Instead of using the having the $metrics object and calling $metrics->getConverions()->getValue() try $metrics->getConversionsValue().
It seems that starting with 1.3 that is the way to it. At least that is what I see in the file https://github.com/googleads/google-ads-php/blob/master/examples/Reporting/GetKeywordStats.php.
