David,

I'd like to see an example of this. What do you mean when you say "it
backs up the remote volume to itself"?

Re: Restore of a NetWare Cluster... what's happening?

2003-07-24 Thread Marsh, David
As long as my server can see the clustered volume, my restore works
fine. I mention that because I use this as a migration method. In the
dsm.opt of a clustered volume, I specify a volume on another Novell
server so that it backs up the remote volume to itself. Then I restore
to the directory structure on the clustered volume. All in all, my
backups, restores, and failovers work very well.

Hi Dave

Thanks for your input, our setup is quite similarly...

Only difference are:

 - I have followed Jims idea, copying the dsmcad to dsmcadr1 for
resource 1 and so one!
 - Furthermore I use the PASSWORDDIR option in my DSM.OPT

Have you restored your cluster without having the trouble I have had...
or have you been lucky, and by accident avoiding any
migrations/databasebackups?

Hi all

I've been restoring some data on a NetWare Cluster... and I have had
several problems doing this:

The TSM Server is a 5.1.6.2 on a AIX 4.3.3.
Client software, NetWare 6, SP3 and TSM Client 5.1.6.0.

Problem:
Every time I tried to start a restore on the cluster, the following
happened:
 - Client went to MediaWait (but no media was mounted)
 - Client went to Run (still no media mounted)
 - Client went to Receivewait, and after 600 sec. the server disconnects
the server:

Logs:
On server: ANR0481W Session 49492 for node
(NetWare)terminated - client did not respond within 300 seconds.
On Client: ANS1005E TCP/IP read error on socket = 11, errno = 54, reason
: 'Connection reset by peer'.

The scary thing is, if I made a restore of a filespace from the SYS:
volume (not backed up as a cluster), then it all worked fine!!

Solution:
Stop all migration and databasebackups - and all works fine!!! What's
happening?? is it a designfailure... or is it working as planned? It
cannot be true you can't make a restore on a NetWare Cluster, and a
migration and/or a databasebackup at the same time.

I have tried to reproduce the failure... and everytime I start to
migrate or make a databasebackup - the restore fails!!

What's happening???

Hi Lee

The smsrun.bas file has been changed to: nlmArray = Array("SMDR", "TSA600
/cluster=off", "TSAPROXY")

And the latest available update to the Target Service Agents has been applied
(TSA5UP12).

Thanks for the input, but this should be covered ;o)

So I'm certain the problem is related to the filespace made by a NetWare Cluster!

Sounds like your server COMMTimeout value is unrealistically low
for major client operations.

Flemming,

I would be interested in any feedback you might get on this issue. I've
not experienced it, but with this Netware stuff you never know!

What, again, are your version levels for server and client?

Hi Richard

Note that the problem only occurs while restoring a NetWare Cluster!!! And in a
situation in which there are no processes occuring... the restores works fine...

So I don't believe it has anything to do with the COMMTimeout... in that case the
problem should be more persistent!
