Impact of TSM upgrade to 4.2 on Fibre channel Protocol

2002-04-29 Thread Subash, Chandra

Hi guys

I am upgrading my TSM server from version 3.7.4 to 4.2.1.13.
2 Questions

1. What should be the upgrade path

3.7.4 --- 4.2 4.2.1.0 4.2.1.13
Is it right ??

2. The install mentions that all FCP ( fibre channel protocol definitions
will be lost and have to be re - installed ). I have got some FCP Disk
drives and Fibre channel adapters attached to my tsm server . Please advise

FW: Help ??

2002-04-10 Thread Subash, Chandra

 Paul my man

I have a question for you . I did an archive of a novell server . The
archive ran for hours fine as it got hundreds of dir. and files . BUT once
the archive finished , I notice many missing dir. and files . These seem
to happen randomly. Any idea Paul .Is it a bug or a known issue . I
cannot find any similar issues in mailing list.

One simple step that definitely improves expiration processing speed is
having enough BUFPOOLSIZE. do a q db f=d and see what the cache
Hit Pct is. Ideally is 98 % or better. If much lower, even 90% then
expire
will take longer. Also Cache Wait Pct should always be zero.

Hi,

I think you might be running into the same problem we are - our expire
command never stops - but we do not see any more expired after about 1
hour.. it examines millions of files - but only expires about 20 or 30
thousand. IBM is lookining into the problem, and we have provided traces,
and tried different solutions. Right now we run the command every morning
with:
expire inventory skipdirs=yes dur=120

TSM: 4.2.1.9
AIX 433
IBM 3494 Library

We also have a terrible time with scratch tapes. Some days we have 60 then
none.

We run expiration daily for a couple of hours, and we realized
 that we were
not getting enough scratch tapes back. We decided to run expiration
indefinitely until all objects that need to be expired are removed.
Expiration is been running for a week with 9 millions objects
expired. Is there a way to find out how many objects are eligible for
expiration? That way, I can determine how long it is going to take.

Becky,

I have experienced that before.

What I found out was, I had 2 lmcpd daemons running.

No library communication from TSM, I could see the Library from AIX. (TSM
got confused and hung itself)

That does not seem to be the case for you unless you shutdown the physical
server? . ?

When it came back up it started fresh daemons ??

I killed te daemon processes, then halted TSM and brought it back up.

Worked for me.

I am running
tsm server 4.1.2
aix 4.3.3
12 3590E1A in a 3494
TDP for R/3 3.2.06

This past weekend at 16:00 my backup started by backing up my archive logs
to disk. It opened 10 of 11 threads and then did absolutely nothing else.
Other processes started during the night and anything that did not require
a
tape drive ran and completed successfully (dr tape courier to vault,
expiration, various admin commands) but anything that needed a drive opened
and did nothing more. I discovered it Sunday morning around 11 by logging
in, noticing the problem and doing a q dr. It never returned. I have had
a
similar situation before and my experience has said if you do a q dr and it
doesn't return recycle the TSM Server. I did that and everything continued
to normal but I have no idea why this happened. I am honestly not sure
where to look. Is it TDP? Is it the TSM Server? Is it something to do
with the tape drives? Any suggestions?

First of all I do not know Andy's position at Tivoli.
And read what is written in the README:
This is not officially supported by IBM, but IBM support people
do participate in the discussions, along with other users.
So IMHO here Andy is just a colleague. More skilled in ADSM/TSM, closer
to
the developers, but just a colleague.
If something shows up on the web-site or in docs on media that would be
  official.

Andrew Raibeck answered I am almost certain that this change in
behavior
  is
not deliberate. The APAR is going to be handled as a code defect
Isn't that you'r Tivoli official answer?

This was already discussed in the list. Look for the thread Windows
client
behavior change at 4.2.1.0 and answer of Andrew Raibeck from
9.10.2001.
But it is possible that Andy and this Bob are just having different
PERSONAL opinions. We still do not have answer from any Tivoli
official, do
  we?

i HAVE GOT THIS EMAIL FROM ONE OF MY FRIENDS. GUYS WHAT DO YOU THINK IS
IT
  TRUE ?

  Hi Guys

According to Tivoli Support they have made an alteration to way client
v4.2.1 reports Result code 4 to the server. Earlier version clients
would
allow for a certain number of files to fail during the backup and still
report to the server that the Schedule was successful. However version
  4.2.1
has been altered so that a result code of failed will be reported to
the
server even if 1 file fails during a backup.
ntcmachine had been failing on some WINNT system files which I have
added
exceptions for under direction of Tivoli support and now backups of
this
  machine seem to be successful.
Bob from Tivoli suggested that if we are worried about seeing failed
result
codes on the daily report that there may be a way to generate a report
listing statistics of how many files or how much data had been backed
up
from each machine to provide a more accurate picture as to whether the
  backups were successful.
