Path definition

2003-10-01 Thread Sylvia Nergard
Hi folks!

My environment is TSM 5.2 on Windows 2000, tapelibrary is 3583 lto on the
SAN.

II wonder.when defining path for tapelibrary and drives, should the
device parameter be \\.\Tape0 and Changer0 (which is how Windows sees the
devices?)etc, or mt0.0.0.1 an lb1.0.0.1(which is how TSM sees the
devices?)?
What decides which device name we are going to use in such cases?
I'm running IBM Windows device driver for both library and drives.

kindly regards

support matrix

2003-03-06 Thread Sylvia Nergard
Hi!

I'm looking for a support matrix that can tell me which TSM client that is
supported by a TSM server.
I think I had one before Tivoli moved their web sites

I have recognized that a 4.1.x client can't back up to a 5.1.5.4 server.
The client is Downlevel. Client 4.2.x works fine.
If I upgrade the client 4.1.x to 5.1.5.x, will I then be able to restore
tha data that was backed up with a 4.1.x ?

I just need to be sure before I start the upgrade.

Thanks Geirr!

yes I had backup data on the TSM server from a newer client. But I
installed an older one just to test thisit is in a test
environment..and that's nice to have!!!
I have read about those 4.1.2.x unicode problems, so I'm aware :-)

Hi Sylvia
I don't believe you have a problem with the 4.1.x client. When it TSM
reports Client is Donwnlevel it's because the client have had a later
version installed (4.1.x), and that something has been backed up, with the
newer client version.
I'm nut sure, but I believe you can use (almost) any client version for
backup to a later version server. At least I'm using a 3.1 client, backing
up to a 5.6.x server (very special client - but still), and I've got
customers on every TSM server and TSM client level, from 3.7 to 5.1, with
all kinds of client versions. There is only one version I definetively,
would steer around, and that is 4.1.2.x - it has some awful problems with
unicode characters (Ø Ü) and such. (If you want to know more about this -
check adsm.org or tivoli site for the umlaut problem.)

And YES, you'll be able to restore files backed up with an earlier version.

Upgrade 4.1.1 to 5.1.6.2

2003-03-04 Thread Sylvia Nergard
I'm gonna upgrade a TSM server from 4.1.1 to 5.1.6.x on a NT4 server.

I can see through the readme file and the Quick Start Guide that I should
remove the current 4.1.1 TSM installation, and install 5.1.0 /5.1.5 in the
same directory (I was hoping that I could do an uppgrade without moving the
existing TSM software).

Is that all? Will all info about admins, nodes, storage pools remain and
show up in the new TSM server?
Or should I do an export /import og such information?

Anyone had any bad experience about this that I should know of?

Later I'm gonna move the TSM server from the NT4 box to a new physical w2k
server...but I'll take one thing at a time.

Re: Upgrade 4.1.1 to 5.1.6.2

2003-03-04 Thread Sylvia Nergard
Hi!

Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
It says in the readme file that with TSM 4.2.x you can do an install
without removing the program firstbut with TSM 4.1you should remove the
program first.
Didn't know that it is so big difference between those two versions.
I feel that I have to do as the documentation says.

Was it a 4.1.x - 5.1.x uppgrade you did in the way that you mentioned
under?

I have never done the remove/install procedure you are talking about.
Instead I typically just pop the new CD-ROM or launch the setup file if
I download it and perform an upgrade. All of your existing node and
data will remain the same and you should not lose anything.

ANR8302E error on drive

failure).
Refer to Appendix D in the 'Messages' manual for
   recommended action.
ANR8792E Unrecoverable drive failures on drive MT1.0.0.2
(mt1.0.0.2); drive is now taken offline.

This has happend twice, when I set the drive online again it works.
Is it really a hardware error, or could it be something else that makes TSM
to set this drive offline?

Are you going through any kind of firewall?

Web Client hangs for a unix client

2003-02-08 Thread Sylvia Nergard
Hi!

When I try to open a web session against a Linux server (Platform: Linux86
Client OS Level: 2.2.19-8t) I have problems.
The first time i get connected (through Explorer), but i miss som eitems
(the picture) at the gui, the backup-, restore- etc.buttons are there.
I can start a backup but then the Java GUI hangs. I have to kill the task.
When I try to connect later after I have connected once , the Explorer is
just thinking and thinking
I have to go back at the Linux box and kill the dsmcad prosess. When I
start up againg I can connect to the client at port 1581 (has defines
Httpport 1581 in dsm.sys, if not doing this it seemes that he tries to use
any port). But after I end that session I can't get in touch with the
client again without restarting the dsmcad process.
Is the earlier websession still holding on to the port?
Or is it something with the webinstallation package on the client?
How important is it that it is the right type of Linux (this is Trustix)?
I thought maybe it was the kernel level that was the important thing here.
Which part of the installastin package is necessary?
We can not run the GUI local on the client because the machine doesn't meet
that requirements, therefore it is important to make the web client to
work.

We are using the 4.2.3 Backup archive Client on the Linux machine, backing
up to TSM Server 5.1.5.4 on Windows.

Using the command line at the client works just fine.

Anyone else experienced something like this, and maybe have a solution?

version 5.1.5 TSM and higher

2002-12-06 Thread Sylvia Nergard
Is it right that I have 2 options to install TSM 5.1.5?

1. Install 5.1.0 and patch up to 5.1.5.1
or
2. Install 5.1.5 as a base installation

I have seen some discussions on this that confuses me a bit.
Anyone that can confirm this?

Best practices to back up a recovery catalog (rcvcat)?

2002-08-30 Thread Sylvia Nergard

Hi list!

What is the best practice to back up the recovery catalog in this case?

I'm backing up Oracle Databases (online) with Tivoli Data Protection for
Oracle v2.2.1.
I have created a recovery catalog in an another database on the same server
as my target database
(I know that it is not recommended to have a recoverycatalog at the same
server as the targte database,
but because of costs I have no other choice).
Should I back up the recovery catalog online with TDPO, offline with TDPO
or regular filebackup???
Should the database with the recoverycatalog have its own recoverycatalog?
If so, can I use the target database (sounds little dangerous)
or should I create a new database to content the recoverycatalogs
recoverycatalog?
If so how should I back up the recoverycatalogs recoverycatalog?
Should the recoverycatalog run in archive mode under all type of backups of
the recoverycatalog?

I'm new to Oracle and RMAN so I need some advice how to handle backup of
the recoverycatalog...
