Having been a V6.1 beta tester (now that it has been released I guess
I can speak about it), I can confirm that as of the last update I have

not seen anything for zOS other than s390 Linux.

Also, they will not be supporting Linux NON-x64, which causes me
issues since 2 of my RH Linux server are not x64 capable and will
 require replacing/upgrading/merging with another server.

There are different methods to upgrade the DB. Perhaps they have not

I have seen issues with my db upgrade but discovered they were there
before the upgrade. I restored my old db and ran commands to fix the
problems and at this time am trying to go through the upgrade again, but
I suspect I will not see these issues now.

I'm not one to speak for IBM but I would hope based on what others
have seen that there would be a procedure to minimize any db issues
before running the upgrade especially if the upgrade will not find them.

Re: TSM v6 -announcement

2009-02-13 Thread Dave Canan

The organization I belong to in IBM was involved in the beta program for
TSM V6. We assisted customers in the installation and training for the new
release. I did the education for the DB Upgrade process, and also assisted
in some of the testing for it. I'd like to pass on several comments here
concerning this post.

1. IBM set a goal for the DB Upgrade process of 5GB/hr, and that is the
expectation we'd like to set. As people have said, YMMV, and we have seen
cases where customers have gotten much better than this. There are a lot of
factors that can influence the upgrade performance, but the expectation or
goal is 5GB/hr.
2. The final code is not finished yet. Remember, announcement was this
week, but GA is not until end of March. There are still a few enhancements
that development is considering to possibly speed this up.
3. I would strongly suggest attending a Storage Technical Exchange being
given 2/26 (8:00 am PST) on an overview of TSM V6. This is NOT a session
that will go into details of the functions of V6. It is more of a session
to explain the considerations that should be thought about before starting
the migration to TSM V6. We're going to talk about things you may want to
consider such as hardware requirements, software requirements. space
requirements, and upgrade techniques to the new database. Lots of
questions are being raised here about what this migration will involve. I
would suggest asking them at this session.

At 11:03 AM 2/13/2009 -0500, you wrote:

 Re: [ADSM-L] TSM v6 -announcement

I have read announcement letter 209-004 multiple times and was looking

at the server documentation that was available and there were no
mention of TSM version 6 for z/OS server. There were documentation
for z/OS BA client and API. Is this a subtle hint that TSM version 6
for z/OS server is not available or is it being drop? Is it being

 delay?

Mmm. I don't know if I'm supposed to still be embargoed, but I guess
that if they're talking about it at conferences I can too..

Data point: my 40G DB;

Extract database: 0:41
Insert database: 7:20

This was part of an exercise where they were having me test with a
slightly optimized version too, and that insert time was 5:06.

This is on two-year-old p520s.

be ware that TSM on z/OS has been at about ADSM 3.7 capability level
in most recent releases and that if you required new features IBM
would direct you to zLinux anyway, this is nothing new

non-x86_64 being 32bit linux on intel/amd CPU, LinuxPPC and zLinux
