Re: W2K - System Object - Restore Problems

2002-08-25 Thread Robertson, G.Louis

In addition to backing up and restoring the system object I also backup and
restore the SystemState using ntbackup. This adds an additional step to my
restore process but has allowed me to consistently restore the registry and
related files.

I appreciate your help.
I guess what I was asking was is there any documentation that states that
you should install the client into a new directory?
I have not seen any docs and we were able to restore before we tried using
Ghost.

From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of

I've never found that document of one exists.

\eep in mind, gentlemen, that TSM does not support bare metal restores
*officially*. There are those that have worked out the processes necessary
to make such restores work properly. (There are some who work for my company
that have done so.)

The basic thing to remember is that you cannot restore system objects while
the system objects are being used. You must build the initial OS (with their
system objects) in a non-default directory, restore the files and original
system objects from TSM, swap some files from point A to point B, and
reboot.

It's actually quite easy. As long as you are installing and not deploying
your software, you should be able to select the path that you want to
install into. The default is something like c:\program
files\tivoli\tsmyou just need to change it to something like c:
\temptsm\tsm. This will put all the objects there and should simplify both
the registry and object restore portion of your BMR.

You didn't by chance reboot between the data restore and the registry
restore? If so, then that would certainly create problems. I know when
you restore the c:\ completely that the OS will say you need to reboot, but
you actually have to say no and then restore your system objects, then
reboot.

install the OS and TSM (to a different directory) from scratch. Then do
the TSM recovery procedures and see if that alleviates the problems.

I've had this happen. Even if I was recovering to like hardware, but my
systems have always seemed fine when I was done. When you do this, do you
install TSM into an alternate directory? If you don't install to an
alternate source, then the registry keys for TSM will pound on itself and
you may get unpredictable results. Although I have gotten errors even when
I think I do everything right.

I have had problems restoring the System Objects for a W2K server.

I restore the boot/system files successfully ( C: Drive).
Then it asks me to reboot and I say NO.
I then attempt to restore the entire System Object.

Sometimes it works...
Other times it begins to restore but then disappears in the middle. I
don't get a confirmation that it was completed.
Sometimes I can reboot and try the restore of the System Objects again and
it works, other times it doesn't.

Has anyone had similar problems?
