thanks for your answers. I can't answer why our dba admins uses the 32 bit 
database on the 64 bit operating system. I'm only the TSM admin. I will ask 
them.

Boris,

Officially, Data Protection for SQL only supports
the x64 version while running on an x64 operating system and the x32 version 
while running on an x64 operating system.

I am still trying to understand why you would want to
run SQL Server 32-bit on a 64-bit OS.
