Re: Automating the client install on a PC?

2003-01-22 Thread Tim Williams
You can use Wise or SMS installed to automate your install.
Every 6 months to a year we will upgrade and configure about 22,000 nt/2k
machines 100% automatically.
For new installs, you can even have the script self register to a TSM server
and add itself into a schedule.
There should be no reason why you can't just overwrite your current version
of code with 5.1.5.2 unattended and without reboot.

Subject: Automating the client install on a PC?

Hello,
I am trying to get the installation of TSM 5.1.5.2 to be totally
automated. THe silent install seems to be O.K. at putting all the files on
the PC. However, we are still trying to get to a point where a person does
not have to visit each PC to run through the CONFIGURATION process. Can
this be done? Is anyone doing it? How?
Second question:
If we have TSM client 5.1.0 on a PC and we want to upgrade it to 5.1.5.2
without having to visit the PC. If we do the uninstall and then the silent
install we are left with the above problem. Can we just install 5.1.5.2
over the top of 5.1.0 to keep the configuration information?

Title: TDP for Exchange Vs. Goner.scr

Hello fellow TSMers,
Due to the amount of deleted e-mails the last couple days we are experiencing some Exchange problems.
With the deletion of all of the viruses and when the backup executed it kicks off database zeroing.
The backups time out with a communications failure. We ran into this problem with the first version of the ADSMConnect Agent and Microsoft put out a fix. We have applied this fix, but are still getting the timeouts. We've also tried increasing all the time out values to no avail. Is anybody experiencing the same problem or have any TSM suggestions other than turn off database zeroing.

We are running NT 4.0 servers SP 6.0a, Exchange 5.5 SP4. We are using TDP for Exchange V 1.1.1.01. Our TSM servers are IBM 3466's running TSM V 4.1.

TDP for Domino problems with TSM server?

Title: TDP for Domino problems with TSM server?

I am having a unusual problem with a TDP client and TSM server.
Does anyone know of any problems with TDP for Domino and TSM servers below 4.1 ?

I am upgrading a NT client that has TSM 3.7.2.18 and the TDP for Domino.
After I upgrade the 3.7.2.18 version to 4.1.2.12 and kick off a TDP for domino backup of a database it crashes our TSM server.

I have tested this on TSM versions of 3.7.1, 3.7.2 3.7.4.
There are no error msgs in the activity log, just a connection comment.

04/13/2001 10:50:33 ANR1412W Volume 034202 access mode is unavailable.

04/13/2001 10:50:33 ANR1414W Volume 034264 access mode is read-only due to previous write error.

If I backup to a TSM 4.1 client there are no problems.

If I clean off the TDP for Domino client before upgrading the flatfile client, then install the TDP client I can backup to any version server.

Any hint/guess/comments/answer would be helpful

Last Aug/sep there was a discussion on the list of not being able to select any folders or root volume while doing a restore. You have to comment out the clusternode yes variable in your dsm.opt as a workaround. Has this problem been fixed and if yes what is the APAR/IC# and What versions are the fix applied into.

I'm currently running TSM 3.7.2.18 client

Hi Tim,

Actually I was referring only to the DST problem (IC28544), per the subject
and content of the original post to which I responded. IC28969 has nothing
to do with the DST problem; it is just another APAR fix that was included
in the 4.1.1.16 client. Although I was not involved in fixing that problem,
it is my understanding that it has been in the code for quite some time,
and in fact is not limited to just Windows. If you are fairly current on
your maintenance and are not experiencing the problem, then I wouldn't
worry about it; you're fine.

As far as DST goes, as long as you are one of the versions that fixes it
(listed in my first post on this subject, text included below), you do not
need to rush into installing new clients just for DST.

How to backup open files??

We are trying to backup a database file (not one that has an agent). The
database remains open at all times, but is not opened exclusive. We back
it up SHAREDSTATIC. We have noticed that we very rarely back this database
up and would probably not have a recent version if the user required a
restore.
It is not because the file changes during backup and Tivoli gives up after
retries. Tivoli does not even try to back the database up.

On investigation we have concluded that because the database is open all the
time its attributes don't get updated and hence Tivoli concludes that it
hasn't changed. Tivoli will only detect if the database has changed if the
application is closed or the system rebooted!

IF our assumption is correct then we are worried about how to back up such
files. We can't rely on the user telling us of their existence so how do we
spot them? If Tivoli isn't detecting that the file has changed then Open
File Managers won't help.

Are we correct in our assumptions and have any of you found a way around it?

Scenario is as per the sample bkup_stg_db scripts (called from KSH). I start
the korn shell script , which checks if a BKUP STGPOOL

What i want is 'some kind of exit in the reschedule label' that gets parsed
by ksh as 'not ok'. At the moment the KSH script picks this up as OK ,and
continues rest of script. (Move drm's and prepare). I'm loath to put all

  ERROR DESCRIPTION:
TSM client 3.7 and 4.1 ignore the subdir option.
  .
With the subdir option specified an incremental backup should
backup the symbolic links, directories and files they point to
  .
  Recreate this issue: dsmc i -su=yes */lien_adsm/**
..In this case nothing is being backed up including the link.

  LOCAL FIX:

  PROBLEM SUMMARY:

  * USERS AFFECTED: UNIX client *

  * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Command "dsmc inc" does not backup *
  * anything, if the last directory in the *
  * specified path is symbolic link, which *
  * points to mount point. *

  * RECOMMENDATION: Apply the fix when available *

  PROBLEM CONCLUSION:
One routine returned incorrect value in case of symbolic
pointing to mount point. Source code was modified to return
correct value. Now command like "dsmc inc /some_path/sym_link/*"
works fine even if directory, that symbolic link points to, is a
  mount point of a filesystem.

Re: unavailable or destroyed.

2000-11-08 Thread Tim Williams

AH HA...I have experienced the same thing. I chased this with support and so far
I've gotten a working as designed answer...
My gut... you have a tape drive that may appear to be online, but it it isn't!
Are you 3494 with 3590s? mtlib -l/dev/lmcp0 -qM (query mount...and compare this
with q mount in TSM)
If you have a tape mounted, then try a mtlib eject/demount mtlib -l/dev/lmcp0
-f/dev/rmtx -d (rmt for the 'invalid' mount).
Also a visual check may help...
check through your logs to see if you had a dismount failure (I think this was
the start to my 3 day demise).
Recycling my server cleared the problem.
I recreated the problem (messages below are only one flavor) by doing a rmdev -l
/dev/rmt0 AND TSM keeps this drive online.
even when it tries to access it and can't.
are you 3494shared yes???
If so, this is probably why development is saying it, so far, is working as
designed...
Call me if you like for further discussion

Raymond,
What is probably happening here is that you are backing up open databases.
So you are getting a number of retries, hence the extra data transmitted over
the network.
So you have at least a couple of options.
1) Make sure the databases are not open when you back them up.
2) Use a management class with a dynamic copy serialization, so it backs up
first time

NB. If you use option "2" you may get a fuzzy backup, so you will need to do
some testing to ensure that the backup is useable if taken when open
Hope this helps
John

Hi *sm,

We are running ADSM 3.1.2.57 on AIX on 4.3.2 Stk9710 library, dlt
drive.
We are in the process of migrating to *sm 3.7 Aix 4.3.3

Lotus Notes(R5) running on WinNT, scheduled to backup daily.
We are not using Notes agent.

The Notes backup has gradually been taking longer over the last few
months.
The scheduled backup continued into the afternoon.

What we notice is that the drive (say e$)has about 65 G capacity and is
ONLY half full.
It therefore should be backing up about 30G. But NO, it is backing up
about 60G.
This is the case for all our Lotus Notes Servers.
The Notes are using Tivoli 3.7 client version.

We are seeing 2 sessions going for each Notes node that are backing up
But we have checked that only one scheduler running per node. One session is
idle or sending
very little data. We are seeing only one session for other NT servers.
Also we see the following-
ANR2576W An attempt was made to update an event record for
a scheduled operation which has already been executed -
multiple client schedulers may be active for node
CBRNOTES03.

I have logged a call for Tivoli software support but any suggestions will
be gladly accepted and
much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

FYI- Add another apar to the 'credit' listargh...
Sum: TSM server on aix. TSM server level v3 r7 level 3.8
3494 with 12 3590 drives (which are in use most of the time).
*
Scenaio: needed to label libv with search=yes and volr=xx,yy and
overwrite=yes during tape drive activity...
This command won't even 'work' if there are no available drives.
Did issue command while there was, at the moment, an available drive or two and
the command started processing.
Between labeling tape '1' and tape '2' all drives became inuse (or unavailable).
This brought on TSM library sequence check(s).
An aix error for the lmcpd (6D errors)and failed the command 'mid-stream.'
APAR has been 'cut.'

erroneous ANR8355E message while verifying the internal

issue an ANR8302E or ANR8311E message.

  Apply PTF when available.

TSM better tracks error situations to avoid issuing erroneous
messages and to issue messages when there are errors.

Customer can issue AUDIT VOLUME with FIX=NO to determine if
there is any problem with the media and data.

I just upgraded my TSM Server 3.7.3 to 4.1.1 from the TSM FTP site. All went

not have any valid licenses. Server Utilities shows that my licenses are 3.7.3.

What do I need to do so that I can get this thing working? I do have a two year

Re: TSM Server 4.1.1

2000-09-14 Thread Tim Williams

Checked the TSM V4.1 CD readme.srvand nothing that I could find indicates
that you'll have to re-register licenses.
I dug in 'books' and found a step (quickstart book) (under:Migrating to Tivoli
Storage Manager Version 4.1
You can install Tivoli Storage Manager Version 4.1 over a previous version of
ADSM or TSM. This is called a "migrate install". :)

7.Your licenses from the previous version are no longer valid and must be
reregistered. See Registering Licenses.
  Note:
The tivoli.tsm.license package is required to register licenses. This
package is installed when you install the TSM server package.
I also saw this:
Note:
If you migrate from ADSM, your existing licenses are no longer valid. You
must update your license information.
(and TSM to TSM (ie 3.7 to 4.1??) (also in the quickstart, CD based doc).

to readme(s) or to read quickstart infonow have to check both??

Subject: Re: TSM Server 4.1.1

This should be fully documented in the README file.
The 4.1 server has a different licensing scheme than the 3.7 version of the
server.
The 3.7 licenses are not recognized by 4.1. You need to do the REGISTER LICENSE
commands on the 4.1 server.

The current architecture of the license manager is any new version will have
a different license scheme than the older versions of the server. The newer
version will not recognize the older licenses. My suggestion is to put all of
your
REGISTER LICENSE commands in a file. This way you can run that file
as a macro to re-regsister licenses as needed. You will also see something in
README file about performance and the size of your nodelock file if you are
running NT or AIX. Before you register the licenses I recommend you delete
your nodelock file to get rid of the old license strings that are no longer
valid. The server will eat up CPU cycles to decode those old license strings
that
it will just end up ignoring because they are for an older server version.
