Re: AW: Unload db/Loaddb

2002-05-14 Thread Odd-Magne Sekkingstad

DUMPDB/LOADDB - is used when the database is corrupted, and audit db doesn't
solve the problem. DUMPDB increases the size of the database.
UNLOADDB/LOADDB - rearrange the structure of the database, this would in
most cases result in better search performance and a smaller database.

Interesting, ours went up by 25%, but my colleague did a dumpdb/loaddb, is
there a difference between this and an unloaddb/loaddb? or when should one
be used instead of the other?

 John.

I have performed an unload/reload of our AIX TSM server, and recieved the
 following results:

Reduced database utilization by - 21.2%

2002-05-14 Thread Jim Healy

I just completed a dump/reload of my database of a version 4.1.4 server
It was a 3 gb db showing 80% utilization. After the reload I'm down to 24%
My problem was with the 4.1 documentation, try as I might it wouldn't work
with the loadformat step until a ran a dsmfmt of the logvolumes and the db
voilumes first.

Rajesh,

I have performed an unload/reload of our AIX TSM server, and recieved the
following results:

Reduced database utilization by - 21.2%
Reduced used database pages by - 3,114,592
Maximum database reduction increased by - 22,044mb

Our TSM production database is 60gb in size. It took 8.5hrs to unload the
database, and 4.0hrs to reload the database. Two of the biggest benefits
that we saw were a reduction of runtime for Expire Inventory, and the time
it took to perform a FULL TSM Database backup.

Does anyone have a standard procedure for unloaddb and loaddb.
I have TSM 4.2.1.11 on AIX. Our db is 36GB and is about 79 % full.
Any gotchas while doing the unload and loaddb?
Any help is appreciated.

How long did these benefits last? We are going to do the same thing,
with a 48GB database. On our test system, it was redeuced to 26GB, but
I have no load there to find out how long the benefits will last, and
how often I will have to do this.

My db shrank a lot also, but re-grew a fair bit over the next week. I
suspect it will reach a steady-state value not much different than I
started with.

I missed the first message in this thread, but I have been testing this.
This is what I plan to do:

- wait for DB backup to complete
- enter 'halt quiesce command so the db should be consistent
- unloaddb (to disk)
- loaddb (from disk)

In testing, with out full size DB (47.9GB), it went down to 28.6GB. I
am very happy with the results, and am anxious to do it on the prod
server.

2002-04-15 Thread Zlatko Krastev

Matt,

many people on this list have larger DB. What is your concern about the
database - performance, DB backup time, ... ? If there is a problem other
than size provide some details - version, DBVols and LOGVols storage type,
etc.
Unload/Load may help to reduce the DB but may not as well.
You can argue against no off-site reclamation. At the end through such
reclaim not only tape usage is better but also chance for tape errors due
to aging is minimized.
