TDP FOR EXCHANGE 2.2
Hi TSM'rs Just thought that I would share with you all a recent TSM incident involving TDP for Exchange v2.2 running on a Windows 2000 Server. A little over 8 months ago a problem arose where we could not get the Exchange TDP to install on a Windows 2000 server. After many attempts to install and reinstall the last resort was to completely blow away the server and reinstall everything. We even did a disaster recovery install of Exchange 2000 again just in case anything was wrong with the Exchange installation; thankfully a full server reinstall was not required. Anyway after discussing this problem with the code developers and Microsoft a solution was finally found. Within an Exchange registry key an entry exists which details the full path to the MAD.exe file. What was discovered is that the path to the MAD.exe file was encapsulated with double quotes i.e. file path. After running some debug code from the Tivoli developers and with the assistance of Microsoft this anomaly was highlighted. The double quotes were removed and replaced with single quotes and behold the Exchange TDP worked as it should have 8months ago. So if anybody else is or has experienced this problem don't hesitate to get the developers involved they did a great job in resolving what was a very long and frustrating problem. Happy TSMing Gary

TDP for Exchange 2.2 .
I am testing for our migration to W2K and E2K. The proposal for our E2K servers is clustered system with 4 Storage Groups and 4 DBs in each, should total somewhere around 80 - 100 GB per E2K site. 4 sites in all. What I am looking for: 1) I have tested the Scheduler and utilizing the command file have found that the server is taking quite a hit with all four storage groups backing up at the same time. Is there a way to delay the start of each storage group ? In other words kick one off wait X amount of time, then kick off the next ? I was originally looking at multiple schedulers but that would require me to have a different nodename for each scheduler. This is also required to complete in a 12 hour window, with 65 server class machines backing up to each of our 3 TSM servers at the same time. 2) We have a long mail retention requirement for Legal purposes. I was able to get them to agree to a Monthly scheme, but the documentation mentions that archiving is not an option for the TDP for Exchange 2.2. What are other sites doing to get long term retention? In Exchange 5.5 and TDP 1.1 we wrote a script that ran once a day that queried the server and sorted them in reverse order. That way we could keep the first backup for each month in reverse order that would be the last backup of the month and deleted the rest for that month. Other that policy settings has anyone figured out a way to alter the retention ? 3) There are multiple Domains in our proposal. For restore purposes I am suggesting we have a separate forest setup with a single box performing all functions except the Exchange server. Then rebuilding the Exchange box when ever a different domain has a restore request. Any other ideas out there ? 4) I have not tested the cluster portion yet are there any obvious pitfalls to avoid ? If anybody has been through this before I appreciate hearing from you. Duane Ochs Systems Administration Quad/Graphics Inc. 414.566.2375

Re: TDP for Exchange 2.2 and storage group problem
Mark, Are you using the /EXCSERVER=virtual-server-name option? In a cluster setup, it MUST be specified. (See page 35 in the GUI chapter and page 66 of the command-line chapter.) After getting the client to at least run, which was not a trivial exercise, we've run into a brick wall. We can't drill down the left-hand pane's tree past the 'Information Store' entry; in other words, the backup GUI can't seem to see the storage groups. (The customer is running clustered Exchange 2000 servers.) I think the error number the GUI gives us is ACN5725E; the command line gives us error message ACN0151E (I think) in the log file. We think it's probably a syntax issue with the include lines in dsm.opt, but the documentation is a little thin. Tivoli support took the matter to level 2 late this afternoon, and I've gotten no response yet.
