TDP Exchange indiviual mailbox restore failure

2010-10-27 Thread Bjoern Rackoll

Hi all,

during the installation of the TDP for Exchange product for a new
environment we ran into the problem that the restore of an individual
mailbox to a .pst file didn't work, the trace showed the error
'MAPI_E_NETWORK_ERROR'. TSM support suggested that it is the problem
noted in http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21445283 .

However, the 'workaround' described in this technote can't be applied in
our environment (the Mailbox Server and CAS roles are on different
servers for a reason, and between these servers is a firewall preventing
Outlook clients from talking directly to the mailbox server). Has anyone
seen the same problem, and if yes, how did you deal with it?

OS: Windows 2008 Server R2, 64bit
B/A-Client: 6.2.1.3
TDP Exchange: 6.1.2.1
TSM Server: 5.5.4.0 on AIX

Re: TDP Exchange indiviual mailbox restore failure

2010-10-27 Thread heikel, cory
Bjoern,

For Exchange 2010, both the Client Access (CAS) role and the Mailbox role must
be installed on the machine where the Data Protection for Exchange mailbox
restore is being performed.

see: http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21446043

What we ended up doing was defining a "management" server for exchange that had
both of these roles.

Hello,

We met the same problem.
The only workaround we found is that both "Exchange Domain Servers" "Exchange

You need to have the CAS role on the DB servers for the mailbox restore API to
function.

where exactly on the mailbox server did you set these permissions? Did I

Re: TDP Exchange indiviual mailbox restore failure

2010-10-28 Thread Bjoern Rackoll

Hi Del,

As Cory stated and is documented:

"For Exchange 2010, both the Client Access (CAS) role and the Mailbox
role must be installed on the machine where the
Data Protection for Exchange mailbox restore is being performed."

yes, I've read that document. Since we cannot go that road, I'm looking
for alternatives. Is there any other (probably even third-party) tool
that can be used to extract one user's mailbox from a complete Exchange
database restore?

This is a current limitation that will require a fix from Microsoft
and possibly some updates to Data Protection for Exchange
to resolve completely.

IBM is working with Microsoft to resolve this limitation.

Is there any timeframe for that? Any technote by Microsoft?

Until a "fix" is available, the only workaround is to perform
the IMR restore on a machine that has the CAS role installed.

The machine that has the CAS role installed has no mailbox role, and no
access to storage. That will stay that way.

I'm sorry to say that IMR with CAS and mailbox roles separated are an
absolute requirement in our setup, so if there's no solution in a
not-too-long timeframe (and be it with some third-party tool), we have
to look for a completely different backup solution for Exchange.

Re: TDP Exchange indiviual mailbox restore failure

2010-10-28 Thread Del Hoobler
Bjoern,

I have seen many customers set up a special Exchange server just for
doing these IMR restores. It helps offload the processing so that
their production servers are not consumed by the IMR restores.
It also provides relief for the problem described below until a
final solution is available.

IBM is actively addressing the limitation and working
closely with Microsoft to get it resolved. Since this does
require a fix from Microsoft, I cannot tell you exactly when
a fix will be available, but there is something in the works.
We hope to see something fairly soon, but I cannot
guarantee it since it involves a hotfix from Microsoft.

Until then, you can look at the "Restore-Mailbox" Powershell
cmdlet or tools like FastBack for Exchange to help bridge you.
There are other 3rd-party tools that can extract mailbox data
directly from the .EDB file if you search them on the web.

Thanks,

Del

2010-10-29 Thread Tyree, David
We use a product from Quest Software, for our Exchange 2003.
http://www.quest.com/recovery-manager-for-exchange/

they say it supports Exchange 2007 and 2010 as well. Our only experience
has been with the 2003 version.

And that experience has been great. We use to recover emails that users
have "accidently" deleted.

Re: TDP Exchange indiviual mailbox restore failure

2011-05-25 Thread Danny Schmanny
Greetings ADSM-L List Subscribers:

I am 'replying' to an existing ADSM-L list 'subject' (hoping this works).

Here is the current configuration on both of our Exchange 2010 Mailbox Servers:

OS: Windows 2008 Server R2, 64bit
B/A-Client: 6.2.1.0
TDP Exchange: 6.1.2.0
TSM Server: 5.5.5.0 on Windows 2003 R2, 64bit

About 7 months have gone by since the topic 'TDP Exchange Individual Mailbox
Restore Failure' has been commented on. I have a few questions that I have
been tasked to find the answer to:

Question 1: Did I miss the promised bug fix Microsoft was going to provide to
resolve individual mailbox restores? For example, is there another post that
addresses the 'fix' besides this one?

Question 2: It has been commented on that the CAS role needs to be installed on
the mailbox server. Does the mailbox server need to contain actual mailboxes
for the restore to work? Or, could a mailbox server with the mailbox server
role (but not actually hosting any mailboxes) have the CAS role installed on it
and be able to have a mailbox restored to it? (Kind of a workaround solution -
just not sure the mailbox server needs actual mailboxes in order for the
restore to work). What we want to achieve is getting a temporary mailstore
that is not in Production to retrieve the actual e-mail messages

Question 3: How successful has anyone been with restoring the mailbox
'elsewhere' and using a tool (third party or other) to get to the messages for
restore purposes?

Question 4: How do I change my contact (e-mail address) on the listserv (as I
am no longer schma...@lgca.org but rather danny.schma...@lgca.org)?

Thanks for any nudge in the right direction.

Danny Schmanny
