 Thread Schofield, Neil (Storage & Middleware, Backup & Restore)
Andy

Thanks for looking into this. We've got an upgrade from 7.1.1 to 7.1.4 planned
for next week so this thread got me a little worried as it does involve some
legacy clients.

Just so we're clear, can I reassure our users that with regards to this
specific issue there will be no difference in the behaviour of the legacy
clients between the two server versions? I know you managed to reproduce the
issue that Mark described on a 7.1.4 server, but I wondered whether you'd been
able to prove it also existed with any server version prior to 7.1.4?

Re: Reg: tsm ba client autodeploy package 7.1.4.1

2016-04-26 Thread Schofield, Neil (Storage & Middleware, Backup & Restore)
Srikanth

I complained about the very same thing last month:
https://adsm.org/lists/html/ADSM-L/2016-03/msg8.html

I've since discovered that IBM have indeed made the decision to no longer
supply exported packages for interim fixes. If you're using auto-deployment
then you need to find another mechanism for pushing out interim fixes because
it now only works for fix packs. (But then if you've got such a mechanism, why
bother with TSM auto-deployment in the first place?)

I've not given up hope that IBM will see how perverse this approach is and
reverse its decision. The current client fix pack (7.1.4) was released in
November and was followed by a flash in February which described how data loss
could occur and recommended 7.1.4.1 be installed on vulnerable systems. How
exactly did they think large shops were supposed to push that update out to
affected systems? Maybe customers should wait for the 7.1.5 client? No, hang on
- they skipped that one so we're currently waiting on 7.1.6 with its associated
.EXP files.

I agree that there are good reasons why customers should think carefully before
auto-deploying interim fixes. For what it's worth I think IBM should tell them
the reasons, publish the exported packages anyway and give them the *choice* of
being able to perform tightly targeted deployments where there is a requirement
to do so.

Neil

Self-contained application protection and ANS9499W messages

2016-03-15 Thread Schofield, Neil (Storage & Middleware, Backup & Restore)
We're doing some testing of the self-contained application protection features
of TSM for VE 7.1 and have come across a troubling problem that I would
appreciate your thoughts on.

The application protection features are disabled if the VMware Tools on the
guest are not 'current'. Fair enough if the Tools are years out-of-date, but
the TSM client software seems to use a strange way to check. We have seen
clients happily running application protection only to have it switched off
because a newer version of the VMware tools have been made available to the
client by an update to the ESX host. At least I'm assuming that's what happens
based on the following message in the logs:
ANS9499W VMware tools on virtual machine 'XX' need to be updated. IBM
Tivoli Storage Manager application protection will not be used.

Never mind that the guest continues to run the same version of the tools which
were previously working without issue - if there is an even slightly newer
version of the Tools available to the client then application protection will
be disabled until the guest is updated.

Just think about that for a minute. You update your vSphere hosts to the latest
patch levels with a view to updating the guests at your leisure and all of a
sudden your guests no longer have application protection. You're exposed. Am I
alone in thinking that disabling application protection in this scenario is a
bug, or at the least a very poor design choice? I'm guessing most shops will
have a lag between making the latest VMware Tools available and completing the
update on all their guests?

Automatic deployment of interim fixes

2016-03-03 Thread Schofield, Neil (Storage & Middleware, Backup & Restore)
Does anyone know if IBM have changed their policy on providing exported
packages for automatic deployment of interim fixes?

I've got .exp files for the 7.1.4 client fixpacks, but I am unable to find any
.exp files for client interim fixes beyond 7.1.3.2.

Using the Windows clients as an example, I would have expected to find exported
packages for 7.1.4.1 and 7.1.4.2 at the following location:
http://public.dhe.ibm.com/storage/tivoli-storage-management/patches/client/v7r1/Windows/autodeploy

What determines if an exported package is released alongside an interim fix?

It was my understanding that there was only an entry for a file space in the
occupancy table if it had a non-zero number of objects stored on the server.

If this is true then you probably need something like this:

select node_name from nodes where node_name not in (select node_name from
occupancy)

I agree wholeheartedly.

> *Thank you for pointing this out, Neil,* I will sadly have to lock my

Sadly it may not be that simple. The new thing I learnt today is that while IBM
use the 'good' VDDK (v6.0.0) with both 7.1.3.0 and 7.1.3.1, the interim fix
7.1.3.2 actually installs the 'bad' VDDK (v6.0.1)!

Things I learnt installing a v7.1.4 TSM for VE data mover

2016-01-05 Thread Schofield, Neil (Storage & Middleware, Backup & Restore)
A couple of gotchas that caught me out today might be useful info for somebody:

- The following document suggests TSM for VE 7.1.4 will work with
vSphere 5.1, 5.5 and 6.0:
http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21970882#Supported%20VMware%20vSphere%20versions

As I discovered the hard way, this seems to be stretching things a little. The
VDDK version that ships with the 7.1.4 client - v6.0.1 - has a rather nasty
limitation which means you can't back up VMs on vShpere 5.1 or 5.5 using the
SAN transport. IBM don't seem to have gone out of their way to draw your
attention to this, but details are in the VDDK 6.0.1 release notes embedded in
the following:
http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21672351

- In common I believe with TSM for VE 7.1.3, version 7.1.4 goes to
almost absurd lengths to conceal the fact that it isn't going to install the
Recovery Agent Device Driver. When presented with what is on the face of it a
full set of features to be installed, you have to expand the Recovery Agent
feature to realise that the Recovery Agent Device Driver sub-feature is now an
option that must be manually selected for installation (even if upgrading from
a version where the functionality was previously enabled.)

SKIPSYSTEMEXCLUDE test flag - what's the worst that could happen?

2015-09-01 Thread Schofield, Neil (Storage & Middleware, Backup & Restore)
For historic reasons that I've yet to track down, the following option was
added to the client options file on one of our Windows 2008 R2 servers:

TESTFLAG SKIPSYSTEMEXCLUDE

Now as a result of us using this test flag the Boot Configuration Data in
C:\BOOT is backed up as part of both the system state and the C: drive backup.
During a recent recovery test of the server both were restored and the server
didn't boot. The symptoms (and a probable cause) are exactly as described in
the following MS KB article:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2261423

So I was wondering if anyone else had had cause to use this particular test
flag and whether it had impacted on your ability to do a full system restore?

I'd just like to echo the sentiments expressed by others.

Wanda's sage advice (along with that of many others on this list) over my last
16 years working on ADSM/TSM has been a great source of support.

Wanda, I wish you a long and happy retirement.

Best regards

I don't know whether IBM have already communicated this to you, but it looks
like server interim fix 7.1.1.200 that you were waiting for has now been
slipped to Q2. It was previously slated for Q1 but I've just noticed the new
information in the link below:

https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/community/wikis/home?lang=en#/wiki/Tivoli%20Storage%20Manager/page/TSM%20Schedule%20for%20Fix-Packs

Time to dust off plan B?

Brilliant! Thanks to you and your DBA for the tip along with the explanation.
That works just fine on my systems too.

I'd seen the filespace with the null node name before but never made the
connection.

This works for me on V7.1.1:

select count(*) from nodes where node_name not in (select node_name from

Thanks for the suggestion. I would have thought both were equivalent, but I
tried each of them anyway and both gave the wrong answer:

tsm: Xselect count(*) from nodes where node_name not in (select node_name
from filespaces)

  Unnamed[1]

   0

tsm: Xselect count(*) from nodes where not node_name in (select node_name
from filespaces)

  Unnamed[1]

Regards

 Hi,
the last query should be select count(*) from nodes where node_name not in
 (select node_name from filespaces)

NOT keyword between column name and IN keyword.

Thanks for the response. I'm not sure whether this is platform related - all my
tests were conducted on servers running on AIX. While the problem is not
apparent on v5.x instances, it seems to affect v6.x instances at all our levels.

Like Margaret's experience back in 2012, the problem seems to relate
specifically to the use of NOT in the WHERE clause -eg in the following
example, only the last returns incorrect results:

tsm: Xselect count(*) from nodes

  Unnamed[1]

1519

tsm: Xselect count(*) from nodes where node_name in (select node_name from
filespaces)

  Unnamed[1]

1413

tsm: Xselect count(*) from nodes where not node_name in (select node_name
from filespaces)

  Unnamed[1]

I've just tried the select statement on v6.3.5.0 that Margaret tried below in

used?

It still works correctly if you take out the not.

 Any ideas?
