Is there a REST interface to Generate Keyword Ideas?

Hello, I wanted to know is there a way to generate keyword ideas using the 
REST interface? Having trouble locating any documentation on this.

I found that it is possible under the guides section under "Planning 
service" > "Generate keyword ideas", but I want to use a REST interface to 
do this.

Hello -

I did some experimenting of my own and I was able to get a close variant for 
the phrase: "track and field athletes from Belgium" but the variant was just to 
lower-case the word "belgium"

Thank you! Can you provide an example of a keyword for which the api will 
return a non-empty "close_variants" field?

Thank you! I hope the similar keywords functionality will be in the api 
soon.
I also checked the close_variants functionality.
There are close variants for the keyword "cyber security" in web UI.

When using the API 
(KeywordPlanIdeaService/GenerateKeywordHistoricalMetrics) for "cyber 
security" close_variants is still empty. Can you check this issue?

Generate Keyword Ideas by Country

Hello, 

I am pulling keyword ideas via Python following the below documentation.
https://developers.google.com/google-ads/api/docs/samples/generate-keyword-ideas

Are there country ids available to send in the API request's 'location_id' 
parameter in order to pull the volumes for the entire country instead of a 
city?
e.g. Saudi Arabia has 4 location ids (1012088- Riyadh, 1012089 - Jeddah, 
1012091 - Al Jubail, 1012092 - Dhahran). I would like to get an aggregated 
number for Saudi Arabia as a country.

I already tried KeywordPlanKeywordAnnotation 

 but 
it doesn't group keywords in a way it does on previous screenshot 
unfortunately. It relates to Refine keywords section in Keywords Planner UI 
(new screenshot)

I used this sample from API docs for keyword ideas generation 
https://developers.google.com/google-ads/api/docs/samples/generate-keyword-ideas
I got the result that is the same as in Keyword Planner tool. In addition 
this tool provides keywords grouping (screenshot attached). I really need 
to get them grouped via API. Is there any way to do it?

can access from this link.

have a trouble generate Keyword Ideas

I am trying to search for recommended keywords using the 
KeywordPlanIdeaServiceClient.
(I used *google-ads:17.0.1* and *Java11* and *Spring Boot*)

All locations support for keyword ideas generation API

I've sent this request for generate keyword ideas:

But I'm getting below error:

In Adwords API I could use 0 for geotarget and it would get for all 
locations. What is the location id I can use to get all the locations?

In PHP Ads API library, it was mentioned that this feature is not 
available 
https://github.com/googleads/google-ads-php/issues/737#issuecomment-1034880095

Is there any plans to support this? I can see a lot of people wanting this 
feature especially given that Keyword Planner UI supports this

i would like to get only 30 results at each request and not more.

You can manage the number of results seen by adjusting the page_size and 
page_token fields.

i would like to get only text and volume field to reduce bandwidth

keyword_annotation[] are provided in the GenerateKeywordIdeaResult only if they 
are requested.

with order option? and filter?
1. i would like to get only keywords ideas with volume grater than X
2. i would like to get only 30 results at each request and not more.

If you are looking to retrieve the information of keyword planner in the UI 
using API, then I would suggest using the Keyword planning feature of Google 
Ads API. I suggested this because you can retrieve the information of keyword 
planner that closest in the UI using this API.

I hope the answer will be helpful to others.

One question that remains is about the difference between the keyword 
suggestion metrics provided via the API and those available via the UI.
I understand thanks to previous conversations here that this is expected 
behaviour since the backends are different.

That said, would it be fair to say data from the API might be a bit more 
fresh compared to the UI?
And generally, is there something specific that can cause the deviation 
between the two, or can we safely say that the delta is random noise?

Here's the solution in case others in the group face the same question.

Simply add to the code provided here 
,
 
the following two lines within the main function:
keyword_annotation = client.enums.KeywordPlanKeywordAnnotationEnum   
   request.keyword_annotation = keyword_annotation  
The response will include the associated concepts for each keyword.

Fetch keyword concept while generating Keyword Ideas

As we are using the planning services in Google Ads API for generating 
keyword ideas on our application, we would like to retrieve the keyword 
concept, which is none other than the theme of the keyword.
We are referring to the same code

has been provided in the API documentation and tried to fetch the Keyword 
Ideas results

 and 
then the keyword concept

We are getting an empty array from the Keyword Concept object for any input 
we try, as the Keyword Annotation is null in the output. We would like to 
know if there is any way to retrieve those values as this is going to be a 
value add to our application.

Hi,

Some guidance would be appreciated here.

When I call the *main *function from 
generate_keyword_ideas.py 

I get back a  list object that has a placeholder for the keyword annotations 

however it is empty for all keywords in the set (I am referring to cases 
where annotations should be available, at least they in the keyword 
planner) 
Eg.
text: "nike air max advantage"
keyword_annotations {
}
, keyword_idea_metrics {
  competition: HIGH
  monthly_search_volumes {
month: JULY
year: 2020
monthly_searches: 90

All other standard metrics that are also available through the UI are 
there, but not the annotations. 

Can you provide some guidance about how to access it? Thank you

Ok guys, i just found the solution to the request body for generating 
keyword ideas. I have made the necessary correction and my code is running 
alright along with the Rest API.

Thank you for providing more context.

Unfortunately, getting the total count of the keywords results or pages via the 
TargetingIdeaService is not possible in a single request. You will need to 
perform paging in order to do so.

Hello again,

We are trying to get the total count of keywords from the google AdWords 
API using a certain categoryID by searching with this search parameter 
,
 
like in these categories here 
,
 
the problem is the results are paginated and limited to 700, and with a 
parameter like a categoryID for instance - computer parts, the results are 
in the millions even billions.

We just need the count of keywords not the actual objects, so it doesn't 
make sense to loop over the pages and retrieve all of the objects in order 
to get a single number(count).

Is it possible to get this number anywhere in the response, or at least the 
total number of pages needed to loop over and get all the results, it would 
make sense to put this in if it is not, for users that need to get all of 
the data currently the best solution is to make a while loop that checks if 
there are pages left, and if so, make a new request, this is very daunting 
work as we don't even know how many requests we have to make in order to 
get all the keywords.

At least with the number of pages we can use a for loop which saves us from 
writing a lot of boilerplate code, and opens up possibilities to get 
additional data like - count in one API call.

Is this possible? Does the API even know the total number of results for a 
search parameter? Or are the results already indexed and limited in the 
database and the API only knows about the first 700, and when you make a 
call to the next page it starts from the previous index?

Would love some more explanation about this.

referring to (if you can point to a page of the documentation, this will be 
helpful)?

If you are using the generate keyword ideas sample code (Python given here), 
you should be able to get the total count of ideas from the keyword_ideas array.

How to get count of keyword ideas from the Targeting idea service of the AdWords API

Hello again,

Following up on my previous question, I am trying to get the count of 
keyword ideas associated with a specific categoryID.

I understand that the api currently does not return the total count of 
objects in a single call, however I don't want to have to query all the 
objects to be able to get the count.

Is there a way to at least get the number of pages needed to cycle through 
and get all of the data, so i can, for example, if I know all the pages but 
the last one contain 700 entries, just call the last page and calculate the 
count.

If not could someone explain to me why this is, so I can inform my employer.

I work with Xiaoming and let me provide support to your concern.

I afraid that it is not possible as according to this link, specify a paging 
value, with numberResults set to 700 or less. Large result sets must be 
composed through multiple calls to this method.

How to get count of keyword ideas from the Targeting idea service

How can I get the whole count of keyword ideas from TargetingIdeaService 
without paging the results and making new calls for every page, I just need 
the number of keywords associated with a specific categoryId passed in.

this is probably because you must be using a developer token. You can try 
Google keywords planner tool and can see the real output from there.

Hi Muhammad,

Unfortunately, you won't be able to use the API to replicate the "Start with a 
website" part of the Keyword Planner. When using the TargetingIdeaService, you 
will need to specify a RelatedToQuerySearchParameter but you can include a 
RelatedToUrlSearchParameter.

exceeded error more often and the response time has been increased while 
retrieving the keyword ideas, could you please ask them to follow this guide to 
take the necessary steps to reduce the chances of exceeding the rate limit. If 
the issue persists, could you please share the complete request and response 
logs along with the client customer id for me to investigate this further on 
our end? For your other concern, the API Compliance Team only grant one 
developer token per legal entity and therefore, it is not possible to have two 
different developer tokens attached to the same manager account for avoiding 
latency issues. Also, the developer token do not have any impact on these 
errors, these depends on the overall server load at any given time as mentioned 
in the shared guide. Let us know if this clarifies your concern.

Keyword Ideas heavily throttled

Hi, 
I have a problem with Google Ads API in my organization. We successfully 
applied for the Standard Access token due to our internal tool that we use 
for researching keywords (monthly stats, ideas). Since like a month or so 
retrieval of keyword ideas is heavily throttled and it can take a lot of 
time for response. Not mentioning that Rate Exceeded Error is just dropping 
constantly and blocking response. Currently up to 20 people can use our web 
interface simultaneously and there are situations when they do not get a 
response and admin need to refresh the tool (surprisingly, then it works). 
We also have a development team that retrieves ideas in bulk (one by one in 
a row) from Python and they also experience problems when they query 
Keyword Ideas one after the other. 

1. What could be the reason for such a behavior and is it possible to lower 
rate restrictions?
2. Is it possible to have two different developer tokens attached to the 
same Manager account (one for our web tool and one for Python developers)?

Can I replicate behavior of Adwords API (listed above) with Google Ads API? So 
far I managed to decode point 2 and 4 but only with "include keywords": The 
negative keywords can be added to Keyword Plan using mutate method in 
KeywordPlanNegativeKeywordsService. The Search parameter for the Keyword Idea 
types is not available in Google Ads API. You could refer to the migration 
guide in future for the equivalent services in Google Ads API. Also, find below 
the services in Ads API to achieve the following:


Get traffic volume for input keywords (in batches of 700): You could use 
KeywordPlanService.GenerateForecastMetrics to get the traffic volume for input 
keywords in Google Ads API.

Get keyword ideas based on seed. I have option to include and exclude keywords: 
You could use KeywordPlanIdeaService with keyword_seed to generate keyword 
ideas based on the seed in Google Ads API.  Please refer to this code sample 
(Python client libraries) to generate keyword ideas from a list of seed 
keywords.

Get keyword ideas based on seed and category: It is not possible to get the 
keyword ideas based on seed and category in Google Ads API.

Get keyword ideas based on input website e.g. https://www.example.com: You 
could use KeywordPlanIdeaService with url_seed to generate keyword ideas based 
on the website in Google Ads API.


Is there an option to exclude brand names from results in Google Ads API? It is 
not possible to exclude brand names from the results in Google Ads API.

Migration from Adwords API to Google Ads API v2 - Keyword Ideas

So far I was using Adwords API to get keyword ideas and traffic estimate 
for my clients. I would like to move my Python programs to Google Ads API 
v2 since I experienced limitations when getting ideas based on website 
input.

Basically what I could in Adwords API is the following:
1. Get traffic volume for input keywords (in batches of 700).
2. Get keyword ideas based on seed. I have option to include and exclude

3. Get keyword ideas based on seed and category.
4. Get keyword ideas based on input website e.g. https://www.example.com

Now in the new online version of the Keyword Planner there is an option of 
*exclude 
brand names* from keyword ideas results. I was hoping that moving to Google 
Ads API will give me the same functionality as the online version. My 
question is:
1. Can I replicate behavior of Adwords API (listed above) with Google Ads 
API? So far I managed to decode point 2 and 4 but only with "include

api for keyword ideas with relevance

which api in Google Ads API should I use to get the ideas of keyword as 
shown in the ads ui below? The results shown here is different from the 
keyword planner tool, which can use 
the KeywordPlanIdeaService.generate_keyword_ideas api to get the results.

Thank you for reaching out to us.

As for your question: yes, the TargetingIdeaService usually returns the "red 
herring" entries for test accounts, which are dummy data. You may also visit 
this guide for more information about the Targeting Ideas feature of the 
AdWords API.

The new KeywordPlanIdeaService

results will be more close to the keyword planner UI tool but not exact.
You could refer in this release notes

to know more about the new keyword planning tool. Also the results from the
TargetingIdeaService

(AdWords API) may not match with the new API results as the new
KeywordPlanService is designed to be more close to the keyword planner UI
tool.

In the Adwords API the includeSubUrls

is allowed only for Placement

criterion. Setting this field without the Placement criterion will not
work. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Keyword Ideas

I have been trying both AdWords API and Google Ads API in an attempt to 
gather keyword ideas from a url... with varying success:

So far as I can tell, the results from these apis don't match what I see in 
the the current Keyword Planner ui tool, nor the previous version of the UI 
tool.
(side note: I couldn't get adwords api to work if I set includeSubUrls to 
true on the RelatedToUrlSearchParameter).

If my goal is simply to gather as many keyword ideas a possible from each 
Url that I pass into the api... what's my best plan?  (Helpful if the boss 
doesn't continue to ask "why do I see more keywords in the planning tool?").

I'm afraid, setting of custom date range is still not supported for 
TargetingIdeaService 
.
 
I could not tell on if and when the date range feature will be supported in 
TargetingIdeaService. However, you may follow our blog

.
 
Could you reply back with SOAP request and response of when you got both 
keywords clumped? For your reference, this sample code 

 from 
the library may be handy. You may opt to *reply privately to author* when 
sending the SOAP logs.

Keyword Ideas and relatedToQuerySearchParameter

What is the array associated in this parameter.

 $relatedToQuerySearchParameter->setQueries( 
['shoes', 'flip flops']
 );
$searchParameters[] = $relatedToQuerySearchParameter;

I thought it was a simple json array but I noticed it has single 
quotations. Does that even matter? I tried using a json array to replace 
['shoes','flip flops'], but it doesn't seem to work.

I even tried a simple string and it just clumps both keywords into one 
string. Any advice?

Since the issue is you cannot retrieve keyword ideas for the said keywords 
in both AdWords UI and API, this would be a product level concern. I would

as 
they are better equipped to assist you in this matter.

Not generating keyword ideas for some keywords.

Hi,

I am generating keyword ideas using api. But for some keywords it does not 
give ideas and return null. 
For example if i try to generate keyword ideas for keyword= "grow light" it 
does not give me any keyword ideas. What is the reason?

Generating Keyword Ideas : What is considered relevant?

Hello,

I'm posting based on the service, TargetingIdeaService. Every time I enter 
a seed keyword, my output returns a list of new ideas ordered by relevance. 
This is great! But I also wanted to know exactly how is "relevance" being 
calculated? My understanding so far is that relevance is determined by 
Google's own secret formula. If so, I can understand that. I am more so 
interested in what separates the first new idea from the second new idea 
and so on. 


To illustrate, let's say I input "keyboard" as my seed with zero filter 
parameters and one input parameter of RelatedToQuerySearchParameter. That 
will return a list of ideas ordered by relevance : "piano keyboard", 
"wireless keyboard", and so on.
Why is "piano keyboard" first returned, then "wireless keyboard"?


Any answers will be appreciated. By the way, this is my first time posting 
so excuse me if my question doesn't fall under the Forum's focus.

That's right. When using test accounts, the TargetingIdeaService will 
return dummy data. You may refer to this guide 
<http://the%20targetingideaservice%20will%20return%20dummy%20data./> for 
more information. When retrieving targeting ideas against a Production 
account, you will be able to compare the results to those from the Keyword 
planner as mentioned here 
<https://developers.google.com/adwords/api/docs/guides/targeting-idea-service#mapping_to_keyword_planner>.
 
The search volume returned from the code samples also returns dummy data, 
since you're using the test accounts. Let me know if you have any other 
questions.

Thanks for the reply!

Ok, so I had a look through your answer and ran a few changes and here is 
what still isn't clear...

I created an ad group and used that as the Ad Group ID, but that makes the 
query return nothing. Is it because I'm using a test account? Is it because 
my developer token hasn't been approved yet? Or something else entirely? 
All I need is for the API to return the keyword ideas, not really make any 
changes to the account itself.

Regarding the average montly search volume, os that also a dummy value? 
Because several million seems a bit strange.

As you can see, the keywords returned are just the seed keywords plus what 
looks like a hex number, the search volume and CPC are just large integers. 
The competition and categories look fine. How can I get the API to return 
the real values, or how do I decypher them?

Also, there seems to be a few entries called 'red herring' mixed in. Are 
they meant to be a distraction or some sort of copyright protection?

thanks for reaching out.
I've implemented it that way now (one call for each deal).

But I would like to be certain about one thing you mention:
quote *"unique entities that each require separate contexts for the 
TargetingIdeaService"*

I am creating one *TargetingIdeaService* and  reusing it while I iterate my 
deals changing the *keyword *passed as parameter in 
*RelatedToQuerySearchParameter->queries* .

Is this a correct use of *TargetingIdeaService* ?
Does this imply that theses entities are using "*separate contexts*" as you 
name it?


Also I would like to know what is the default order in the keywords ideas 
list I'm retrieving, compared to Keyword Planner which order these by 
relevance...

Each call to the TargetingIdeaService is only able to provide results for a 
single separate query. If you have 10k unique entities that each require 
separate contexts for the TargetingIdeaService, then unfortunately, yes, 
you will need to make 10k different calls.

your examples are all about ONE keyword (or several keywords related to ONE 
entity) and how to make an API call to retrieve ideas for that keyword.

Your example (in PHP) states something like this:

What I understand these keywords are all related to the same "entity" for

I've been able to setup an access to *Google Adwords API* to get *Keyword 
Ideas* from one seed keyword.

I need to go trough our DB to obtain keywords ideas to all the entries (to 
be used as meta tags...)

*Do I have to loop and access the API once for each keyword? Or is there 
any way to grab these in bulk mode?*

I've found info about *getBulkKeywordIdeas* but it's depecrated since 
v201409 [
https://developers.google.com/adwords/api/docs/reference/archived-release-notes]
 where 
it states:

TargetingIdeaService.getBulkKeywordIdeas was removed, use the get method 
instead

I can't figure out how to use the GET method in bulk mode - or if this is 
not intended to be used this way...

The chart that I shared is specific to AdWords reports. Monthly stats 
available via the Keyword Planner 
 or TargetingIdeaService 
 
are 
not the actual figures but are instead averaged out, over the last 12 
months. This data should be considered more of a trend line data than 
actual monthly data points. There's no set date on when the stats for a 
particular month are available after the month end.

Hi,

Since my team specializes in AdWords API related queries, I can confirm 
that the daily keyword search volume statistics are not available via 
AdWords API. Unfortunately, I would not be able to able to comment on any 
other Google APIs.
