HP-UX Client Performance - Tuning Tips anyone?

2001-05-06 Thread William Boyer

HP-UX 11.0
TSM Client 4.1 100MB-full duplex Ethernet.
TSM Server 4.1.3.0 on AIX 4.3 RS/6000 S80 with 2 Gigabit Ethernet adapters
configured as EtherChannel.

Could some one give us some tuning tips for not only the TSM client, but
HP-UX configuration settings to get optimum backup performance? We started
testing TSM on friday and this box is only giving about 200KB/sec throughput
while a Sun Solaris right next to it is getting over 4500KB/sec. The 'old'
ADSM performance guide really only lists server performance, not much on the
client. The Unix admins at this shop say that the HP box is a more powerful
server that the Sun box, but we can't seem to get it to move on backups.

Also, if anyone has tips for Sun Solaris...that would be appreciated just as
much!

P.S. I've searched the archives, but didn't find much. I'll keep trying with
different keywords, but thought I'd try the direct approach, too.

First the obvious things:

What' the performance like when you try to ftp a file to the TSM server? If
the ftp is also slow, then the problem is not with the TSM client.

Some tuning considerations for the TSM client:

txnbytelimit (in the client dsm.sys file) should be 25600
txngroupmax (in the server dsmserv.opt file) should be 256

also for the following:

TCPWINDOWSIZE
Specifies TCP sliding window size and allows multiple frames to be sent
before an acknowledgement is obtained from the receiver
Requires increased memory on the client

Recommendations:
Minumum of 32
Increase this size accordingly - start at about 2048 and work upwards
Experimentation required

TCPBUFFSIZE
Specifies size of client s internal memory buffer used to send to the
communications layer
Used by client only during backup; used by server only during restore
Requires increased memory on the client
Recommendations:
 Minimum of 32
Increase this size accordingly - start at about 2048 and work upwards
Experimentation required
