Your Options in the device class: Set your Estimated Capacity under the maximum value of your tapes. TSM uses this value only for calculating tha capacity of your storagepool and so on ... Set your maximum capacity to 0. TSM writes until the tape is full! So TSM can detect the maximum value itself! Set compression to yes. Than TSM activates the IDRC compression of your 3590 drive. This should work then! Re: Problems with TDP for Oracle 2.2 on NT 6a.
Norbert, Post the contents of your dsm.opt and tdpo.opt. May be something in those that is causing the problem. But for trouble shooting, you should see what messages are being posted in the Tsm server's activity log as well as the error logs on the client system. The TSM Server activity log will tell you what node is trying to connect, and it maybe that it is not the one that you are expecting. TDP for Oracle 2.2 for NT - orasbt.dll not found
Hi, has anybody succeedeed to get running TDPO 2.2 on Windows NT? The connections to the TSM-Server (4.1), i.e. tdpoconf showenv works. But Oracle uses the dummy API instead of the TSM agent (Warning: Oracle Test Disk API) if I try to allocate a channel of type sbt_tape. Obviously Oracle cannot find and link the DLL. This scenario is described in the RMAN user's guide troubleshooting section. The guide suspects a problem with the system path, but I cannot see any. orasbt.dll is installed under the sytem directory c:\winnt\system32, which is in the system path. Maybe I have missed something as I am neither an experienced NT admin nor an Oracle guru. Any hints are appreciated! TDP for Oracle 2.2 poor restore performance.
hi, It's hard to say why the restore is slow. Also it's hard to say whether Oracle or TSM or both are causing the problem. I would recommend to turn on TSM API tracing and look for dsmGetData() Entry, Exit trace points. Check the time spent between each entry, exit point. If you are seeing big gaps between entry and exit point it will be most likely TSM or network is causing the problem. If you see big gaps between exit and entry point, it's most likely Oracle is causing the problem. I found an interesting RMAN restore performance problem on Oracle Metalink web site. The bug number is 1551773 and the description of the bug is Rman restore runs very slowly when there are so many rows in the ckp table. Another restore problem bug number is 1456242, Many dbwr wait for 'file identify' during rman restore. May be you can check to see whether you are running into any of these bug or not. In order to use shared memory, client and server must be at the same level. So you must have 64 bit TSM AIX server to use shared memory. If you have 64 bit TSM server, please see 'Configuring Shared Memory' section in the TDPO 2.2 manual. It's written for 32 bit AIX but you will have to do the same for 64 bit also. regards, Thiha Has anyone experienced the following or have any idea what may be up? Server:Oracle 8.1.7 and TSM 4.1 on the same box. Client:TDP for Oracle 2.2, 64 bit, commethod TCPIP AIX: 4.3 Time to backup 28 GB using 1 channel: 1 hour 15mins Time to restore the same data using 1 channel: 20 hours and only 13 GB has been sent so far. The same tdpo.opt file has been used for the rman backup as for the rman restore. The tape drive has been available the whole time (no media waiting). What could be responsible? Any chance this is an Oracle issue? (just for interests sake - am I right in thinking the 64 bit API will not work with shared memory? There was an indignant message to this effect when I tried to use shared mem initially, and I have a notion I've seen this in a readme somewhere).

Question about TDP for Oracle 2.2.
Is anyone have experience of installing TDP agane for Oracle 8.0.5 64bit ? Attention: It's OK in Oracle 32bit but it failed in Oracle 64 bit. Is TDP support Oracle 64bit for any version ? I have some problems when I try to install TDP for Oracle 2.2 on HP 11 (64bit) with Oracle 8.0.5 (64bit). 1. In the Installation Guide , it said that I should install the TSM API 4.1.2.12 that comes with this package. After I installed the TDP packages in the CD , I use swlist command to check the version and I see the version of API is 4.1.2 Is it correct to run TDP ? 2. When I try to relink RMAN and TDP for Oracle I got some errors as follows : I use the make script suggested by Installation Guide : $make -f ins_rdbms.mk LLIBMM=/usr/lib/pa20_64/libobk.sl -lC ioracle I got an error as follows: ld: Can't find library or mismatched ABI for -lC Fatal error. *** Error exit code 1 So I use the make script to run again: $make -f ins_rdbms.mk LLIBMM=/usr/lib/pa20_64/libobk.sl ioracle I got the errors as follows: ld: Type mismatch for symbol oclose; resolving FUNC symbol (in file /oradisk2/ ora805/lib//libnetwork.a[nzdo.o]) to OBJECT symbol (in file /oradisk2/ora805/lib //libclient.a[oclose.o]) ld: Type mismatch for symbol odefin; resolving FUNC symbol (in file /oradisk2/ ora805/lib//libnetwork.a[nzioa.o]) to OBJECT symbol (in file /oradisk2/ora805/li b//libclient.a[odefin.o]) ld: Type mismatch for symbol oerhms; resolving FUNC symbol (in file /oradisk2/ ora805/lib//libnetwork.a[nzdo.o]) to OBJECT symbol (in file /oradisk2/ora805/lib //libclient.a[oerhms.o]) ld: Type mismatch for symbol oexec; resolving FUNC symbol (in file /oradisk2/o ra805/lib//libnetwork.a[nzdo.o]) to OBJECT symbol (in file /oradisk2/ora805/lib/ /libclient.a[oexec.o]) ld: Type mismatch for symbol olog; resolving FUNC symbol (in file /oradisk2/or a805/lib//libnetwork.a[nzdo.o]) to OBJECT symbol (in file /oradisk2/ora805/lib// libclient.a[olog.o]) ld: Type mismatch for symbol ologof; resolving FUNC symbol (in file /oradisk2/ ora805/lib//libnetwork.a[nzdo.o]) to OBJECT symbol (in file /oradisk2/ora805/lib //libclient.a[ologof.o]) ld: Type mismatch for symbol oopen; resolving FUNC symbol (in file /oradisk2/o ra805/lib//libnetwork.a[nzdo.o]) to OBJECT symbol (in file /oradisk2/ora805/lib/ /libclient.a[oopen.o]) ld: Type mismatch for symbol oparse; resolving FUNC symbol (in file /oradisk2/ ora805/lib//libnetwork.a[nzdo.o]) to OBJECT symbol (in file /oradisk2/ora805/lib //libclient.a[oparse.o]) The Engineer of Oracle advice me to install HP PTF PHSS , PHSS_22514 . It's still the same problem after I install the PTF. The Engineer of HP tell me that is a problem of shared library because I try to link libobk.sl from 32 bit to 64 bit. I am sure that I install the TDP for Oracle 2.2 on HP 64bit. 3. After I remove the TDP for Oracle 2.2 , I can't start my database. I got the error as follow: Can't find library /usr/lib/pa20_64/libobk.sl I have to re-install TDP for Oracle 2.2 again , then it's normal. It's so queer . If I don't relink the libobk.sl successful , why Oracle have to find /usr/lib/pa20_64/libobk.sl ?! Does anyone have any ideas on how to solve these problems ? Thanks Michael Hsu
TDP for Oracle 2.2 released
The Oracle RMAN can perform: Full or tablespace backup of a database while it is online or offline Full database restore while it is online or offline Tablespace restore while database is offline Backups of archive log files Block level incremental backup RMAN API V2 Support Oracle 8.1 has introduced a new RMAN Media Management API V2, which is supported by Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle, V2.2. RMAN Duplex Copy Feature Support Oracle8i RMAN V2.0 has new functionality. One such feature is Duplex Backup Copy, which permits the customer to make multiple copies of a backup on different media. This feature can be enabled by defining multiple management classes in the Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle, V2.2 option file. Multi-Buffering of RMAN Data Transfers During a backup, the network is often the bottleneck. Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle, V2.2 introduces a new option to turn on multi-buffering. If this option is used, the data buffers sent from RMAN are saved in Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle internal buffers, instead of being sent directly to the Tivoli Storage Manager server across the network. Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle then starts a new thread which will pick up these internal buffers and send them to the Tivoli Storage Manager server. In this way, RMAN does not need to wait for each actual data transfer to be completed via the network before reading more data. In many cases, this buffering can increase backup performance. New Synchronization Utility The synchronization utility in Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle, V2.2 will make more space available on the Tivoli Storage Manager server by identifying and removing backups that have been deleted from the Oracle catalog. When deleting backup sets using Oracle8 RMAN, in earlier RMAN versions, RMAN deletes the recovery catalog entries before receiving confirmation from the Tivoli Storage Manager server. In the case where deletion from the server was not successful, these backup sets are no longer identifiable through the recovery catalog. Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle includes a new utility that reconciles these discrepancies by displaying and, optionally, deleting files that exist on the Tivoli Storage Manager server but are no longer in the recovery catalog, allowing the user to reclaim lost space on the Tivoli Storage Manager server. Additional Usability Enhancements The new configuration utility makes setup of Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle easier than ever before. A new options file centralizes information for setup. Environment variables are no longer needed. This simplifies the establishment of multiple sessions, and significantly reduces the opportunity for human error associated with entering environmental variables for individual sessions. In addition, the new tdpoconf utility will be a great help in solving problems that can be associated with setup. For example, if the password file is not initialized properly, tdpoconf will report this error immediately, and so remove the complications that can result if this error goes undetected. New 64-bit Support for Sun Solaris 8 and HP-UX 11 Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle continues our customer commitment by adding 64-bit support for Solaris 8 and HP-UX 11 in this release. Effective Use of the Power of Tivoli Storage Manager The Tivoli Storage Manager server's capabilities include: Access to a storage hierarchy Migration (server Hierarchical Storage Management or HSM) through the storage hierarchy Management of tape media space Disaster recovery support including off-site management of tapes During operation of Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle, the Tivoli Storage Manager server manages the location of every object and manages the devices. If additional space savings are desired in cases of very high redo log file activity, customers can take advantage of the Hierarchical Storage Management functions on the Tivoli Storage Manager AIX or Solaris clients by ordering the Space Management product, 5698-SPM. Refer to the Reference Information section to obtain ordering information for Space Management. LAN-free Support The Tivoli Storage Manager Managed System for SAN feature provides the capability for LAN-free data transfer for Oracle8 and Oracle8i database data on Windows NT and Windows 2000. LAN-free data transfer exploits the SAN path by enabling Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle to backup and restore data from a SAN-attached tape library that can be shared by Windows NT and Windows 2000 Tivoli Storage Manager servers. Refer to the Reference Information section to obtain ordering information for the Tivoli Storage Manager Managed System for SAN feature for the Windows NT and Windows 2000 platforms. ___ Send a cool gift with your E-Card http://www.bluemountain.com/giftcenter/
