strange behavior by novell restore touching carts twice

2004-07-21 Thread Schaub Joachim Paul ABX-SECE-ZH
Hi all,

We had a point in time restore from Novell client (GUI).
Runtime about 1.5 hours and restored 6.5MB.
The restore-process needed 2 3590E carts twice and 1 3590E for 3 times. Other 9 3590E
tapes for onetime.(11 Volumes for 200GB total?)
All the data are from one Novell volume (200GB,NSS,also 1 Filespace), the collocation
is YES since the pool exist, they are enough scratch volumes in the pool, reclaim
allways to 55%, compress=yes in dev. class.

09:49:03opened volume ST0261.
09:57:24opened volume ST0205.
10:03:05opened volume ST0165.
10:07:50opened volume ST0023.
10:10:03opened volume ST0350.
10:14:10opened volume ST0264.
10:21:28opened volume ST0372.

10:43:55opened volume ST0265.
10:48:28opened volume ST0435.
10:52:22opened volume ST0377.
10:54:06opened volume ST0107.
11:07:57opened volume ST0270.

Environment:
NetWare Client OS Level: 5.60 Client Version: Version 5, Release 1, Level 6.0
TSM Server 5.2.2.4 on Z/OS

Is it normal the tapes are needed more then one time? Do i missing some restore
parameter? (for example like 'noquery')

Any help would be appreciated.

I have seen tapes mounted twice for one restore to Windows and Unix.
As far as I can tell, this happens because files spanned across two
or more tapes are not handled very intelligently. For example, TSM
will mount a tape that ends with the first segment of a spanned file,
mount the tape containing the rest of the file, mount some other tapes,
and then remount the second tape to read files contained entirely on
that tape.

Backup from Novell / Restore on Windows

2003-07-01 Thread Rane, Yashwant
Hi,

Is it possible backup files from Novell server using Novell B/A Client and restore it
on Windows server using windows B/A Client?

Is there any work around to achieve this? (other than mapping Novell server disk to
Windows and backup using Windows B/A Client)

Novell Restore with spaces

2003-05-14 Thread Coats, Jack
I am still back on Novell 4.11 (yes, unsupported, we are trying to remedy
that), and a user has a directory
name with spaces in it. How do I restore files within that directory.

His directory is:
data:home\username\my directory with spaces\filetorestore.xls

And he needs this point in time (of course).

How do I put in spaces? I tried %20 and enclosing the directory with
single quotes,
and double quotes, nothing seems to work.

My current owrkaround is doing a re-directed restore of the entire
directory to
another directory name (without spaces) as a point in time, like:

restore -pitdate=05/05/2003 -pittime=23:59:59 data:home/userID/dir*
data:home/userID/newdirectory

then go copy the file out of the restored directory.

Any other suggestions?

Is there a way to just restore the files attribute without restoring the

Re: Novell restore

Try do a normal restore ... in the restore command specify '-volinfo
-replace=no' as part of you parameters and you should be fine. The
rights should be restored but the file not replaced if it exists.

Novell restore : ANS1905E

2002-10-25 Thread Christoph Pilgram
Hi all,

TSM-Server : V.4.1.4 on AIX 4.3.3
TSM-Client : V 4.2.1.27 on Netware 5.00.09 Supp-Pack 02

During restoring of data on a novell server we got the following error for
about 4000 different objects ( of 1.100.000 restored objects) :

10/22/2002 16:40:27 ANS1905E NetWare SMS error processing
'DATEN:/PROJEKTE/H92 ZWG RMT/Protokolle/Bauprotkolle/Besp.26.08.doc':
(TSA500.NLM 5.4 315) The program's attempt to scan failed, probably because
an invalid path was specified.

The restore was a command line restore of a complete volume.

In a second try we could restore those files with the web-client.

But what caused these errors ?

Thanks for any help

Re: Novell restore question

2002-02-18 Thread Loon, E.J. van - SPLXM

Hi Robert!
TSM supports multi-session backup. Multi-session restore is not yet
supported. I heard that it will be implemented in TSM 5.1, so until that
time, you will have to start 3 separate dsmc restore processes, like Bill
suggested.

Did someone known how I can restore 3 tapes in parallel ??.

Novell restore performance.

2001-08-21 Thread Ofer

Hi All,

I have TSM 4.1.2 on NT box With 3494 library. The TSM Server have no
more then 20 clients.
The performance on the TSM usually is good.
if I am restoring a small nt file the restore is taking no more then 3
minutes which is very nice.
My problem is on my novell box.
Will I am restoring a file( about 3mb file size ) from the TSM server
this process take about 17 minute.
I assumed that this was the time for the 3494 to search for the file on
the cardrig,
but after I checked the q mount I have nothets that the mount for the
cardrig start after about 14 minutes.

Firs think that cam in mind is that the system querying the database in
that time, but I have monitored the system
and there was no CPU or IO utilization more then usual.

Why the 3494 shuttle is mount the cardrig after such along time?
Is there any way to tell TSM to make the mount more quickly ?

Thanks in advise
Ofer Ccc.

Unable to allocate directory handle is just Novell way of saying you don't
have rights to do that.
Most likely cause, smdr.nlm has a bad copy of the DS

Exit out of any dsmc.nlm that is running
