I didn't say they were the same. I was simply saying be wary of the
problems with recent LTO microcode releases. You might inadvertingly
break something while try to fix a completely different problem.

I spoke too soon in my last message. After further testing, the latest
code 1550 seems to have fixed my performance problems. Very cool...

Be wary of upgrading the firmware on LTO drives. See the thread last week
entitled "Re: LTO restore performance - seek problem?", there are some
major read performance problems in the last 3 releases of the LTO drive
firmware.

In the past two weeks i've gone from OBN1 to OCE1 to 12U7, and yesterday
to 1550. And i'm still having problems. I'd really like to go back to
OBN1 if i could find it...

Messages manual Appendix D goes into the ANR8302E error indicators.
I presume that the volume suffering the error was the input to the Reclaim.
As such, it would be a tape which was not written recently and thus was
subject to different conditions than current tapes, which are not
encountering like errors. Perhaps way back then the drive was in between
cleanings and residue had built up on the head; or perhaps the drive had
been having problems back then. Your service records, coupled with Activity
Log records as to the drive that wrote the tape, may provide further insight.
Perhaps the tapes were recorded under a different drive microcode level?

I would keep records of tapes which exhibited such errors and, after they
re-enter service (post reclamation), see if they show any further problems,
which would tend to indicate a true media problem.

Nope, but it looks possible you need to update your firmware:

Excessive Read Errors on LTO

2001-05-17 Thread Ruddy STOUDER

Hello,

My configuration is TSM Server 4.1.2, NT4.0 SP6, LTO 3583 with 2 tape
drives 3580 connected via Adaptec 29160. Drivers are the IBM ones in
version 1.1.7.3

Backups are running perfectly, restores are also running perfectly but
during the week-end, when reclamation is running, I get the following
error messages :

05/08/2001 16:39:04 ANR1417W Access mode for volume 265AADL1 now set
to
"read-only" due to excessive read error.
