Re: LTO drives

2003-11-21 Thread Viliam Varga
ibm lto2 drive can write data to ultrium1 media also, performance is very
good (40 mb/s, compresion on drive).

But, the LTO2 drives can read media that was written by LTO1.

Can anyone who has experience with these drives please help with a
question?
For those of us that use 3590 drives we know they are upgradeable from E to
H. Are LTO1 drives upgradeable to LTO2 or are they a completely different
animal?

Re: Shared mem with Solaris LAN-Free

2003-11-20 Thread Viliam Varga
rowan,

if you want to use shared memory as communication protocol on solaris, you
have to add to /etc/system:

set shmsys:shminfo_shmmax=268435456

but lan free client does not work with shared memory protocol, according to
readme file (tsm client 5.2.0):

- On Solaris, the only supported LANFREECommmethod is TCPip (Loopback).

in my environment (sf 3800, lto2, server and storage agent - 5.1.6.2,
client - 5.2.0) lan free with tcp/ip is slower than 1 gbit lan. :-(

All,

I keep getting the error when trying to run the sharedmem commethod on the
TSM Storage Agent on my Sun Solaris server.

ANR9600E Failed to allocate memory for shared memory communications. Error:
EINVAL.
ANR8289W Shared Memory driver is terminating due to error in creating a new
thread.

Anyone got any ideas on how to resolve this? The server has got 8GB of RAM!

Re: Non-IBM LTO tapes in a 3584

2003-09-11 Thread Viliam Varga
hi, mark,

within 1 year we use 100 imation and 500 fujifilm ultrium1 tapes in ibm lto
drives. approximately 10% of imation tapes we had to return to distributor,
because of unloading problems. only 2 fujifilm tapes had serious errors.
ibm recomends fujifilm (some months ago maxell too) as alternative brands
to ibm ultrium tapes, you can check it on
ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/pc_servers_pdf/tapemedialist.pdf.

All,

We're looking at purchasing extra LTO-1 tapes to go in our 3584. To date,
we've been running IBM tapes but we've gotten cheaper prices on HP and
Imation tapes. Both HP and Imation are priced about 30% less than the IBM
tapes.

But I'm wondering if there are any quality issues with either of these
brands. Also, I'm wondering if running non-IBM tapes in a 3584 might raise
any issues.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Mark

L700 - DLT7000 drive errors

2001-02-07 Thread Viliam Varga

Hi all,
our customer has a problem with TSM server and library SUN L700 (oemed STK
L700) with four DLT7000 drives - he can use only three drives in this
library. All four drives are defined on TSM server. One of them, does not
matter which one, must be manualy changed to status online=no. If four
drives are online, TSM server generate lot of error messages on drives -
write errors, read errors, locate errors, flush errors (approximately ten
messages per hour).
Does anybody have similar problem or environment?

TSM 4.1.2, SUN Solaris, StorEdge L20

2001-01-15 Thread Viliam Varga

Hi all,

can anybody help me with following problem:
TSM device driver (lb) cannot identify library contrloler on tape library
SUN StorEdge L20 (2 drives, 20 tapes). TSM tape device driver (mt) works
fine on both DLT 7000 drives. Veritas NetBackup BusinesServer 3.3 software
installed on the same machine uses library robot and drives without
failures.

CONFIGURATION:
Hardware:
SUN Ultra5, 256MB RAM, 16GB HDD
SUN StorEdge L20, 2x DLT7000

Software:
Solaris 2.7, 64bit
TSM server 4.1.2

Thank you.

ADSM 2 to TSM 4.1 migration

2000-10-19 Thread Viliam Varga

Hi,

we are going to migrate old ADSM v.2 server (AIX) to TSM 4.1 (AIX). May I
use "dsmserv upgrade db" command, or I have to use "export/import server"?
Does anybody have any experiences with migrating from version 2 to version
4?
Thanks.

Sun StorEdge L20 support

2000-10-02 Thread Viliam Varga

Hi,
does anybody have experiences with TSM 3.7 or 4.1 server (any platform) and
Sun StorEdge L20 library? L20 is not included in device support lists, but
it looks like supported HP SureStore 2/20, excepting drive technology - DLT
7000 vs DLT 8000. Does anybody know, if there are any other differences
between these libraries? From Tivoli TechLine Support we received
unsatisfactory answer.
And what about StorEdge L400 (Exabyte 220) :-) ?

Thanks.

Hi,

does anybody have experiences with ODBC in version 4.1? It looks VERY slow.
It's normal, if table with 500 rows (summary) opens about 20 minutes?
Thanks for response.

SAN and Tape Drives

2000-08-17 Thread Viliam Varga

Hi,

we want to implement a small SAN (2 TSM servers on Sun Solaris, 1 Disk
Array, 1 Tape Library), and we have a problem with HBA QLogic QLA2200. Tape
support option on QLA2200 is enabled, but from Solaris I see only disks
and I can't see tape drives.
What is wrong? Does anybody have similar problem?
Many thanks for any help.

SAN Lan Freee Backup

2000-08-10 Thread Viliam Varga

Hi,

Tivoli Storage Manager: Managed system for SAN Storage Agent User's Guide
(v4r1) says:

"Lan free data movement shifts the movement of TSM client data from the
communications network to a storage area network (SAN). The SAN provides a
path that lets Tivoli Storage Manager back up and restore client data
directly to and from SAN attached storage. This storage on the SAN is
managed by the TSM server and shared between the server and client."

Is it possible to do this with TSM server version 3.7? If yes, how can I
do this?
Thanks.
