TSM on Linux for zSeries w/ 3494

2003-10-27 Thread Patrick Wagner
Hi all

I apologize if this question has been asked already.
I have installed SuSE SLES 8 and TSM Server 5.2 on a MP3K H30 with a 3494
Library attached. Next Step is to define the 3494 Library to TSM.

The only way (as far as I found out) to connect the Library is via TCP/IP or
a serial (tty) device. But the drives in the 3494 are ESCON attached.

Has anyone done this already, and is there another way to this without a
TCP/IP connection from Linux/390 to the 3494?

Thanks in advance for helping me in this issue.

With kind regards - Mit freundlichen Gruessen

Schedule not working

2003-07-01 Thread Wagner
Hello,

I have a schedule that was working fine and a few days ago i get the same
result: failed.

In the event viewer of the node i see the following error:

The library file dsmcperf.dll specified for the TSM Client Performance

available. Status code is data DWORD 0.

Does anybody know how to fix it?

Backup ideas

2003-03-21 Thread Wagner
Hello,

I've got TSM 4.1.5 running and an Autoloader Sony AIT-2.

The autoloader always loses connection with the server... sometimes i reboot
the machine and it finds a new hardware...

So now i'm using only the disk.

I created a 50.000MB disk storage pool and it is now working fine...

All the schedules are ok... and now i've got 34% of utilization of the
disk...

There is only one schedule that is not runing... it is a domino backup with
almost 60.000MB of data... i think the disk will not support this data even
with compression... maybe i can increase the disk up to 60.000MB... i still
got 17.000MB of free space on the disk...

Now, i've configured the autoloader again but don't know when it'll crash
again...

Does anybody have any idea to include the domino schedule??

Maybe if i move the data from the disk to the tapes and then do the
schedules, but i don't know if it is possible...

Thanks in advance,
Wagner Garcia Campagner.

Wagner,

The Domino server has a hold on this database. It is not
allowing Data Protection for Domino to open it.
Try opening it with a Notes Client to see if you get the same error.
If that doesn't help, try rebooting your Domino Server.
If that doesn't clear it, call Lotus support.

Thanks,

TSM and backint success stories

2001-06-27 Thread Kevin Wagner

Has anyone had any success backing up SAP R3 online tablespaces to a TSM
server using backint versus Data Protection?
I haven't seen definitive answers as to whether backint will still work
(i.e.a supported configuration). I'd hate to think that TDP for SAP is the
only way to run online backups of an SAP ORACLE database.
We are going to upgrade (finally) from ADSM Server 3.1.20 to TSM 4.1, and
we'd like to keep our backint product, especially given the hefty price tag
of the TDP option.

I'd appreciate any success stories that anyone knows about. I searched
the archives, but didn't see anything recent there.

 Thanks.

Re: MSCS and firewalls

2001-04-06 Thread Reinhold Wagner

Joel,

we backup 3 Windows boxes through a firewall but no MSCS.

What we did is start a backup (manually or scheduled) and check at the firewall
which packets were dropped. This way we found which ports needed to be accepted. We
needed several test runs until we found all affected ports.

Joel Cooper schrieb:

I have a situation that I'm having a problem with. I wanted to see if anyone
knows the quick answer. This message is long, so thanks to anyone that reads it
and even more to anyone that has an idea.

First, ADSM didn't used to be supported through a firewall even though it would
work in many situations. I don't know in this day and age if that non-support is
still official. If it is, I really feel it needs to be changed because in this
age of the Internet, I am having web server TSM clients added like you wouldn't
believe. If the problem is the client opening up additional ports and not being
able to predict the random port it will use, why not have an option file setting
to set valid ports for the client to try? Even if Tivoli won't "support
firewalls", at least give us some functionality where we can do our jobs. I've
got a few million dollars worth of servers outside firewalls and they haven't
quit ordering them. So far, we've been backing up about 2 or 3 dozen b/a clients
and a few SQL agents for awhile through a firewall.

To accomplish this, we've been having our Security department implement firewall
rules that allow bi-directional TCP/IP traffic on 1500 and 1501. No problems.

My situation is this: I just setup 2 Windows 2000 based cluster server (MSCS)
outside a firewall, one for SQL 7.0 and one for Exchange 2000. According to TSM
v4 instructions, I need a client for the Windows nodes that could run the
cluster and I need a client for each cluster group, in my case a group for the
quorum and a group for Exchange 2000. With Exchange 2000, I also need the TDP
 for Exchange v2.

I have these clients all installed and they all work manually. My problem is
with the scheduler service. The first service to run on 1500 works; the
subsequent services never answer the server. According to the error logs, they
found the TCP/IP port busy and picked another at random. It appears they picked
 56582 and then 56583, etc.

I made each service work on 1500 by itself, but I need them to run together. I
thought the answer was in TCPPort in dsm.opt. I got them to open ports 1500 -
1505 and put each client on its own port. The firewall part works, showing a
session going through w/o a problem. I am getting ANS1017 Session rejected:
TCP/IP connection failure, though. I am not sure why. I'm not getting activity
log errors for this on my last test.

Does anyone have any ideas? Is this because my server has the option to be
contacted on TCPPort 1500? I don't want to use the Windows scheduler to handle
this, but I have to cover these servers.

I don't see what a support call will accomplish yet, but if I get a little more
information I'm willing to try to get some answers.

 Thanks in advance,

 Joel Cooper

Re: Long Term Archive for Databases

2001-04-05 Thread Reinhold Wagner

Jim,

we have this discussion nearly every year. We all know that we need not only the
backup of the database, but also the appropriate DBM version plus Operating
system, hardware and application software. We have to keep our inventory data
for 15 years! I have more than 10 years old half inch tape reels from our
mainframe time. Today i don't have any mainframe, not any version of the
operating system or application software and i dont't know anybody who would be
able to read a 1/2 inch tape reel! And - more important - there is nobody in our
company who knows the data and would be able to work with them!

Our solution is to migrate the data to an optical archive. So the supplier of
the archive is responsible that the data can be read and interpreted for such a
long time. Despite that we are forced to keep 1 backup of our SAP database per
year. Nonsense. But we do it and hope that noone would ever need it!

regards

Reinhold

Re: ATTN: All Windows 4.1.2 Client Users

2001-03-01 Thread Reinhold Wagner

Andy,

that's really good news.

But we have another problem with 4.1.2:

We have TSM Server 4.1.2 on AIX 4.3.3 and are having lots of problems on a
Solaris client
4.1.2 on Solaris 7.

We upgraded our TSM server at 2000/02/08 from 3.1.2.40 to 4.1.2.0. At this time
the Solaris
box with client 4.1.1 wasn't able to backup any more (core dump). We upgraded
the client
to 4.1.2 and had the problem with national (and special) characters.

This server is a NFS file server for more than 40 engineers (Catia) with over
130.000 files.

Since most of our catia files have special characters in it's name we don't have
backups
of the engineers work for more than 2 weeks now!!!

If we can expect a solution for Windows 4.1.2 - is this true for Solaris (or
other UNIX flavours)
also?

The developers are working on the problem with high priority (what else!).
Untill an

We will do it if we can (4.1.1 ends with a core dump on our solaris 2.7 box!).

ANS1304W on 4.1

2001-02-23 Thread Reinhold Wagner

Folks,

i searched the archives and found several threads about ANS1304W, but non of

related to Version 4.

We migrated a week ago from 3.1 to 4.1.2 and now see _ANS1304W Active object not

client's error log. In the archives i learned that it's a problem with national
language
characters and this could be true in this case also.

Our Environment:

Server: TSM 4.1.2.0, AIX 4.3.3
Client: TSM 4.1.2.0, Solaris 7

'couse it's 18:29 here and we don't have a support contract which covers this

thanks for the quick answer.

Andy's message is related to Windows. Our client 4.1 is installed on a Solaris
machine. On
a UNIX machine the filenames are case sensitive and so there's no need to
convert
file names to all upper case.

How comes, that we have ANS1304 on a UNIX box?

Steve,

this is our environment:

ADSM Server:

ADSM 3.1.2.40

Network:

Nortel Network switches

Client:

Siemens NT box, 3 CPU's 400 MHz, 3 GB, Gigabit adapter
Oracle 8.0.5 - 113 GB

Backup Hardware:

3494, 4 x 3590E1A (2 drives used for this backup), J tapes

The online backup of this database lasts 1 h 10 m.

Something seems to be wrong with your environment, but it may be difficult to
find out what it is.

From time to time we restore the last offline backup of this database to another
NT machine. This box does not have
a gigabit adapter, so we would expect a restore time of round about 10 hrs (or
20 hrs if you take into account that
write operations are much slower than reads to a RAID 5 set). But this restore
lasts nearly a week! Well, we are
about to replace this box so we are not willing to find the reason.

Thema:Re: tape drive needs cleaning

We have an ibm h70 running aix 4.3.3 and TSM 3.7.3. It s hooked up to an ibm
3494 with two magstar 3590 drives. A month ago we saw some tape drive needs
cleaning messages in the aix error report. They repeated today..

IDENTIFIER TIMESTAMP T C RESOURCE_NAME DESCRIPTION
E507DCF9 1210101500 I H rmt1 TAPE DRIVE NEEDS CLEANING
D1A1AE6F 1210101500 I H rmt1 TAPE SIM/MIM RECORD

I m wondering if this is normal? To my knowledge the 3494 should be cleaning
itself as it does have cleaning tapes and is all configured to do so
automatically.

We all need cleaning every once in a while, which we perform by schedule and
by special need. In the 3494 "Clean Schedule" you can define the interval for
cleaning; but in any case the drive will call for cleaning when it needs it.
Redbook "IBM Magstar Tape Products Family: A Practical Guide" (SG24-4632)
section 10.11.1 recommends forcing the 3494 schedule to ineffectuality so that
only drive-request cleaning prevails.

Re: NIC Question

Terry,

you can try to set explicit routes (route add ...) for every client. But i think
it would be better
to use different networks on every nic and giving the clients TCP alias
addresses .

Re: 700 GB OPS Data Warehouse

2000-10-27 Thread Reinhold Wagner

Sean,

we don't have a 700 GB DB but maybe my figures may help you:

- 100 GB Oracle on NT (SP5), Gigabit-Adapter
- ADSM-Server AIX 4.3.3, Gigabit
- 2 3590-E drives (14 MB/s each)

we backup this database in little more than 1 hour.

I assume it's a question of tape drive speed.

That's why we run ADSM on AIX instead of NT: so we don't need periodically
recycle the machine.

Re: Autoresponders

If I am on vacation i set all my subscribed mailing lists to NOMAIL. It's quite
easy. I stored all SET NOMAIL and SET MAIL emails in my _sent box_ and i resend
them as i need. So it's not necessary to configure my email client and the
problem of autoresponding to mailing lists is solved within seconds.

Re: Cannot make File/Directory

2000-10-11 Thread Reinhold Wagner

Robert,

our users are told not to creat files or directories with blanks or special
characters. I think your problem
is caused by blanks in the directory name. Try to rename the directory without
blanks and run the backup
again.

I assume that ammount of data to be backed up differs the same way as backup
