Re: Extend library capacity

Kurt,

Thanks for describing the fix. I've often wondered if a simple restart
would work. I, like others, usually delete all and redefine all.

I've got it solved finally. The new added slots on the physical library
were not yet allocated to the logical partition TSM is using. Which
explains why TSM didn't find them.

A simple restart of TSM did discover the new added slots afterwards.

Re: Extend library capacity

2007-08-01 Thread Baker, Jane
We found when we changed the library config (only logically) they told
us to re-configure, library defs, drives and paths but we didn't need
to.

We did need to run the 'update library serial=autodetect' to get it to
find it's new serial number as it is somehow linked to the slot number
or numbers???

Hope you get it resolved soon!

Jane.

Re: Extend library capacity

2007-07-31 Thread Wanda Prather
The document you reference is peculiar. It says the "server may have to
be restarted or the library audited or possibly redefined", but it doesn't
make clear the cases where it needs to be redefined.

AFAIK, when you change the number of slots in a TSM SCSI library, you have
to delete the library and drive definitions and redefine them.

Here's what I think you need to do:

Check out your tapes with REMOVE=NO
Make a copy of your DEVCONFIG file
Delete your paths
delete your drives
delete your library
Use the commands in the copy of your DEVCONFIG file to recreate the
library and drive and path definitions. (leave the SERIAL # off the
define drive command, let TSM figure it out.) TSM will pick up the new
slots.

CheCK YOUR tapes back in.
(You can make it easier by running a checkin for ALL tapes (search=yes) as
STATUS=SCRATch. TSM will skip those that shouldn't be scratch. Then run
a second checkin for all tapes status=PRIVATE.

Anybody got a different opinion?

Wanda

TSM is kind of funny when you mess with the library and/or definitions.
I usually end up removing and recreating all paths, drives and
libraries to resolve my issues.

Re: Tape Library Capacity Increase Help.

2003-09-19 Thread Curt Watts
Well, I managed to get it up and running. Good suggestion on the halt
and restart - completely slipped my mind to restart the box. It did
however take a full restart of the server (not just restarting the
service) in order for it to pick up the new config. As well, I had to
reenable the Managed Library license as the config had changed from the
previous one.

Oh, I had already increased the Max Scratch variable to accommodate.

Cheers,
  Curt

Did you halt and restart TSM after the Library was upgraded?
You need to do that so TSM picks up new configf of library.

You then need to immediately run an
"audit library blah checklabel=barcode" to synchronize inventory,
before doing any tape operations.

I managed to increase the capacity of our IBM 3583 tape library from
18 LTO tapes to 54 LTO tapes but now the question arises, how do I get
TSM (4.2.3.2) to recognize the increase in the Tape Pool. My fear is
that because the tape pool has been set up with the estimation of only
18 tapes, I'm going to have to create a new tape pool with the new
size
and move the data over.
I'm pretty sure the tape library is functional from the hardware
side
of things because I'm able to manually move tapes from the I/O port
into
the new tape cartidges. The reason behind my question is that when
trying to checkin more than 18 tapes, I'm getting a "Library is Full"
from TSM.

Thanks & Regards

Curt Watts

Did you halt and restart TSM after the Library was upgraded?
You need to do that so TSM picks up new configf of library.

You then need to immediately run an
"audit library blah checklabel=barcode" to synchronize inventory,
before doing any tape operations.

Re: Tape Library Capacity Requirement.

2002-03-12 Thread Daniel Sparrman
Hi 3 versions for incremental backup would, if you have 3.7TB of data, become 3 times the amount in the library(11.1TB). 4 versions of archieved information would become 4 times the amount of archived information(14.8TB if you archive all data). With this much information, you would get two important features using TSM: - You don't have to transport either full, nor Legato/Veritas incrementals(which means full+incr+incr+incr+incr+incr and then start over with full). - Reclamation. With this much information stored on tape, reclamation is necessary to keep the library from eating tapes.I would also recommend you to use a tape technique which stores a lot of information on each tape, such as LTO which stores 100GB uncompressed, and 200GB compressed. Using large tapes would get us to the next feature, which is copypools. Loosing one 200GB tape means loosing a lot of information. Therefore, using copypools as media protection is a good idea. On the other hand, using copypools means using twice the amount of tapes, as you have one copy of each tape that holds information. A IBM 3584 library holds 144 tapes as default, which means 28.8TB compressed, and can, with a small investment, hold 288 tapes, or 56.6TB compressed. If you would like to expand the library further, just add another frame to the library. Each frame can hold about 440 tapes, which means 80TB compressed. You can have up to five additional frames. The point is to not have to remove tapes from the library, as this is a manual intervention, and opens up for human errors. You could make it with a smaller library, but that would mean removing, and inserting,  tapes into the library. Best Regards Daniel Sparrman---Daniel SparrmanExist i Stockholm ABBergkällavägen 31D192 79 SOLLENTUNAVäxel: 08 - 754 98 00Mobil: 070 - 399 27 51-"ADSM: Dist Stor Manager" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: -To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]From: Zosimo Noriega <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>Sent by: "ADSM: Dist Stor Manager" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>Date: 03/12/2002 05:22AMSubject: Re: Tape Library Capacity Requirement.hi daniel, currently we're using ADSM 3.1 and IBM 3494 TL, we're planning to upgrade orchange the backup & tape library solution, so, we're still evaluating thesolution. we selected 3 backup solutions from the list (TSM, LEGATO,VERITAS)with there own proposed tape library. Hi

It sounds like you're going to use a "full backup" software such as Legato.
However, I will do my estimates based on TSM, which uses incremental
backups, and version management to be able to do point-in-time restores of
files(older version of a file than the latest) and applications.

I'd probably propose a IBM 3584 Anaconda with at least 3 drives, preferable
fibre attached.

I guess that you are going to use TSM with this library. Therefore, you
will probably not use full backups, but incremental. And, on fileservers, I
recommend using more than 3 versions(which is standard within TSM). This
will grow your total storage by the number of versions you want to use.

It' very hard to calculate total storage requirements, when you don't tell
us what kind of data that is going to be kept in the library(SQL databases,
fileservers and so on).

However, you can count with about 10% change every night on a fileserver,
and, if not to large, use full backups of databases.

I'd say you'll be storing about 10TB total, and preferable, have media
protection using copypools, which means another 10TB.

Re: Library capacity

2001-03-13 Thread Sharp, Neil (London)

Ah that age old problem. I have got around this by writing a AIX script that
I run daily which interogates that ATL to find of the following :

* Number of SCRATCH volumes in ADSM
* Number of PRIVATE volumes in ADSM
* Number of tapes in library that can be checked into ADSM
* Names of volumes that can be checked into ADSM as scratch tapes
* Misplaced volumes in the library
* Number of free cells in the library
* Number of cleaning cycles remaining

The scripts is as follows :

--
clear
rm mtlib.out
echo "Number of SCRATCH volumes in ADSM"
dsmadmc -id=x -password=x q libv|grep -i scratch|wc -l
echo ""
echo "Number of PRIVATE volumes in ADSM"
dsmadmc -id=x -password=x q libv|grep -i private|wc -l
echo ""
echo "Number of tapes in library that can be checked into ADSM"
mtlib -l /dev/lmcp0 -qI > mtlib.out
pg mtlib.out|grep -i ff00|wc -l
echo ""
echo " Names of volumes that can be checked into ADSM as scratch tapes"
pg mtlib.out|grep -i ff00
echo ""
echo " Misplaced volumes in the library"
echo ""
pg mtlib.out|grep -v FF00|grep -v 012|grep -v 01F
echo ""
echo "Number of free cells in the library"
mtlib -l /dev/lmcp0 -qL|grep "available cells"
echo ""
echo "Number of cleaning cycles remaining"
mtlib -l /dev/lmcp0 -qL|grep -i 3590

This information is transribed onto a spreadsheet daily. Obviously over a
period of time it is possible to analyse the output and look for trends in
usage. It works for me, hopefully you will find it useful.

Hi:
You can determine how many volumes are used by each storage group by
entering:
dsmadmc -id=userid -pa=password 'select stgpool_name,count(*) from volumes
group by
 stgpool_name'

You can determine the 'unused' by entering:

dsmcmd "SELECT LIBVOLUMES.VOLUME_NAME, LIBVOLUMES.STATUS FROM LIB
Volumes where libvolumes.status = 'Scratch'"

I can tell how many are going offsite each day by running:

SELECT VOLUMES.VOLUME_NAME, VOLUMES.STGPOOL_NAME, VOLUMES.ACCESS
FROM VOLUMES
WHERE (((VOLUMES.STGPOOL_NAME)="OFFSITEVOLS") AND (Not
(VOLUMES.ACCESS)='OFFSITE'));

Because our copypool that creates the offsite volumes is named offsitevols
and the status is changed to offsite when they are checked out.

Hope this helps.

With all the knowledge I have at my disposal, and I don't mean my own,
that's where you all come in, I'm looking for some commands within AIX or

the 3494 has, total, used and available? Sure I could start counting...no,
forget that idea Commands for this would help greatly.

Now with that figured out I'm looking to see if there is a way to figure out
how many tapes are used each day, for onsite and offsite, as opposed to how
many tapes are reclaimed/returned. If I could run this each day for a month
and maybe backdate it if possible, I might come up with an idea when we
would hit the wall. Taking into account the library is shared with MVS,
which has 2 drives of it's own, I would have to factor in their info if I
could get it.

I have Exchange and another group who want access now, which would put an
additional load on what I already have. So keeping in mind those could get
implemented before I get more space, I could very well run out even quicker
than expected. My own feeling is, even without the additional computers,
I'll run out of space before Q4.

mtlib -l/dev/lmcp# -qL | more
that will have all the library slot/tape info you need...(also cleaner
cycles)

the tape use "thing" has been a thorn in my rear for a long time now (going
on 6 years)
just use accounting records, take all the inbound traffic (arch, bkup, hsm)
add them up and divide by 10 (GB)
that will buy you some buffer space if your clients don't compress...
if mgmt says "what about compression" then you have to take all your tapes
(q vol dev=3590blah) take your average capacity and then use that to
determine how many tapes you use daily based on inbound traffic...

believe me, there are ways around running out of space but they are all ugly

Hi:
You can determine how many volumes are used by each storage group by entering:
dsmadmc -id=userid -pa=password 'select stgpool_name,count(*) from volumes group by
 stgpool_name'

You can determine the 'unused' by entering:

dsmcmd "SELECT LIBVOLUMES.VOLUME_NAME, LIBVOLUMES.STATUS FROM LIB
Volumes where libvolumes.status = 'Scratch'"

I can tell how many are going offsite each day by running:

SELECT VOLUMES.VOLUME_NAME, VOLUMES.STGPOOL_NAME, VOLUMES.ACCESS
FROM VOLUMES
WHERE (((VOLUMES.STGPOOL_NAME)="OFFSITEVOLS") AND (Not (VOLUMES.ACCESS)='OFFSITE'));

Because our copypool that creates the offsite volumes is named offsitevols and the
status is changed to offsite when they are checked out.

Hope this helps.

Hello all,

My current setup, H50, 3494LIB, 4 3590's, 7133 D40, is beginning to come to
a point where I need more capacity, or so I feel. I would like for the
company to order the next section of library, 2 3494's, memory for the
computer, DASD and a few other bits now, but I found out yesterday it won't
happen till Q4. Now I believe I may have a problem with this but without a
way for me to estimate how much the system will grow in relation to what I
have available I can't very well push them to order sooner.

With all the knowledge I have at my disposal, and I don't mean my own,
that's where you all come in, I'm looking for some commands within AIX or
TSM to get the information I need. Is there a way to find out how many slots
the 3494 has, total, used and available?

Thanks for the help,
