NT client 3.7.2.0 installation

2000-09-10 Thread Eric Tang

Hi all,

I am installing TSM NT client 3.7.2.0 to NT4.0 SP5 for customer today.
During installation, there are a few problems:
1) During installation, there are two prompts of "Severe: The service
cannot be installed due to an unknown error".
2) I uninstall TSM client, and reboot machine. Reinstall TSM client got the
same two prompts of error.
3) I skip these errors and finished installation. in command line, run dsmc
archive (or inc) on a small file (dsm.opt) Dr watson: dsmc.exe Exception:
access violation (0xc005) Address 0x0047b1cb
4) In GUI, archive a file, there is ANS5148W message found in dsmerror.log
as below.
The node is newly registered on TSM server (AIX TSM3.7.3.0) and I don't why
there is such an message.

ANS5148W The server needs to do a one-time conversion of your archive data
before you can continue.
This operation may take a long time, and cannot be canceled once it has
started.
Are you willing to wait for the conversion to complete?

5) I reply this message and archive on GUI works OK. Retrieve is also OK.
6) From "Services" in "Control panel", found that "Client Acceptor"
"Remote Client Agent" are installed but not
"Central Scheduler Service".
7. Perform "dsmctuil installl scheduler" and scheduler service install OK.
8. In TSM Server, Define schedule to selective backup a small file on NT
client, scheduler is running OK and the file is backup.

Question:
1) how to determine what is the "service" cannot be installed. Does TSM
install the 3 services "CAD, Scheduler, Remoteagent" by default, if so,
will it be an indicator on scheduler installation error?
2) why command line got Dr watson but not GUI or scheduler?
3) The node is newly created on server, why is there ANS5148W message?
4) MS Exchange Arcserve (evaluation copy) are installed on the NT box,
any conflict to TSM? (although I don't think there is)

I have found if you are upgrading tsm 3.7.1.0 to 3.7.2.01 for example you
have to stop the schedule service prior to the install other wise the
client may not work right after the install

Eric,

The message "Severe: The service
cannot be installed due to an unknown error".
sounds bad. I can go to Tivoli.com and use the knowledge base to look that
message up. My gut instinct says to check what is "running" at the time of
install. Microsoft will tell you that 3rd party programs running may
interfere with installations, that is what I bet is occuring. 1) did you
uninstall Antivirus like Norton or Dr Solomon. 2) any other 3rd party apps
that monitor, besides Dr. Watson.

Sam.

Re: NT client 3.7.2.0 installation

2000-09-05 Thread Andy Raibeck

Hi Eric,

I am probably covering ground that's already been covered, but
thought I would throw in my "two cents" anyway.

1) You mention installing 3.7.2.0, but hopefully you really mean
3.7.2.01 (or higher). Of the 3.7.2 levels, I recommend
3.7.2.16. Do not, under any circumstances, install 3.7.2.0.
That was an initial release of the 3.7.2 client code that
was quickly pulled, and replaced with 3.7.2.01. 3.7.2.01 is the
true GA release for 3.7.2. But as I said, 3.7.2.16 is what I
recommend. If you go with 3.7.2.16, be sure to review at least
the top of the READ1STC.TXT file for information on the APARs
that are fixed in this code.

2) When you run the install, make sure you shut down all
applications (including NT services) that are not essential to
running the operating system. This includes Arcserve, any
database applications, system monitoring software, antivirus
software, etc. This is a good rule for installing any new
software, not just TSM. Usually the kinds of errors you are
seeing could occur if an existing instance of the TSM web
client services (client acceptor and/or remote client agent)
is currently running. Just the same, stopping all non-
essential software is a good idea.

3) Make you are logged in to a *local* administrator account
   when you do the install.

4) Near the end of the "Migration Information" section of the
READ1STC.TXT file is a discussion of how to clean up any
remnants of a prior ADSM/TSM installation. If you suspect
that an existing installation of the client could be
interfering, that information may be helpful in cleaning
it up. Normally this shouldn't cause you any problems, so I
point it out as a last resort.

Regarding the installed services: The 3.7.2.x client installs
"skeleton" services for the TSM Client Acceptor and TSM Remote
Client Agent. It does not install a skeleton scheduler service.
In general these skeleton services are not very helpful as
they do not have sufficient information ahead of time to make
them useful (such as node name, password, etc.). So instead,
after the install is complete, use the Setup Wizard in the
GUI client (run dsm.exe, then select the Utilities/Setup Wizard
menu item) or the command line dsmcutil.exe utility to
configure the web client and scheduler services.

Hope this helps,

Andy

thank you for all those response. I will re-visit customer on Friday
evening and repeat the installation.
If there is still problem during installation or dsmc execution, I will
stop the other processes (eg Arcserve) one by one for problem isolation.
Thank you.
