I have a bunch of questions regarding tape drive performance and backup software. We
are planning to evaluate Tivoli Storage Manager and Veritas Netbackup. The decision
as to which one is going to be purchased is out of my hands. I am however responsible
for determining what tape hardware to purchase. I am somewhat familiar with Tivoli
Storage Manager, but do not have any experience with Veritas.
My first question is how does TSM and Veritas compare regarding tape usage. With TSM
and its file level based granularity, it seems like the tape locate speeds would be
one of the most important considerations. The way I see it if you only have fast
streaming performance, then sure your migrations and backups will be fast, but
reclamation and file system recovery with the active versions of data spread across a
tape will have poor performance. Is this accurate?
Does Veritas ever run into similar situations during entire file system recovery?
Does Veritas have anything like reclamation?
Are there any reports that compare the various tape drives in 'real world' situations?
When you buy/evaulate new tape hardware for use with Tivoli Storage Manager, how do
you determine the performance in a sandbox environment that would allow you to
determine how well it will do once it is put into production?
I have the same question as above regarding a Veritas Netbackup environment.
And finally if there are no reports of 'real world' situations comparing the various
tape drives, what types of sitations would you like to see (In case anyone is
monitoring the listserv who can do something about this lack of information).
