TSM command: checkin libv 3584lib search=bulk checkl=barcode status=scratch 2. Leisurely stroll to the library and load 10 tapes. 3. Leisurely stroll back to your console and run q request 4. Reply to it. You've got 60 minutes to do so. If you're loading >10 tapes: 1. Leisurely stroll to the library, open it up, place all tapes directly into empty slots into the library. 2. Leisurely stroll back to your console and run checkin libv 3584lib search=yes checkl=barcode status=scratch or label libv 3584lib search=yes labelsource=barcode checkin=scratch Even easier--there's no request to reply to. -- Mark Stapleton ([EMAIL PROTECTED])
Re: 3494 libray lifespan??
The biggest complaint I have with the 3584 is the interface via the LCD panel/web interface. It is too dumb. No autoloading of tapes from the I/O station. 1. load 10 tapes in library, then run over to TSM console. 2. TSM commands: checkin libv 3584lib search=bulk checkl=barcode status=scratch (or label libv) q request reply 1 3. repeat Ejecting them is also a pain as you have to do them 10 or 30 at a time depending on the size of your I/O station. Life is easier with the 3494 and the OS/2's library/tape managment program. Maybe I am missing somthing with TSM and 3584's does anyone else have a better way? Yes, if you had a single Frame of each side by side and took a quick look, you'd think they were the same. The "Big Iron" is same design. Main difference is the electronics of the library, 3584 is more advanced. No OS/2 computer for library manager. All now on CPU boards, can control from front LCD Panel or Web interface. David Longo >>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 12/16/02 02:14PM >>> > If they had turned a good mechical engineer loose on it to build a new slot > design it could have handled lto carts also. > used it for lto carts also As far as I can tell, the 3584 UltraScalable Tape Library IBM markets for LTO and DLT tapes is a 3494 with a different slot design. There are advantage and disadvantage in both LTO and 3590's. We are sticking with 3590's. David C. I think it is more of a question when a VTS replacement would become available and 3590 is significantly slower than other technologies. There is still development going on for the 3494 library itself. There will be a replacement 3590 drive soon. It is not clear if that drive will be in the 3494 library or in a LTO type library. My guess is both, but I have not seen a product direction, so anything is possible. At this point, I would review my data requirements, install new capacity in LTO for open systems if it is more cost effective, and seek an answer from IBM. Paul D. We had our 3494 library with 8 tape drives for over 7 years. Still running strong In January, will be expanding our 3494 and adding an extra Robot and upgrade our drives to the latest tapes. David C. Re: 3494 libray lifespan??
We have 7 that are currently 6 or 7 years old and still going strong ! Two were old VTS libraries from our old MVS environment (L14's I believe is their technical #) just throw away a few parts and you've got an L-12 :-) I think all started in the area of 4 frames and most are 8 frames now. Only the old VTS are HA libraries, all the rest have just a single accessor (but dual grippers). To be truthful, they will probably only be purged from the market by lack of parts & increased cost of service only after IBM has a new line of ATL's that they want to push out to the market and even then, other support firms will buy old ones for parts and continue to offer service contracts.
