Oh. I think I've seen that somewhere. I think they say that it's
supposed to provide lower friction for blowing. I never tried it
as I though things would get caught on the ridges. I guess it
might actually be stronger in direct burial if they didn't thin
  the walls too much.

Yeah, they help keep things in place while you're assembling it, but once
the radio and screws are in, they don't really seem necessary.

Cutting of the metal tabs with something like an angle grinder with a
cut-off wheel in it would probably work pretty well. I think I used a 3"
cut-off tool last time, which didn't work too badly. I've tried just
bending them out of the way, but that causes problems.

It really annoys me, because all they would've needed to do is shift those
tabs over like 1/8" and it would've worked just fine either way. It almost
looks like they intentionally designed it to be able to flip over, and then
changed it slightly so it couldn't.

However, for some reason that I've never explored until this week, my
wife's "fixed amount" is 28 cents more than mine. It's always been
that way (25+ years now), and I always wondered, but never investigated.

Yesterday I finally investigated. Turns out, the extra 28 cents is in
the part labeled "fees and government charges". Looking into that a
little more finds a fee called "Palo Alto City UUT" in the amount of,
you guessed it, 28 cents.

Now, if I lived in the city of Palo Alto, I might consider that
normal. However, we don't live in the city of Palo Alto.

In fact, we don't even live in the same county as Palo Alto. While
Palo Alto is relatively close, it IS in the next county. Is this even
legal? How can a city in the next county charge my wife's phone (and
not mine) a utility tax?

Have any of you looked in your Verizon bill lately?

[AFMUG] Rooftop Pictures

2021-11-04 Thread Mike Hammett
Can I see some pictures of "tower" installations you've done on buildings where
they cared about aesthetics? Trying to sway a local property owner and he's
concerned about how things look like on his new buildings.

[AFMUG] corrugated conduit

Anyone have any opinions about using cheap corrugated conduit for areas where
the ditch is already open?
I have never used it. I worry it is not terribly strong and you probably can’t

I’m not old enough to have Cadillac tastes.. I’d prefer an ICON Bronco if you
are sending it my way.

Regarding the price, I was quoted $885 for the shelf and Inview monitoring
without any inverters. The inverters are $700/each and provide 800W of AC. You
can add up to 4 inverters, and surplus inverters act as failover modules. So
for a non-redundant 800W site, you could go as low as $1585. That’s totally
in-line with what I pay for an AlphaUPS unit.

Re: [AFMUG] Mikrotik CCR2004 PSA

2021-11-04 Thread Trey Scarborough
A bunch of those features aren't available in V6 either so converting
should not be to big of an issue. unless your running ospf with MPLS. I
have been running one of the latest RC4 or 3 since it came out. I have
had no issues with it crashing. I created the config from scratch and
did not upgrade from a V6. Some of the commands are completely
different. I wouldn't try to comingle V6 and V6 OSPF network either. The
ones I have running are only running BGP.

I just tried to upgrade a test router running simple OSPF from 6.49 to

config conversion code isn't working quite right yet.

Re: [AFMUG] OT: Palo Alto City UUT

2021-11-04 Thread Trey Scarborough
Is your wifes phone number one that would originate in Palo Alto. I have
seen this before some taxes are based on the NPA-NXX block I used to
have 2 phonelines one was in a different area code Dallas and Lubock.
Even though the billing address was the same I paid different taxes
based on where the phone number originated from. When I switched
providers and ported the numbers the issue went away.

On 11/2/21 3:13 PM, Bill Prince wrote:

Here's a curious one. My wife & I have cell service through Verizon.
It's a simple plan with unlimited text, unlimited talk, and more data
than we can use. We pay a fee for the service, and we pay a "fixed
amount" for each phone. So far, so good.

2021-11-04 Thread Chuck McCown via AF
There will be a pattern. I would normally expect them to be in the brochure
or spec sheet for the antenna.
But parabolic dishes all have a very similar set of sidelobes. First set of
sidelobes are down 20 dB or so from the main. And are a couuple of degrees
away from the main boresight lobe.

[AFMUG] Licensed Dish RF Pattern

2021-11-04 Thread Nate Burke
We were aligning an RFS 18ghz dish, and the climber said that he found a
bunch of Sidelobes as he was moving it around. I went looking for the
RF pattern of the dish to see what they looked like, with the Centerline
and the peaks and valleys going away from it, but I don't find the RF
pattern on the RFS Website. Is that something that the licensed dishes
don't do or have I just not found it yet?

Re: [AFMUG] 1U/2U 48V inverter/charger for LiFePO4 48V strings

2021-11-04 Thread dmmoffett
CET Tech support was very hard to reach. North American support only has an
email address and there’s a 24-48 hour turnaround between what I send and their
response.

I think they expect you to get support from the VAR.

It’s fine as long as you never need them.

Pretty excited about these units as a solution.. Bringing one into the test lab
to exercise, but they have an awesome interface:
