However, my best guess is as follows: You will need value units for the system hosting the new offsite server, unless you already have the system licensed for some reason. You will need the same number of value units you would need if you going to install TSM client software on the same hardware and have it send backups to an existing TSM server. You will not need any additional value units for the client systems that have backups stored on one TSM server now and will have backups stored on two TSM servers in the future.
Re: licensing question
In general the way I understand this would work is that if you are using server to server to send data to the remote TSM server, then you will need to license it. If it is just sitting waiting for a DB restore and moving of tapes, then it does not need to be licensed. It falls back to the active/passive active/active philosophy, similar to clustering the TSM server. If they are both active at the same time, then you need licenses. Hope this helps. Age-old licensing question
Hi all I know I started this in a reply to my backing up of virtual machines bit thought it best to start a new thread. My simple question is... how do I find out how much licensing costs? :-) I know it's not that simple though. My basic questions are this... 1) do I need to use the PVU calculations to work out how much a standard BA client license will cost or can I just pay for a standard client license? 2) do I use the PVU calculations to back up virtual machines? 3) are standard BA client licenses cpu based (or PVU)? Re: Age-old licensing question
It is all based on PVU. For virtual machines you are paying for the number of processors of the ESX server. Re: Age-old licensing question
Farren, This discussion comes up a few times a year from new and old alike. Here is the link to the PVU table from IBM. It changes regularly. http://www-01.ibm.com/software/lotus/passportadvantage/pvu_licensing_for_customers.html Sub-capacity licensing is available for VMs. However, if all your VMs need to be backed up, you are probably better off licensing all the procs on the ESX server. It most cases it is cheaper than licensing each guests processor entitlement. If you only have a few VMs that require backups sub-capacity may be cheaper. TSM license costs are based on PVU per core multiplied by number of cores per client/server. Also take into account whether you are using TSM standard or enterprise edition. TSM licensing question.
I am once again burdened with the idiocy that is TSM licensing with all the manual CPU determining, core counting weighted PVU madness that's involved. Just as a favor to others on the list, here are a few links that are helpful in this endeavor: http://www-306.ibm.com/software/lotus/passportadvantage/pvu_licensing_for_customers.html http://www-306.ibm.com/software/lotus/passportadvantage/guide_to_identifying_processor_family.html http://www-306.ibm.com/software/lotus/passportadvantage/IBM_servers_processor_family_identification_support.html https://www-112.ibm.com/software/howtobuy/passportadvantage/valueunitcalculator/vucalc.wss Anyways, my question is this. I am backing up some very old Pentium 3 servers. What is the cost per core on those? I'd like to think it's valued at 30 PVUs like some of the other old CPUs on the list, but I am afraid it's valued at 100 PVUs, like the other single core CPUs. Anyone have some insight? licensing question on TSM Extended Edition
Hello, I understand the calculation of PVUs and how to derive the $$ for the licensing fees for a node (server) be registered and backed up on tivoli. I have a cluster failover (window os) , one of the server houses two ips ( one is a floater ip) , two nodes using different dsm.opt files, both registered on tivoli, do I have to pay two license fees even though it is the same box? I was told that once the node(s) are live wired onto tivoli, licensing fee will be charged. I am not sure if we have to pay twice because of using different node names for failover. Ya, we were looking at perhaps purchasing a bunch of licenses to convert a site from Veritas Netbackup to TSM and the number is shocking. Ours come in somewhere a little above $2000 per host on average. Here is the basic CPU configuration of these 291 server-class machines. MFG Server CPU CPU Cores PlatformNumber of hosts. HP DL360 2 4 Linux 23 HP DL360 2 4 Windows 116 HP DL380 2 4 Linux 3 HP DL380 2 4 Windows 21 HP DL385 2 4 Linux 3 HP DL385 2 4 Windows 4 HP DL585 4 8 Linux 8 HP DL585 4 8 VMWare ESX 6 HP DL585 4 8 Windows 33 SUN T2000 1 4 UNIX8 SUN V1251 1 UNIX3 SUN V2452 2 UNIX42 SUN V4454 4 UNIX3 SUN V4904 4 UNIX7 SUN X4600 8 8 Windows 11 291 Because most of them are high end machines with multiple CPUs and multiple cores, the TSM Value licensing is eating us alive. Even after our corporate discount it will be $600,000+ for the TSM licenses and the first 12 months of maintenance. A backup software licensing scheme based on CPU and core count is RETARDED. Some of these are just compute hosts with just the OS being backed up, but we have to pay a VERY large fee because it has a lot of CPU horsepower. Needless to say they are freaked out that it will cost more than half a million just for the software. They are pursuing quotes from other vendors and Tivoli will likely not get this business. -Original Message- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Gill, Geoffrey L. TSM Licensing Question
I have a quick question on TSM Server Licensing. Going from 5.1 to 5.2, is that chargeable (license payment required)? I know 3.x to 4.x was chargeable, and 4.x to 5.x was, but is 5.x to 5.x+1 or 5.x+2 chargeable? -Tom
Re: TSM Licensing Question
Yes, unless you are on a yearly maintenance contract, in which case the upgrade should be covered. If you have 5.1, but they didn't ship you 5.2, that's an indication that you probably were not covered at the time. You can't download base 5.2, you will need the CD to get the license files. -Original Message- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Tom Melton Sent: Friday, October 15, 2004 2:41 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: TSM Licensing Question I have a quick question on TSM Server Licensing. Re: Upgrade LAN FREE Licensing Question
In the past there were two different clients: MgSysLAN (B/A Client only) and MgSysSAN (B/A Client + Storage Agent). For the server you will need Library Sharing feature. Since ITSM v5.1 the licensing was modified: B/A Client is part of either IBM TSM or ITSM Extended Edition. To get Storage Agent you need ITSM for SAN license on top of ITSM or ITSM XE license. Library Sharing now is not a separately licenseable feature but is part of ITSM Extended Edition. Thus you need ITSM XE processors for both client and server + ITSM for SAN processors for the client. You cannot get lan-free client, you get lan-free (ITSM for SAN) on top of client (ITSM XE). Plus your server needs to be licensed for ITSM XE, and because server and client cannot intermix ITSM and ITSM XE, the client has to be ITSM XE. Re: TSM Licensing question Veritas Volume Manager Question
Answer 1: The licenses you are asking for are irrelevant to SAN. They can be used in both LAN and LAN-free scenarios. The FlashCopy feature of IBM ESS and TimeFinder feature of EMC Symmetrix allow snapshot copy to be made at the disk array. Later this copy can be used for backups and other purposes. TDP for ESS and TDP for Symmetrix (both are now part of IBM TSM for Hardware) automate the snapshot creation process and the backups of these snapshots taken from DB2, Oracle and R/3. Answer 2: TSM does not iteract with the LVM. TSM creates backups from files, directories, filesystems and raw devices. TSM for ... also iteract with different application but again have no contact with the LVM used. The impact is just like the question does TSM support IDE or only SCSI disks. Consequentially TSM can perform both LAN and LAN-free backups from those files and applications. If you are asking about Veritas filesystem, it is different story - TSM B/A Client for Sun Solaris supports VxFS, and in ITSM v5.2 VxFS is also supported on AIX. Licensing question (technical, not pricing :-)
Hi, I've just upgraded a TSM server 4.2.1.9 running on W2K to version 5.1.6.2, but I think I did something wrong. I directly installed 5.1.6.2 on 4.2.1.9 without installing any intermediate version. After it I found that the TSM server was not able to load adsmlicn.dll. I installed the licensing component from 5.1.5.0, so the server now loads the dll, but all my licenses have disappeared. Furthermore I cannot register any license now. Anybody has an idea what can I do now? Thanks in advance, Imre
Re: Licensing question (technical, not pricing :-)
I did it once in test. In my mind the process is : Upgrade 4.2 to 5.1 then check License Upgrate 5.1 to 5.1.5 then check license Update 5.1.5 to 5.1.6.2 than check license I'm not sure but when you used the Installation CD there is a specific setup for license in those step.
