Either that or decide to write your TSM DB backups somewhere else, such as SAN. There is no way around this. How many Full DB backups are you keeping? Is that more than you need? If so, see the DELETE VOLHISTORY command to get rid of old backups and release scratch tapes. A typical thing is to run a scheduled DELETE VOLHIST TODAY-8 or something like that after a successful rc=0 full database backup. Always make sure you're keeping your most recent FULL database backup and all the incremental backups after it. Do your own inventory of tapes in your tape library, and make sure you can identify what each of them is used for. They will either be VOLUMEs or they'll be listed in the Volume History File for DB backups etc. You may find some free tapes where you did not expect them. Or you may find library slots taken up by defective tapes that can be replaced with good new ones. Just be careful here, not to free a tape with needed data on it. TSMVE file level restore problem and some other questions

ERROR ANS3101E The mount operation for virtual machine 'a101sr77' failed with rc = 6807 ERROR ANS3174E (RC6841) The VM mount failed. i see this also with full backup from today and i have no chance to mount this volume for file level restore. also it is not possible to mount it with the recovery agent. but this worked well some weeks ago with old tsmve 7.1.0.2 level. the configuration wizard says, all is ok. with best regards Stefan Savoric further questions: tsm server splits tsmve backups in blocks with 134 MB or so. TSM needs the metadata for backups and restores. Next, I have found after extensive testing (and a PMR with IBM) that the transport method NBD is much quiker than hotadd for restore. If you have a physical data mover, you can use SAN as transport method, but I have not been able to test the restore performance of that method. If have created a seperate data mover node (and cad) for restores only with: VMVSTORTRANSPORT nbd in the opt file. Furthermore, I recommend to read VMware's VDDK programming guide to fully understand the underlying infrastructure at: https://www.vmware.com/support/developer/vddk/ >From this guide on page 82: *Best Practices for SAN Transport* For array-based storage, SAN transport is often the best performing choice for backups when running on a physical proxy. It is disabled inside virtual machines, so use SCSI HotAdd instead on a virtual proxy. SAN transport is not always the best choice for restores. It offers the best performance on thick disks, but the worst performance on thin disks, because of round trips through the disk manager APIs, AllocateBlock and ClearLazyZero. For thin disk restore, NBDSSL is usually faster, and NBD is even faster. Changed Block Tracking (CBT) must be disabled for SANrestores. Also, SAN transport does not support writing to redo logs (snapshots or child disks), only to base disks. 2014-04-26 8:23 GMT+02:00 TSM : > Hello, > > our restore performance (restore vm) is very poor. I'll start by saying to make sure you understand what TSM products are included in the "capacity" license proposal. From memory I don't remember the exact ones but it does not apply to all TSM licenses. This obviously means that the capacity license model may be attractive to some and unattractive to others. Your IBM rep should be able to clarify this. Also, in our environment we use a Data Domain backend which as you may know prefers all incoming data to be uncompressed and unencrypted. Since the TSM servers have no knowledge of the DD processes it reports the raw storage numbers before compression and deduplication which negatively affected the capacity licensing pricing. We opened discussions on this issue with IBM but they refused to budge or negotiate an adjustment for the "actual" storage used. Needless to say that position was not too warmly received and we 86'ed the whole discussion. Interestingly, had we used IBM storage/deduplication on the backend they would use the actual storage, but no such provision for Data Domain. TSM 6.2 > 6.3 upgrade problem

When I check the db2_inst.log as directed, I'm getting the message: DBI1149E To execute this program, you must be the owner of the installation copy. Explanation: The current DB2 copy was not installed by the user who is running the program. User response: Log in as the user who installed the current copy of DB2 and rerun the command. Thing is, I'm doing this while logged in as root, which is how the 6.2 software was installed as well. I'm not finding any additional errors as of yet, and Google doesn't have much to help me.** Launching TSM in console mode just confirms that DB2 didn't upgrade, as it fails reporting that DB2 version 9.7.0.4 is required, while 9.7.0.2 is installed. The messages themselves are pretty clear; I just can't tell what needs to be changed in order for it to work. Thanks!

Old problem?
I swear I've seen this before, years ago on older versions, but I don't for the life of me remember what caused it, and Google searches aren't turning anything up. I've got a Windows 2008 6.2 server, and a number of Windows clients at 5.5. At the moment, they're going straight to tape. What I'm seeing is that a backup will mount a tape, write a bit of data, and dismount, and immediately request a remount. Like I said, I'm convinced I saw this once years ago, and that it was one odd little configuration setting somewhere. But I can't think of what it could be. The mount retention on the device class was left at the default of 60 minutes, and I did see idle tapes still mounted last night, so that appears to be working normally. I'd appreciate any thoughts you all have. Thanks!

hello, with new tsm server 6 (now the newest version 6.2.3 on windows 2008) we see performance issues on archiving sap data with commonstore (cssap) here is a part of the cssap log 18:44:25; 0; 7827; ARCHIVE;A3;28.751;14.306;06076; ;4E42810B97C906E5E10080010AFAFA3D;;0.0;data;;;application/pdf;D:\CSSAP\temp\cs_HTTP60145.tmp;52682.0; 18:44:25; 0; 7828; ARCHIVE;A3;28.751;14.290;03028; ;4E416BE5170D67BFE10080010AFAFA3D;;0.0;data;;;application/pdf;D:\CSSAP\temp\cs_HTTP60146.tmp;16084.0; 18:44:41; 0; 7829; ARCHIVE;A3;29.469;15.148;06076; ;4E4283AC97C906E5E10080010AFAFA3D;;0.0;data;;;application/pdf;D:\CSSAP\temp\cs_HTTP60148.tmp;120799.0; 18:44:41; 0; 7830; ARCHIVE;A3;29.469;15.148;03028; ;4E416BF7170D67BFE10080010AFAFA3D;;0.0;data;;;application/pdf;D:\CSSAP\temp\cs_HTTP60147.tmp;49075.0; 18:44:55; 0; 7832; ARCHIVE;A3;29.500;14.337;03028; ;4E42875997C906E5E10080010AFAFA3D;;0.0;data;;;application/pdf;D:\CSSAP\temp\cs_HTTP60150.tmp;79822.0; 18:44:55; 0; 7831; ARCHIVE;A3;29.531;14.352;06076; ;4E42875097C906E5E10080010AFAFA3D;;0.0;data;;;application/pdf;D:\CSSAP\temp\cs_HTTP60149.tmp;16420.0; 18:45:09; 0; 7834; ARCHIVE;A3;28.579;14.227;06076; ;4E30DFA40FF92F32E10080030AFAFA3D;;0.0;data;;;application/pdf;D:\CSSAP\temp\cs_HTTP60151.tmp;23139.0; 18:45:09; 0; 7833; ARCHIVE;A3;28.595;14.227;03028; ;4E428ACC97C906E5E10080010AFAFA3D;;0.0;data;;;application/pdf;D:\CSSAP\temp\cs_HTTP60152.tmp;109633.0; interesting, that after archiving 2 files, there is a pause of 13 to 16 sec every time. so the import of some thousand files takes about 6 hours or more. environment IBM CommonStore for SAP - Server 8.4.0.13, installed on tsm server TSM Server 6.2.3 , target destination for cssap archives = diskpool we also see performance issues on importing other data from another tsm server. reorg of the tsm database is working. we do not see any performance issues on migrate, copy or something else any ideas? with best regards stefan savoric
Re: TSM 5-6 upgrade issue
I ended up doing some permissions futzing from the old 5.5 server instance directory and starting it from there, which did work. I decided permissions there were no longer terribly important anyway, since it'll be going away soon. Everything is up and running now (yay, I get to go home!). Thanks for the responses, and also for the tip about MobaXTerm. I will definitely be checking that out. TSM 5-6 upgrade issue
Hey all, I'm stuck on this upgrade. I'm trying to go from TSM 5.5 to 6.2, on an AIX 6.1 server. I don't have a gui interface to the server so I'm using the manual method, and I seem to be missing a piece. The problem I'm running into is on the dsmserv loadformat step. When I run the command as the instance owner (tsminst1), I get: exec(): 0509-036 Cannot load program dsmserv because of the following errors: 0509-150 Dependent module libdb2.a(shr_64.o) could not be loaded. 0509-022 Cannot load module libdb2.a(shr_64.o). 0509-026 System error: A file or directory in the path name does not exist. As an experimental troubleshooting step, I tried running it as root, and got: ANR7800I DSMSERV generated at 17:54:46 on Apr 15 2011. Tivoli Storage Manager for AIX Version 6, Release 2, Level 2.30 Licensed Materials - Property of IBM (C) Copyright IBM Corporation 1990, 2010. All rights reserved. ANR0162W Supplemental database diagnostic information: -1092:**No State Information Available (-2)**:-1092 (**No Other Information Available (93)**). ANR2678E Server database format failed. This suggests to me that all of the "hooks" are in place, and that there is a permissions issue somewhere on the server. I've been beating my brains out trying to find it, or to find anything else that looks out of place, with no success. I've logged in and out, stopped and started DB2, sourced the userprofile file, and am having no luck. I would be grateful (thrilled, even) for any suggestions. Thanks!

how to restore user data out of an "archive mailbox" on exchange 2010?
hello, i am testing some of the new exchange 2010 features with the tsm tdp client. i have installed the newest tdp client 6.1.3.1. single mailbox recovery with exchange 2010 works. but some of the users have an "archive mailbox" on another database (thats a new exchange 2010 feature). I want to restore only the data from one user out of this "archive mailbox" if it was accidentally deleted. Out of the TDP GUI, you have 2 possibilities: First restore the complete "archive mailbox database" or go to "single mailbox recovery" and you only get the normal mailbox content back. my question: how it is possible to restore only the content of "archive mailbox" on user level? has the tdp command client more functionality or do i have to work with some ms powershell scripts? thank you. with best regards stefan savoric

is it a bug? (import with mergefilespace=yes with tsm server 6.2.2.30)
Hello, source tsm-server 5.3 target server 6.2.2.30 Export about 10 Millions of small Commonstore data server-to-server tooks about one day, mergefilespace=no (120 GB of data) the same export with mergefilespace=yes was killed by me after exporting only 500.000 files in 30 hours. in the filespace, were only a few thousand files before. Import on tsm server 6.2.2.30 from media (disk, about 600.000 small files)) with mergefilespace=yes (the prior imported 10 millions files are still in this filespace) is running now for 2 days and shows no errors but also no development in how many files are now imported (tsm-server about 4 GB RAM and DB2-service 3 GB RAM, growing and growing, 10 more GB of RAM are available). any comments are welcome. with best regards stefan savoric ps: the local tsm backup is much slower than copying files inside this server. it seems there are some performance issues in this tsm server version (6.2.2.30)

Question about TSM 6 server desaster recovery
Hello, we have no actual desaster, but we have a question about TSM 6 server desaster recovery. For a TSM server desaster recovery with TSM version < 6 it was possible to modify older devconfig and volhist files before running a TSM db restore. (devconfig: library-slot of cartridge; volhist: cartridge label, any new date and time, devclass). Now with TSM version 6 there are more data for every TSM db backup in the volhist file. Do we really need these data with a TSM db desaster recovery or is it possible to set dummy numbers? Have you any experience with this? Thanks in advance Andreas.
how to delete old oracle backups at the tsm server
Hello, We use tdp for oracle with no catalog database. We set the oracle parameter control_file_record_keep_time too low. So the "delete obsolete" removed nothing, because oracle removed the entries earlier from the controlfiles. Now we have to delete a lot of oracle backups at the tsm server, which oracle doesn't know. Any ideas how to delete the old backups? Thanks in advance Andreas.

VMware backup questions
I've been searching online, including a number of listserv posts, and what I'm finding is that the information I'm looking for seems pretty fragmented. I'm trying to figure out what the options are for backing up a VMware version 4 implementation in an all-Linux environment. I've determined that a proxy server is needed still for VADP/vStorage, just as for VCB. It appears that the proxy server must be run on Windows. I'm a bit confused about what's supported, though. So my questions are: --In one place in the client manual, it says that file-level backups are only supported for Windows VMs. I read on another website that TSM only works with VADP for file-level backups as of now, and for full VM backups, VCB is still required. Does this mean that VCB must be present in order to back up Linux guests, and that only full VM backups are available? That doesn't seem right to me, but that's where the bits of information I've run across leads me. --If the answer to the above is yes, does anyone know if there will be more options for Linux VMs any time soon, and what it's likely to be? --Has anyone been able to locate a single, comprehensive resource describing what functions are available in what circumstances and what's required for TSM with VADP? Someone please tell me I'm missing something Thanks!

Re: tsm question
It really depends on what's been requested. If you're talking about capturing today's copy as it is on the client now, then backing them up to different node names (in a different policy domain, even!) will probably be easiest for future reference. If you're talking about including historical data, then it gets more complicated. If you want the entire server, you can copy the policy domain to another, change all the retentions on the management classes to NOLIMIT, and move the nodes to the new domains. Because the management class names haven't changed, it'll prevent the expiration of inactive files. (SESSION: 2888, PROCESS: 36) why there are so much skipped backup files when i only export the backed up data from the last 24 hours? the import ist successfull ANR0986I Process 36 for IMPORT (from Server yyy_SERVER1) running in the BACKGROUND processed 70251 items for a total of 193,404,830,165 bytes with a completion state of SUCCESS at 17:26:21. (SESSION: 2888, PROCESS: 36) over the time we see some performance issues, it depends not on bandwith or reading data from source server (all data on disks) i suggest it depends on growing database size on the target server. now our export is 3 times slower than on the beginning (200 gb data per day) will it help to reduce the verexist parameter on the target tsm server, as today we save 35 versions on both locations? or will it help to modify the export command, that only backupactive data will be exported to the target server? please help with your comments with best regards stefan savoric
Re: NBU guy in TSM shop and I need help
If I'm reading what you wrote in the first post correctly, then you're keeping every version of every file ever created, so long as there is still a version of the file active on a client. And when a file gets deleted on the client, you're immediately purging every version of that file from the database. (In this case, "immediately" actually means "during the first expiration once a backup has run and detected that the file is gone.") So if you have enough files changing and not being deleted, then overall, yes, you could be using a large total quantity of tape space to store all of those versions, especially if there are databases in the mix. At the same time, you're not providing any real recoverability for files that are accidentally deleted. If you want to post the output of the "query copygroup" command it might clarify things. How to fix it? First order of business is to decide on what is appropriate retention for the data, existing and deleted. It's unlikely that you really need to keep every version of every current file forever; you could probably reclaim a good bit of space if you adjusted that. And get better protection by increasing the retention of the deleted files (to anything other than zero, really!). If you decide to implement collocation for some or all of the data, you can allow it to happen naturally as data expires and reclaims, or you can use 'move data' or 'move nodedata' to speed it along. It's definitely fixable. Re: How to communicate with tsm otherthan port 1500
I see from the below that you have two client nodes configured to back up from the same client system. What I'm not clear on is whether they're backing up to the same TSM server instance, or to two different instances. If it's two server instances, then are they on the same physical server or different servers. The TCPPORT parameter in each stanza needs to match the lladdress of the SERVER it's pointing to (as seen in the query status command). To run the two client nodes on different ports, add the TCPCLIENTPORT parameter to each stanza. On Thu, Aug 5, 2010 at 1:18 PM, yoda woya wrote: > I have two nodes. exchange 2010 vss backups
hello, i want to save daily, monthly and yearly backups of exchange 2010 databases. daily, monthly and yearly backups have there own nodenames, all in the same domain vss backups work over ba client (another domain) i have implemented tdpexc.cfg's and dsm.opts 3 times and vsspolicy is set right in the config-files. i did backups with the *.cmd files, with the options /configfile and /tsmoptfile to start the right node. everything is working now what i found out was. 1. when you open "restore"button in the tdp gui's, then all backups show the "standard" mgmtclass "daily", also sql queries on the tsm server did not show, if the backups are going to the right mgmtclass. 2. in the past, there was the recommendation to backup "full" for daily and "copy" for the others. Is this also true for Exchange 2010? the manual for tsm for mail is very confusing, i need a manual for exchange 2010 only! let me say, tsm manuals are often very confusing. with best regards stefan savoric

Re: Windows 2000 client
ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/storage/tivoli-storage-management/patches/client/v5r3/Windows/x32/v536/ should get you where you're going. Be aware that you'll have to type the file name in manually rather than clicking on the link. IBM has, intentionally or accidentally, inserted a single blank space in front of many (most?) of the links on the FTP site, so it's no longer possible to simply click all the way through to what you're looking for anymore. Re: disk / file pool on SAN without SANergy or GPFS?
Thanks for the information. It seems that SANergy gets fairly bad press on this forum, or are there success stories out there too? And the software seems ancient (last release in 2002?) Is it still a viable solution? I was hoping that a FILE library shared and managed by the TSM server would handle locking, but this kind of storage is new to me. Thanks... Ken From: Gary Bowers To: ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU Date: 05/05/2010 09:17 PM Subject: Re: disk / file pool on SAN without SANergy or GPFS? In short no. Sanergy is what allows you to share the filesystem amongst multiple servers. GPFS is a an alternative to SANergy that also provides the file and block locking necessary to share a physical device among multiple hosts. I may be wrong, but I believe that the only two supported LAN free protocols are GPFS and SANergy. If TSM supported CIFS or NFS shares as stgpools it might be able to do something similar with a filer, but I'm pretty confident that is not supported. You definitely cannot do it with iSCSI, because that is a block device, not a file share. Hope this helps. I have not done a SANergy install in 4 years, so things may have changed. disk / file pool on SAN without SANergy or GPFS?
Hello... we will be implementing an iSCSI SAN in the near future. The TSM server needs more disk storage pool space. I want to build new storage pools (FILE type, but perhaps also DISK type) on SAN storage. I don't need SANergy for this... correct? Some of the TSM clients that will reside on the SAN would benefit from LAN-free backups. All TSM clients and the TSM server are Windows 2003 / 2008, we have no other client platforms. Without using SANergy or GPFS, can I create a FILE type storage pool on SAN storage and define a shared FILE type library so that the TSM server and the TSM SAN storage agents can both write to the pool? Thanks... Ken
TSM 6.2 DB restore not working
I'm trying to restore a database backup to a new server. It's 6.2 on Windows 2008 64-bit, with an HP library and LTO3 drives. I cannot get the library to see the TSM device driver, and it shows up as Unknown Medium Changer. I tried deleting the devices and installing the driver, but it came back the same way. Any attempts to install it just return a message that it's at the most current level. Thing is, yesterday I was able to work around it. I was able to change devconf.out to make the library a manual one, and it would mount tapes. I had to do some other stuff that necessitated switching back to the old server and taking a new database backup, and when we came back up on the new server, the devconf.out was basically wiped, probably on reboot. Now, when I try to make the library a manual one, I'm getting an error message that the device parameter in the "define path" line is not valid for a 349x library. I have no clue why it's trying to make it that kind of library. I've tried a number of different configs, and I'm beating my head against a wall at this point. Original devconf.out (modified for privacy): /* Device Configuration */ DEFINE DEVCLASS LT03 DEVTYPE=LTO FORMAT=DRIVE MOUNTLIMIT=DRIVES MOUNTWAIT=60 MOUNTRETENTION=60 PREFIX=ADSM LIBRARY=owner-LT03 WORM=NO DRIVEENCRYPTION=ALLOW SET SERVERNAME name_SERVER1 SET SERVERPASSWORD 21461293e7e722dfc44b1113c588ad1240 DEFINE LIBRARY owner-LT03 LIBTYPE=SCSI WWN="4000" SERIAL="xx000M" SHARED=NO AUTOLABEL=NO RESETDRIVE=NO DEFINE DRIVE owner-LT03 TAPE0 ELEMENT=480 ONLINE=Yes WWN="4F22" SERIAL="xx74J9" DEFINE DRIVE owner-LT03 TAPE1 ELEMENT=481 ONLINE=Yes WWN="6812" SERIAL="xx74F1" /* LIBRARYINVENTORY bunch of tapes*/ DEFINE PATH name_SERVER1 owner-LT03 SRCTYPE=SERVER DESTTYPE=LIBRARY DEVICE=lb0.0.0.2 ONLINE=YES DEFINE PATH name_SERVER1 TAPE0 SRCTYPE=SERVER DESTTYPE=DRIVE LIBRARY=owner-LT03 DEVICE=mt0.1.0.2 ONLINE=YES DEFINE PATH name_SERVER1 TAPE1 SRCTYPE=SERVER DESTTYPE=DRIVE LIBRARY=owner-LT03 DEVICE=mt0.2.0.2 ONLINE=YES SERVERBACKUPNODEID 129 The logical device names did change, and I modified them accordingly in my new devconf.out, but it didn't help. I need to get this library visible in some way so that this database can be restored. I've been all over the internet, but my Windows skills are limited, so I might be missing something. TIA

Dsmserv.dsk for TSM 6.1
All, Can someone who has TSM 6.1 on Windows installed please post an example of what the contents of the dsmserv.dsk file look like? I have a server I have to show some folks, and it looks like TSM crashed. The dsmserv.dsk file was wiped. I've seen this before at earlier versions, and know how to recreate it there, but with the different database layout, I'm not sure how to recreate the entries at 6.1. I don't know that it matters, but it's 6.1.3.2 on Windows 2003. Thanks!

Hello after installation of tsm 6.1.2.0 client the tsm client won't start and in error.log the message appears ANS1832W The option 'fileleveltype' is no longer supported and will be ignored by TSM client in this release. This option will be removed in the next release and will no longer be valid. Please remove it from your option file. i have not found documentation about new options in this client release. where is it? thanks. with best regards stefan savoric
