Re: Tapes unaccounted for???

2005-10-03 Thread Sean M English
Farren,

I've seen this happen before when the TSM DB tapes get out of sync with
DRM. Basically, what we do, is once a quarter we perform an audit. We get
a list from the offsite vendor and compare it to the output from q drm.
Any tapes that are on the offsite vendor's list and not on the q drm list
can be brought back and used as scratch tapes. What you might want to
check is the DBBACKUP expiration period under q drmstatus and see how long
the TSM DB backup tapes are being kept. Ideally, if you are doing offsite,
you want DRM to control when your DB tapes expire instead of using the del
volh t=dbbb command. Hope this helps out.

Re: Backup stgpool

2005-09-27 Thread Sean M English
Andrew,

You can use the maxpr=number option with the backup stgpool command.

i.e.: backup stgpool primarypool copypool maxpr=2 <---If you are backing up
a tape pool, this will use 4 tape drives...if its a disk pool, it will use
only 2 tape drives.

Re: 95% missed backups last night ( found the problem but what is the easy fix)

2005-09-22 Thread Sean M English
Geoff,

Was the server name changed by mistake on the TSM server side? We did this
once before when we migrated a TSM server to another server and we found
out the hard way that on the Windows side, not sure on AIX, the password is
stored in the registry based on the TSM server name and all our Windows
backups failed.

Re: Data Migration 3581 -> 3583

2004-11-23 Thread Sean M English

Bruno,

I did this same thing about 6 months ago. The only difference was we are on
AIX. We just hooked both libraries to the TSM server, created a new
devclass, library, tape storage pool, etc, for the new 3583 library and
than ran move data on all the old LTO1 tapes. Pretty straight forward
process. Just a little time consuming if you have a whole bunch of tapes.

Fellows,

I've faced the following situation: a customer has a 3581 Tape Library
(LTO
1) where is defined its storage pool's. It intends to adquire a 3583-L72
(LTO 2). Its TSM server (5.2.2) is running on a Windows 2k server xSeries
232. I gues it's possible to connect the two libraries to the TSM server
(there are sufficient interfaces). My questions are:
- Which is the best way to migrate (move) the data from the old 3581 (LTO1)
library volumes to the new 3583-L72 (LTO 2) volumes? On the top of my
reduced knowledge, I guess that a simple MOVE DATA, followed by some COPY
GROUP changes will solve this problem.
- If it uses the old LTO 1 cartridges on the new 3583 library (I know it's
not interesting), is there a way to make the migration easier?

Abstract: Users can view the server console without authentication with
  the server.

Problem: Users can view the server console without authentication with the
 server.

Who is Affected: Tivoli Storage Manager servers prior to version 5.1.8.0
 and 5.2.1.2 on all platforms.

Recommendation: Update the server to the patch or PTF level which includes
APAR IC37554 for your server version when it is available. This APAR is
included in 5.1.8.0 and 5.2.1.2 (all supported server platforms), 4.2.4.2
for MVS, and 3.1.2.111 for VM. VM customers will need to call IBM for the
password to the FTP site as the password in the previous README is no
 longer correct.

Conclusion: Under limited circumstance, the server may allow a user to
view the server console without requesting user's credentials. Please
follow the above recommendations to protect your server.

Greetings
I upgraded to the Oracle TDP 5.2 because we are using Oracle 9. I also have
an Oracle 8 instance and use the Oracle TDP v2. The Oracle TDP v2 works
fine
and the tdpo.opt is located /usr/tivoli/tsm/client/oracle/bin/. I can not
get the tdpoconf password for v5.2 to set the password. I have looked at
the
redbook for setting password and point to the dsm.opt and use the dsm.sys
for reference for the tdpo.opt files. When I run
/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/oracle/bin/tdpoconf password for the old TDP v2 the
password is set.

When I try to set the password for the new v5.2 here is what happens.

Re: restoration of backup copypool volumes?

2002-06-12 Thread Sean M English

Justin,

The way that you can go about recreating copypool volumes is very simple as
long as the primary volumes still exist. What you can do is mark the
copypool volume as destroyed. Then, run a backup storage pool of the
primary storage pool that the copy volume was apart of. Example:

Primary Stg Pool: StgPoolA; contains volume called "A"

Copy Stg Pool: CopyofStgPoolA; contains copy of volume A called CopyA

Mark "CopyA" destroyed. Run a backup storage pool process on StgPoolA, and
the TSM DB will see that volume CopyA has been destroyed and will recreate
the copypool volume that has been marked destroyed from the primary volume
called "A".

Hope this helps and I didn't confuse you to much :-)

Sean

Re: upgrade from 4.1 to 4.2

2002-03-26 Thread Sean M English

The only thing to be wary of when going to TSM 4.2, is the issue of having
a double zero string in the password file. TSM 4.2.0 and 4.2.1 can not
read the password file if the file contains this double zero string. We
recently upgraded to TSM 4.2.1.25 and had major problems with passwords.
After a call to support, we figured out that the password we were using was
generating a double zero string. The password we were trying to use was 10
characters in length...they suggested not making the password over 6
characters in length. This reduces the chances of having a double zero
string in the password file. Also, you will want to look at updating the
password manually for your clients. When password access is set to
generate, and a new password is generated, you may run into the above
mentioned problem.

According to support, this problem should be fixed in TSM 4.2.2 and TSM
5.1.

TDP for Informix

2002-03-13 Thread Sean M English

*SMer's,

Last night we were attempting to upgrade an AIX 4.3.3 client from TSM 4.1.2
to TSM 4.2.1.25. The install went fine, everything was installed
correctly. However, when we went to test a log backup from Informix, the
node name that the Informix data backs up under would always get locked out
of the TSM server because of an Invalid Password error. We sync'd up the
passwords between TDP for Informix and the TSM server fine, but it was like
Informix could not read the password file that was generated. We opened up
the directory and password file to 777 just in case the permission bits
might be the culprit. That did not work either. I did notice that in
4.2.1.x, the name of the password file has been changed to TSM.PWD. My
question is, do I need to be at a later level of TDP for Informix when I
upgrade to TSM 4.2.1.x?

Environment:

Client: AIX 4.3.3, TDP for Informix 4.1.0, current client level is 4.1.2
and everything works. trying to go to 4.2.1.25 and TDP does not work

Server: AIX 4.3.3, running TSM 4.2.1.11

Any thoughts on what might be happening?

One way you could disable an archive for a particular node, temporarily, is
to remove the node from the archive schedule:

And when you want to put it back, all you would need to do is add the node

Stor Manager"

OK, guys and gals. Need some assistance, especially since I did RTFM and
the book is in error.

I have a damaged tape. I went to the TSM manual (even checked the latest
CD I received with my 4.2 server) under:

Recovering a Lost or Damaged Storage Pool Volume

It says to:

1. Determine the copy pool volumes that contain the backup copies of the
files that were stored on the volume that was destroyed by entering:

   restore volume dsm087 preview=volumesonly

This command produces a list of offsite volumes that contain the backed up
copies of the files that were on tape volume DSM087.

Well, every time I issue this command (using my tape number, of course), I
get:

F ADSM,RESTORE VOLUME 040287 PREVIEW=VOLUMESONLY
ANR5965I Console command: RESTORE VOLUME 040287 PREVIEW=VOLUMESONLY
ANR2017I Administrator SERVER_CONSOLE issued command: RESTORE VOLUME
040287 PREVIEW=VOLUMESONLY
ANR2020E RESTORE VOLUME: Invalid parameter - VOLUMESONLY.

What gives ?

What is the correct procedure to handle this situation ?

Re: manually ejecting a tape from a 3494 library

2001-10-24 Thread Sean M English

Shawn,

You can use the following command to put the tapes in the I/O Door:

mtlib -l/dev/lmcp0 -CV -tff10

FF10 is the category of a tape that is located in the I/O door on a 3494.

I have some tapes inside our robot that are possibly miss-labeled.

I would like to have the robot eject these tapes and I thought the mtlib
command would be the answer. I cannot figure out how to do it though.

Any suggestions?

Has anyone successfully restored RMAN/TDP data with copypool tapes?
We gave it a try this weekend for the first time at a DR drill and had no
success.
It almost appears like rman holds the storage pool name and possibly the
vol ser in its catalog and when it attempts to retrieve the data it can't
because TSM has the primary copies marked as destroyed as designed.

Re: Monitoring Rman clients

2000-12-13 Thread Sean M English

James,

In the environment that I am in, one way RMAN backups are monitored is by
scripts that the DBAs create to let them, and myself, know when backups
fail. A page is sent to us, as well as an email. Hope this helps.

Anyone care to share their procedures for monitoring Rman tdp backups?
I'm trying to figure out a way to determine how much data gets backed up
per session.
Unfortunately( or maybe fortunately) our DBA's execute the scripts that
kickoff rman so I reall can't figure a way to get daily stats.

ANR0440W- having problems with this error

2000-11-14 Thread Sean M English/Charlotte/IBM

I was wondering if anyone else has ever seen these types of errors on their

at different code levels ( i.e. 3.7.3.6, 3.7.3.8, etc):

ANRD shmcomm.c(1562): shm_init: Socket read

We do have Shared Memory enabled in the dsmserv.opt, but when looking in
the activity log, no sessions are using Shared Memory...excpet the ones
that have no node names like above. When looking through the activity log
before and after these errors, I see no sessions starting with those
session numbers. Its like they are ghost sessions. If anyone could help on
this situation, I would be most greatful. Thanks.

SMer's

I know DRM is complicated and has a whole 4 day class devoted to it.

We have the DRM module but have never implemented it because no one knows
what
to do with it without going to the class.

With that said, is there some DRM manual that I could read and get the
basics of
setup for DRM without going to the DRM class? or,
Would I just make things worse by trying to setup DRM without the class?

Terry,

Thanks for your help. One more question, what kind of backup times are you
seeing and what kind of network are you using? I was just wondering if the
network was a dedicated network for your Oracle clients and are other
backups going on at the same time? Once again, thanks for your help.

Hi Sean -

We have various RMAN clients using anywhere from 1 to 4 channels - we do
not
have collocation turned on, because of problems such as you mentioned. To
increase our times, we turned off collocation and increased channels where necessary. I am not sure
how much your clients back up - but ours back up anywhere from 100gig to
250
gig at night and do archives during the day.

In either case, if you do opt to keep collocation turned on, the answer to
your question is yes, it will wait for the media and then start writing the
data as it would if it was not waiting. We have had this situation one time
when we did not realize that the tape pool got low. However, we have found
that RMAN work more efficiently when collocation is turned off and multiple
channels are ran and restore speed was not effected.

Terry

Subject: RMAN question??

I have a question about a client that is using RMAN to backup there Oracle
databse to TSM.

TSM Server:
3.7.3.6 on AIX 4.3.2

We recently changed the backup method for the Oracle databases from going
to disk to going directly to tape. We created a unique nodename for each of
the Oracle DB servers. These servers are in there own domain. When we first
tested this, we saw great results (in terms of speed) to backup the Oracle
DB. However, now when the servers run their backups each night, they are in
a constant Receive Wait and the time to back them up as actually increased.

Currently they are allocating one channel for each backup. The reasoning
behind one channel was that anything other than 1 channel (i.e. 2 channels)
the other one would be in a media wait because of colocation. My question
is, has anyone else seen where a backup like this was in a constant receive
wait when using only on channel? I have a thought, but I am not 100% sure
if it would solve my problem because I am not 100% sure on how RMAN groups
its data. My thought is if you run 2 channels, one will be running and the
other waiting. However, will that second channel already have the data
grouped together and ready to transfer when the other one gets finished?
Let me know if anyone else has seen this. If I need to provide more
infomation, let me know. Thanks for the help.
