Roughly 50 other cases were dismissed. Some were due to lack of standing,
some because the court felt it couldn't provide the relief being asked for,
some for being moot, some because the evidence was insufficient.

In the famous "Release the Kraken" case, the judge responded that you have
affidavits from people swearing that they believe something could have
happened, not saying they actually saw something. Belief that something could
have happened is not evidence that it did. Like I believe Ken Hohhof is old

[AFMUG] Dis virus be outta control

2020-12-15 Thread Nate Burke
Went to home depot to buy a $4 utility knife. Checking out required a cashier
override, and a birthdate entry. I looked at the cashier questionly and she
shrugged and said "new corona virus regulation, have to be 18 to buy anything
with a blade"...--

Re: [AFMUG] Dis virus be outta control

2020-12-15 Thread Bill Prince

I don't go into HD any more. I order online, with text
notification. They text me, I drive into the curbside pickup and
jingle them via their web app. Wait a couple minutes, and they
load whatever it is into the back of the truck and I drive away.
It is so much faster I can hardly believe it.

[AFMUG] SpaceX RDOF boondoggle?

2020-12-15 Thread Ken Hohhof
I forget who was complaining that SpaceX was getting RDOF money to serve
areas like universities and airports, but FreePress is complaining about the
same thing.

Keep in mind this is FreePress, which likes criticizing Internet policy a
lot. Also winners still have to submit their long forms.

I also saw that a WV senator was objecting money to Frontier which she said
was not competent to deliver gigabit service in her state.

See, now that makes sense. If on the other hand you were correct and it is a
box full of democrats……. Well, who would want a whole box of them in an

Oh. I completely misconstrued that. A democrate must be full of sledge hammers
and crow bars (and other tools of demolition?

Re: [AFMUG] OT: Too funny not to share

2020-12-15 Thread Chuck McCown via AF
Jaime, you do realize that only about 1% of republicans are bat shit crazy like
this, right?
Just like the 2% of demos that love AOC and socializm. The party is fine.
Everything will be fine.

The media likes to focus only on the extremes. You can always find an ignorant
redneck proudboy to spout some stupid crap for the camera. Just like you can
always find a “by any means necessary” Malcom X acolyte ranting about killing
all the whities. The news media is in the entertainment business. It is sad
the some folks believe the crap they peddle.

It does not matter if someone if fit or not fit (statements of opinions, not
facts), if they can get the votes they get the job.
He got the job, so he was judged fit by about half the country. Or at least
they hoped “fit enough”.

Let’s hope we don’t choose any more TV personalities for president in the
future unless it is someone like Alex Trebek.

In the end, if republicans cannot hold a majority of legislatures, governor
seats and the occasional half of congress, then yes, perhaps the party was
ruined. But so far, they are actually picking up steam. We have more
republicans in the house now than before the election. Doesn’t seem likely if
the party was ruined.

I ignore superbole and hyperbole and superlatives when it comes to this kind of
rhetoric. Lots of shades of gray. Lots of middle ground with lots of
perfectly sane lovely people there.

Brad Parscale did an amazing job of doing this (re getting people out from
under their rocks). Killer voter identification and turnout operation.
Pretty much done the same way you would run a local election except with
lots of data and on a national level. They knew their voters and they knew
they were going to turn out. The problem was that they thought they were
expanding their universe while the Democrats were working with the same
universe. Classic mistake. That's not to say the Dems ran a good
operation, it was crap, but Trump's dislike numbers are so high he drove
turnout of people to vote against him. If the Democrats were smart they
would put AOC in charge for 2022. She knows how to run a campaign.

Democrates was the philosopher cousin of Socrates.

Hes not welcome there because he postulated that cousins should not have

the son to ensure the order of superiority.

SolarWinds asks customers with any of the below products for Orion Platform
v2019.4 HF 5 to update to 2019.4 HF 6, which will be available today, December
14, 2020, at
customerportal.solarwinds.com.

No other versions of Orion Platform products are known to be impacted by this
security vulnerability. Other non-Orion products are also not known to be
impacted by this security vulnerability.

I dislike Solarwinds for many reasons and refused to use them even before this
hack. Just add another reason to the list.

Im not sure what this is saying, it sounds like what fireye isnt saying

able to circumvent the solarwinds security infrastructure, as solar winds
relied on fireye?

Anybody come across any good detail on solar winds impacted software? Like if
you downloaded the free subnet calculator, will they be taking your google home
account too? Imma be pretty pissed if they mess with my google play playlists.

I wonder if the disruptions with office365 and the weird spam filter changes
lately are related to cleanup prior to publication.

We are a tiny company and got withing a hair of pulling the trigger on various

I still dont understand how a private company gets the authority. It's good
that someone does, but it defeats the concept of no direct ownership of
dns. I take great exception to microsoft or any firm being able to collect
any info that isnt immediately shared, victim identifying info excluded.

Re: [AFMUG] Fireye

2020-12-15 Thread Ken Hohhof
I think they’re saying what they do is go to a court or a government security
agency.

The domain points to an IP address that is the command and control server for
the malware. They know the IP address, but I assume it’s important to take
over the domain name so they can’t just change the IP address. Many huge
botnets have been shut down by taking over the domain name used for the C&C
servers. Those operations are almost always months long projects with
government security agencies working with big companies like Microsoft.

You don’t always have to assume evil motives. They aren’t trying to use the
malware to snoop on people, they are trying to ID the compromised systems and
notify the owners so they can do mitigation. Don’t expect them to unearth a
treasure trove of documents, it’s the Russians who probably got those. You
were hoping for Hillary’s emails, weren’t you. And Jaime was hoping for
Trump’s tax returns.

2020-12-15 Thread Steve Jones
Yeah I read about the cname updates and all that. I dont think its
malicious, I just think it's odd that microsoft, or any single private
company has an authority that technically no nation was supposed to have.
I assume somewhere in the bylaws was a mechanism to corral a troublesome
domain.

I have no faith this was Russia because fire eye says it was, they cant
even identify suspicious traffic leaving their own network, and that's
literally their purpose in life. We will never know the depth of this thing.

Saw another article that solarwinds update server was identified exposed
last year with an account password of solarwinds123. The article alluded
that that was likely the time of the initial hijack.

It's crazy to think the billions invested among the 18000 impacted
organizations on security and it was that thin of a wall between "us" and
"them". A critical component with single factor authentication and no
password complexity policy. Even my Casey's app wants multifactor
authentication now (sending the code to the same device logging in always
seems funny to me).

Ope
