Re: TDP Domino restores with private folders
Yep, but probably not how you'd like. As private folders are part of the database, you need to restore the whole database to get to the private folders. This may or may not be what you are expecting... as you then need to transfer the private folders from the restored DB to another DB. /gjs - Original Message - From: Marc Lowers [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, April 15, 2002 11:07 PM Subject: TDP Domino restores with private folders Does TDP for Domino restore private folders created in Notes? MMC
Where can I find the Windows MMC plug-ins for TSM? Can I use it to manage our TSM Server on OS/390? Thanks /gjs
Id there a Retry delay setting?
Once a every mow and again (every 4 - 6 weeks), I have a couple of backups that happen while the application may still be using the data and they fail (can not even open the file for reading - so I can't use the SHAREDYNAMIC option), which I agree with. But if I could get TSM to retry in 5 minutes or at the end of the backup job, then there is a very high chance the application has released the file and it can be backed up safely. The current retry seems to try the 5 times I have asked it to in less than a second, which doesn't really give the application time to finish and close the file. Does TSM have a retry later option (short of running the backup job again)? ARCServeIT does and I did like it... /gjs
Re: Exclude SYSTEM_OBJECT redux
Hey Andrew, how about we all put our request in this forum and you consolidate them to your management? I think my voice has a bit more of chance to be heard via this path then making a request to my IBM Partner account rep. So I vote we have the option to NOT backup SYSTEMOBJECTS (the *.exe's, *.dll's, etc...) on the W2K platform. I have contacted Tivoli support and know that my only option currently is to use the DOMAIN statement in the dsm.opt file to control this. Therefore I come to the community and ask what (if any) requests have you made of the developers for design changes concerning this topic. I know some developers frequent this list, and if any of them care to comment on this, I would love to have your input. I plan on talking with Tivoli Marketing soon, asking for a design change to incorporate a feature that will allow me to exclude the SYSTEM_OBJECT; so maybe something like an option called EXCLUDE.SYSTEMOBJECT. It is my opinion that this should be an option that could be set from a server client option set, so that each client dsm.opt file doesn't need to be modified. This is a problem in my environment, as I have over 10,000 clients total, and it's difficult to make changes that require user action. When I spoke with Tivoli support about my problem, he mentioned that when designing the capability to backup the system files, they were required to take an 'all or nothing' approach. While this seems to be true, they make it quite difficult for the user to choose the 'nothing' route, much different from the philosophy TSM normally espouses. OK, thanks for listening. I look forward to your comments. -Matt
Fw: How does client open files for backup?
I asked this question last week, but no responses... I thougt I'd try again... :-) /gjs - Original Message - From: mrkirra2001 [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, February 26, 2002 8:52 AM Subject: How does client open files for backup? How do I omitt files from being backed up for one time only?
I want to run a backup of all of a hard drive, but leave out a specific subdirectory for later backing up, as that directory has files currently changing and I'll back them up later. If I use EXCLUDE, then that means the directory will NEVER be backed up, where as I do want to back up the files at some point. Thanks /gjs
W2K and the System Objects
How do I stop the system objects (specifically the *.EXE's, *.DLL's, etc in the WINNT directory structure...) from being backed up EVERY time I do a backup on a W2K machine? These system objects are over 120MB in size and is taking up bandwidth, disk and tape space unnecessarily as they do not change that frequently. I'd be happy to back them up once a week, or ideally, when they change, as TSM was (classically) designed to do... Thanks /gjs
StorageTek L20
Is anybody using the StorageTek L20 (with LTO drives/tapes) tape library system with TSM (on NT)? Link = http://www.storagetek.com/products/tape/L20/ If so, what is your experience?
Client licensing
We are thinking about using TSM to backup our clients and have been told that it will cost over AU$550 per client (about US$280). This seems extreme, as it would be much cheaper to purchase a personal backup system (Tape/CD-RW/Zip/etc) for our 700 machines than pay the price of a server and it's hardware and the server tape system and the tapes. Are there any other options for licensing? For example, a charge per month per machine? How have other companies handled this? And yes, I do understand that personal backup isn't as good as a corporate backup, which is why we are investigating TSM. I just don't like the price we have been quoted. Regards
Web Registered Users?
How do I become a Registered User and get a userid and password to access the restricted areas of Tivoli's web site?
How do I see when a file will be deleted from the server?
How can I see when a file that has been backed and subsequently deleted (on the client) when it will be removed from the server? I know the RETONLY parameter says to keep it the number of days, so I can make a guess at when it was deleted and then add on the number of days in the RETONLY parameter, but this is a GUESS, especially for files that may have been deleted a number of weeks ago. So, is there a way to find out the EXACT date a file will be removed from the server once it has been deleted? Thanks for any help. /gjs
Error 137 from Signon Authentication
Error 137 from Signon Authentication [in DSIERROR.LOG] I am getting this on two NT 4.0 + SP5 clients that have TSM client v4.2 installed on them. It is happening when the TSM CLIENT SCHEDULER service is started and has about 6 entries each time it is started. All backups, whether manual or scheduled work OK. Is this something I should be concerned about? If so, what is it and how do I fix it? Regards /gjs
How do I do this with TSM for Domino?
I am using TSM for Domino v1.1.1 on NT going to an OS/390 TSM Server v4.1.3. I would like to backup all our MAIL\ files each Saturday and then on Sunday backup all the OTHER directories in the Domino data directory. On Sunday I don't want to back up the MAIL\ directory again. Anybody got any suggestions? Here is an example of the directory structure... E:\NOTES.DTA --\GLOBAL --\LOCAL --\MAIL --\MORE1 --\MORE2 --\MORE3 --\MORE30 So, I want to do E:\NOTES.DTA\MAIL on Saturday, and all the other directories, except \MAIL, on Sunday. I'd prefer not to hard code each of the directories for the Sunday backup as this does not allow for expansion, without changing the batch file. I can't use two different .OPT files, one with the \MAIL directory excluded, as this will expire all the previous versions of \MAIL files [won't it?]. Over to you guys... /gjs
Full System Restore for Windows NT
Does anybody have any procedures and/or hints on doing a full disk restore for an NT 4 machine? For example, if I have a disk crash, how do I get the machine back up and going in as little amount of time as possible? Server = v4.1.3 Client = v4.2.0 Thanks /gjs
Locked or Open Files uner NT
How do I back up locked files under Windows NT? Specifically the c:\winnt\system32\config directory, which contains the SAM database and other important NT system files. I have set the management class to DYNAMIC, but this still does not back them up. The error says the file is being used by another process. I am using clinet 4.2 with a OS/390 server v4.1.3 Thanks for any help /gjs
SUBFILE Techonical Details?
Is there anywhere that I can find the technical details on how SUBFILE works? For example.. - what does it use the local cache for? - if I have 20GB of backup data, how does it use the 10MB cache area? - what if I delete the local cache? - does TSM always backup the differences, or is it smart enough to say this difference file is 50% (for example) of the original so I'll back it all up! - does it do a full backup every now again anyway? - should compression and subfile be used together? It would be really nice to see all these questions and more answered in one paper... Regards /gjs
