How to erase magstar-Tapes ?

2005-06-15 Thread Rainer Wolf
Hello All ,

we have a 3494 Library with currently both 3590 drives and 3592 drives.
Anything is moved now to 3592-tapes and we end using the 3590 - Drives.
The tsm is no problem -
Because we want to give the now unused J-Label(20GB) and K-Label(40GB)
to another company , I need to erase/zero the data on the old tapes - about
1000 .
Now my question: is there an efficient way to make the data on those
old tapes unreadable, but not only by labelling ?

Has someone done this ?
I have never done something outside adsm/tsm with the tapes and I think
it is better done from aix ?

Thanks a lot for any hints
Rainer

MAGSTAR tapes

2003-02-11 Thread Ubhaykar, Nitin
Hi TSMers,

We need to send some tapes (3590E) offsite, outside the country, and there is a good
possibility that the tapes will undergo X-ray checks while en-route. Can anybody
advice whether we can take any precautions to safeguard against accidental damage of
the tapes ?

Any help would be highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

X-rays affect film, not magnetic media. The only possible area of
concern that I know of is in the tapes coming too close to heavy
motors used in conveyor belts, but even then the magnetic effects
are probably too small to bother the recording.

Another point to consider...

If they are going by air, they will get very cold. At their destination
they may be subject to high levels of condensation, so ensure that they
acclimatise (at least 4 hours?)in a sealed container if possible and don't
put them into a tape drive until they are at room temperature.

We had some distroyed not long ago, and had Iron Mountain certify
they were distroyed. I have no idea what they charged.

Destroy old MagStar tapes?

2002-04-25 Thread Doug Baker

Hi all. We have replaced our 3575 library with a 3583 LTO. I want to get
rid of the old MagStar MP C-Format XL tapes. The data has been moved
by TSM. But I'd like to ensure that the data is permanently destroyed.
What's the best way to do this for 320 tapes? Are commercial services
required? Thanks for any info!

2002-04-25 Thread Jim Doll

If you plan to toss them. Use a strong electro magnet Should screw up the
tracking (That's what we did with our old Magstar 3480/90 reel tapes.)
Or what our tape librarian suggested a sledge hammer. We charged $1 a
tape on our United Way activity day, Was a interesting Activity. (Made
more money then the hole-in-one activity).

If you plan to sell them (not sure what the market for used magstar tapes
is) Have the vendor you sell them to certify the reformatting of the tape.
