TSM client backup/restore using WEB, using TSM to do AFS backup/restore

2004-08-18 Thread Yahya Ilyas
Is it possible to do TSM client backup or restore using WEB?

We use AFS (Andrew File System) and I am planning to do user data backups using TSM
(50,000+ users). I am also looking for a way to allow our users to do restores
themselves. If it is not possible to use web for client restores, what other way can
users do restores if they don't have to log in to TSM client.

We have 8 AFS servers, and currently we do AFS volume backup on TSM, using virtual
mount points from one of the clients.
TSM server is 5.2.

Thanks

Getting list of files which will backup without doing inc backup

2003-04-03 Thread Yahya Ilyas
If I run a backup yesterday and today there are files which were updated or
changed and are not backed up yet. Is there a way to compare files from
last backup and files currently on the server which are not backup yet?

If I understand it correctly, before incremental backup starts TSM server
sends list of all Active files to client, then client checks which files
need to be backed up and send them to TSM server for backup. Is there a
way to get this listing without actually running incremental backup?

Thanks for your help.

TSM Server upgrade

2003-02-26 Thread Yahya Ilyas
I will appreciate if any one can share his/her experience and advice on TSM
server upgrade from version 4 to version 5.

I am planning to upgrade TSM server from V. 4 R 1 to TSM Server 5.1 on AIX
4.3.3.
Last time when I upgraded TSM server from V3 to V4 I did following:
exported admin, node, policy, server information's
saved volumehistoryfile, deviceconfigfile, dsmserv.opt and
dsmserv.dsk files
After upgrade I imported admin, node, policy and server. Also copied these
saved files back to TSM server directory.

For upgrade to Version 5, do I need to do all these steps and are there any
other things I should take care of.
I will greatly if you can send me detailed information of this upgrade.
Thanks
Yahya

Monthly backup

2002-10-14 Thread Yahya Ilyas

On one of TSM client I am using two management classes/ copy groups. In
include_exclude file I have added new management class name in front of the
file system's name and the rest of includes use default management class.
Default management group has vere, verd, rete and reto parameters set to 35
days, and that one file system has different management with 365 for all of
these options so I can keep data for one year.

Now I need to change backup for this filesystem to become daily with default
management class for 35 days, and do monthly backups to keep for one year.
I will appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks

Copygroup settings for Incremental and full backups

2002-06-18 Thread Yahya Ilyas

Is it possible to setup one filesystem of a node to keep backup for 365 days
and other filesystems' backups of that node to 35 days?

currently I have setup copygroup parameters of all domains to 35
(verexists, verdeleted, retextra, retonly) for all incremental and full
backups. Now on one ADSM client machine I need to have daily incremental
backups and keep it for 35 days, and on one of the filesystems of that node,
a full backup after every 30 days and keep that backup for 12 months.

I want to keep that full backup of that one filesystem for 12 months, and
backups of all other filesystems of that node to 35 versions and days.

I defined a separate domain, policy, mgmtclass, copygroup etc. and
transferred that node to this new domain. Defined an incremental schedule
and a Selective backup for the filesystem for monthly full backup. But now
in this setting if I set VEREXISTS, VERDELETED, VEREXTRA, RETONLY of
copygroup to 365, it will keep all of the filesystems of that node to 365
days. Is it possible of what I want to do with these backups?
Thanks

Restore OS of AIX 4.3.3

2002-03-16 Thread Yahya Ilyas

Recently we lost both mirror disks on one of the RS6000, AIX4.3.3 system. I
installed base OS, and TSM client and than restored selected files on the
new system. How can I restore complete OS?

We have TSM server level 4.1.4.

I have done complete restore of an HP system by installing base OS on first
disk than installing OS on second disk. Than I rebooted from first disk,
mounted second disk and restored OS on second disk, after restore was
complete I rebooted from second disk. Will this same procedure work on AIX
platform. I am told that on AIX platform after restoring OS on different
hdisk system will not boot.

Thanks

size of individual database/log files for TSM

2002-02-07 Thread Yahya Ilyas

Hi
We are using TSM server Version 4, Release 1, Level 3.0 on AIX 4.3.3
I added another 35 GB disk to the server, and want to increase database and
log size for TSM by defining new dbv and logv volumes. Currently all the
.dsm files for database and log are 2 GB each. I wanted to know if I should
create files larger than 2 GB, is there a size limit to these files? Also
having 12 - 15 files of 2 GB each is better or fewer larger size files for
database and log.
Thanks

If tape in SCSI library gets damaged

2001-10-23 Thread Yahya Ilyas

I recently had to restore a file from one node to another, but the tape for
source node had some problems. Restore was very slow and TSM issued
messages that it could not read files, so restore did not work. I tried to
run audit on that volume/tape, TSM deleted some damaged files but it was
very slow. After few hours I canceled audit process and tried to move files
to a different tape, but it did not work either.

Finally I deleted data on that tape and checkout that tape. TSM still
showed filesystems for that node, I deleted filesystems also and did backup
again for that node.

I wanted to know in this situation what else could I do or how can I prevent
such things in future. If tape goes bad than what are my options?
We use STK9710 tape library and DLT4 tapes, library has total of 500 tapes
and almost half of them are scratch. TSM server is version4, release 1,
level 3.0 on AIX.

Thanks

TSM backup of MS Exchange

2001-08-29 Thread Yahya Ilyas

I do MS Exchange backup using TSM's TDP for MS Exchange. On TSM admin
command line when I issue "query filesp nodename f=d" it gives me following
output.

Capacity (MB): 0.0
 PCT Util: 0.0

Is this correct? Or it is not doing any backup? On all other UNIX and
Windows clients these two have numbers related to filesystem size.

Thanks

Restore MS Exchange data to a different machine

2001-08-29 Thread Yahya Ilyas

Is it possible to move MS Exchange data from one Exchange server to another?

I want to try to restore Exchange data to another server same way it works
with other TSM clients, by giving access from source node to target node and
than by starting client on target node using
-virtualnodename=sourceNodeName.

I have checked TSM's Exchange Restore Help, and it has information about
moving data to another server if original server is not available and by
naming new server same as original and than restoring data to new server. I
want to know if it is possible to restore data to a different machine while
original one is still up and running.

Thanks

MS Exchange related question

2001-06-28 Thread Yahya Ilyas

I have installed TSM module for MS Exchange and Windows client on WinNT
machine. When I issue command query node for Exchange node it shows platform
as WinNT, same as it shows for WinNT client.

Some time ago I installed MS Exchange module on a Win2000 machine and query
node command shows me platform as TDP MSExchg NT. Is this the difference
because of different windows platforms or did I not install MS Exchange
properly on WinNT machines.

Thanks

a scheduled backup starts depending upon what time the
backup schedule on the TSM server is defined. If
you're using sched mode prompted and the schedule for
example is defined as a weekd (weekday) schedule @
05:00 then the TSM server will prompt the client to
being a backup @ 05:00 Mon-Fri. as long as the
scheduler daemon is active on the client. The
schedlog only details the activities and events that
take place in reference to the scheduler and backup
and archive processes.

Moving TSM server to a different machine

I need to move TSM server to a different AIX machine. Other than
dsmserv.opt, dsmserv.dsk and nodelock files what other files I will need to

We use raid set for database and log files and tape library for storage.
Will I need to redefine domain, mgmtclass, copygroup, stgpool etc. on new
TSM server or is this information is saved in database?

Yahya,

Make sure the scheduler service is running under
an account on the machine that has proper access
for doing Exchange backup and restores.

Under the Services applet, Properties, for the
Exchange Scheduler service that you created...
...the "Log on as:" of "Local System account"
will NOT work.

Change the "Log on as" parameter to match the
account that you were successful in manually running
the backup (excincr.cmd) from.
