Karsten - See http://people.bu.edu/rbs/ADSM.QuickFacts for real-world
conditions under which customers have experienced messages
such as this one.
In your case, you are running in a Unix environment, so the cause
is most likely having exceeded the Unix Limits values. Root should
in most cases be given unlimited memory and filesize values.

Check if the 256 MB boundary is reached for your client process.
Perhaps your backup process needs more than one memory segment.

OS X 5.2.3 Client - ANS1030E System ran out of memory

2004-09-09 Thread Greg
Hi All,

I need some help! I have an OS X Server (10.3.5) node for which the daily incremental backup keeps failing. There are 4 very large XRAID partitions that contain hundreds of thousands of files that I need to backup incrementally every day. The backup always fails with the same message.

ANS1802E Incremental backup of 'haza:*' finished with 1 failure
Total number of objects inspected: 434,049
Total number of objects backed up: 513
Total number of objects updated: 0
Total number of objects rebound: 0
Total number of objects deleted: 0
Total number of objects expired:200
Total number of objects failed: 1

Aggregate data transfer rate: 71.90 KB/sec
Objects compressed by:0%
Elapsed processing time: 00:39:28
ANS1030E System ran out of memory. Process ended.

I have watched memory utilization during the backup. Here is the typical load while backing up:

PhysMem: 180M wired, 173M active, 647M inactive, 1001M used, 1.02G free

Disk space on the root volume is fine too. So if the system does page it has plenty of free space in /private/var/.

I have manipulated all the TSM tuneables with no success. Here is my system options file:

servername hamm
WEBPORTS 1000 0
nodename madrid
SCHEDMODeprompted
COMMmethod TCPip
TCPPort 1500
TCPServeraddress hamm.corp.apple.com

No errors in the hardware, crashreporter, or system log. The frustrating thing is I have three other identical system that don't have the problem. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,

Greg

Re: OS X 5.2.3 Client - ANS1030E System ran out of memory

2004-09-09 Thread Greg
Thanks for the prompt help Richard! I did check the fact list. I have
already set largecommbuffers=no, and set memoryefficientbackup=yes. The
problem still persisted.
However I may have found the culprit. The include/exclude is quite
extensive on the node. So I just took it out all together, and started
a new backup. So far the backup has proceeded much longer, and
successfully sent much more data than in previous attempts. It is still
running without issue. Will update the list as soon as I know for sure
it was the include/exclude.
Best regards,
Greg

Greg - Have you checked the causes of that condition in

Well... it wasn't the include/exclude. The backup failed again with the same error.

I took it one step further and tried to backup only the file system it failed on. It failed again. I inspected the dsmerror.log and found the out of memory error preceeded by a PrivIncrFileSpace warning.

From the dsmerror.log:

09/09/2004 14:15:09 PrivIncrFileSpace: Received rc=102 from fioGetDirEntries: haza :cstar:Public:Special:î

When I took a look at the directory where it failed I noticed a mismatch in a directory name. See below. I changed directories to /Volumes/haza/cstar/Public/Special/ and found a dir names . I changed dirs to . But once in I did a PWD and found that the OS reported the path as madrid:/Volumes/haza/bobr.

What the heck is going on... see below!

Our MAC people saw this recently, but on 9.2.x. They had to restore a disk a
folder at a time.

I initially got the impression that the question marks were your way of
obscuring sensitive information that should not be disclosed outside
your
company. Upon further thinking, I realized that they are the result of
the -q option of the 'ls' command, which is a default in the Mac OS X
'ls' command (unlike in AIX and Solaris, which threw me off (every Unix
is different)). The -q option helps reveal binary garbage in the name
of file system objects. I doubt that this situation has anything to do
with Unicode, but you may want to look at that same area through the
Finder, and see if it makes any sense of it. It's possible that the
owner of this system needs to do some fixit work to clean up its act.
(I'd strongly recommend Norton Utilities or the like to further help
straighten out this system.)
The binary file system stuff may or may not be inciting the ANS message
situation, but it is certainly the case that backing up that system in
its current condition may be a waste of time.
In my experience, every Windows or Mac should periodically be put
through an appropriate file system and disk analysis to uncover
structural problems and/or file irregularities, which can just get
worse over time, and will
inevitably cause problems, as you find now.
