You cannot backup those DBs since they are locked by SYSTEM on NT.

Instead you must backup the backup copy of them (usually in the
system32/wins/backup folder as for WINS). You'll have to setup WINS
to make an automatic backup of its DB in WINS manager. Remember
you MUST backup WINS DB manually once for the automated process to
take place.

See http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q235/6/09.ASP
for more info on backing up restoring WINS DB.

DHCP, if I remember, is saved periodically and all you have to do is
backup the backup copy of the DB in system32/dhcp/backup.

You also can make a copy of the DHCP registry setup information in
a REG file for backup. The key is located in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\DHCPServer\Configur
ation.

See http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q130/6/42.asp
for other details on moving DHCP DB. Contains usefull information
on how to back it up completely.

See http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q145/8/81.ASP
for more info hints on DHCP WINS.

Hope this helps.

If you set serilization to shared static, TSM will try X number of
retries
to check if the file is closed, if
it remains in open state (this propably will be your case), TSM skips
these
files. You should set
serilization to shared dynamic to be able to backup open files, but use
it
with care...

 Hello there

Does anyone know if TSM 3.7+ can backup the open WINs and DHCP
databases.
Using
Legato currently and Legato skips these files.
Planning to set the parameter to shared static under TSM for the
backup of
open
 files

Re: How to Restore crashed Nt /AIX server.?

2000-07-25 Thread Vincent CADET

I've gone through a bare-metal-restore of an NT server.
I've had to restore it from a separate partition, without
the need of a repair disk (that's the goal).

You may follow the instructions in that red book:
"SG24-2231-00 Windows NT Backup and Recovery with ADSM"

Everything is clear and that's the one I used to restore
the system. Note that TSM client GUI (if you happen to
use it) cannot restore all NT system objects (registry,
eent log, Active Directory, COM+, aso) at one time although
it gives no error. You'll have to select on object type at
a time.

Also note it is safer to make a copy of the C:\BOOT.INI
AFTER you have installed an NT system on the repair
partition. In cases the boot disk is the same for both the
restored and the repair systems, this allows you to boot
the repair system from a diskette if the restored one
crashes. Create an NT boot diskette by formatting it under
NT and copying the NTDETECT, NTLDR and (optionnally) the
NTBOTTDD (.SYS) files on that diskette.

Take a look at www.redbooks.ibm.com for AIX.

Best regards,
Vince

Objet : How to Restore crashed Nt /AIX server.?

Hi all
I am using TSM3.7 .2 on AIX 4.3.3. installed on H-70.
my client includes , SUN , AIX servers, NEtware servers, HP servers, and
finally NT servrs.
now i am usharing IBM SHARK 2105 unit as a comman storage unit for all.
i have
configured same setup for disaster rrecovery purpose .
now i am having NT server (compaq ), with internal raid5 array, and
allocated
30gig for testing purpose from SHARK.
the task i want to perform is ,to show my manager , that TSM can restore
a
crashed server. and database also.
and then they will decide weather to go for veritas or TSM . as we are
in
process to buy another TSM server, and configure it as a stanalone
server.
now how do you restore the crashed NT srever.
the steps i know are:
1. Install NT from cd .(while installing insert REPAIR DISK so that it
can
restore registry)
2. install client code .
3. connect TSM server, and using web based client
http:///hostname:1581
say backup choose files and restore.
is that correct or any other procedure is there?

I am doing same thing with AIX , restoring from ' mksysb ' and install
client
code connect and restore .

but have anybody gone thorough these procedures? does it work?

pls. let me know.

Re: TRying to read ACTLOG

2000-07-25 Thread Vincent CADET

Michel,

There is a way indeed using ODBC. But, as far as I'm
concerned I've not succeeded in opening any table in
TSM with a silent login (i.e. passing UID and PWD
directly to the driver). I get a "Catastrophic failure"
and I don't know why. I've submitted that problem to
Tivoli so far. I get no error if I accept the logon
dialog.

However if you don't mind being prompted for those
information, it is a way to check the activity log by
sending the query "SELECT * FROM ACTLOG" (assuming
you have linked ACTLOG to an MS Access DB).

Regards,
Vince

possibility e.g. with ODBC ?

Thank you

Re: Exclude does not work

2000-07-24 Thread Vincent CADET

Did you check the results are as expected with the
GUI ?

You didn't include any MGMT class in your sample.
Did you (and skipped it in your sample) or is it
on purpose ?

What version of TSM client/server do you use ?

I personnally already got into such a trap. But it
worked normally as I restarted the client scheduler.
Meanwhile I made sure the correct OPT file was
given to the scheduler service. The file path can
be checked in the registry
(HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\ADSM Client Scheduler)
The file name should be written in the "Parameters"
subkey.

Hope this helps,
Vince

A Windows NT client does backup files (*.DAT) though they are excluded
