Re: [AFMUG] Improving WIFI coverage in homes

2018-10-02 Thread Dave
We us either a cambium E410 or 501 depending on indoor outdoor coverage
and maestro does the rest for monitoring.
We use scanners at the office to onboard any device for cambium networks
has. Our shipping guy loves it.
The force 180s make great little extenders or bridges to connect remote
shops and buildings together.

Its unbelievable how much coverage the e410 provides indoors. The E501s
units we installed at an ORV park with only 2 and cover some really
awesome acreage with campers.

2018-10-01 Thread Craig Schmaderer
We are using the Calix 844e as well. I charge $10 for managed router, probably
above 80% take rate. If we determine that the house needs a 804 mesh or if
they have problem issues with just include it in the $10 they are already
paying. So far I would say 1 out of 20 gets an 804. Hopefully it stays that
way or I might start maybe adding on a $50 setup or something to get part of
the 804 back.

We use Calix 844e gigacenter along with the 804 mesh solution and it works
great. We include the 844e at no monthly cost but just a $50 setup charge.
Then if they need mesh for more coverage, $20 setup and $8 per month per
mesh unit.

Re: [AFMUG] Improving WIFI coverage in homes

2018-10-01 Thread Ken Hohhof
Yeah, the WiFi outside expectation is big now. Probably due to Nestcams and
Sonos speakers and stuff.

Problem is, people are lazy, they don’t want to hear that the right way is to
run a cable to a satellite AP. They want everything to just work
automagically, with cellphone apps and the cloud and no wires.

Something like a Mikrotik hAP ac Lite is cheap enough I don’t have to charge a
lot per month, and they can be powered via POE out from the main router, but
they just balk at a cable. The mesh systems are a triumph of marketing to a
lazy, impatient customer base, even it they are expensive and don’t always work
that great. We’re not using Calix (yet) but I watched the video on their
satellite unit and I like the way the LEDs help you find the optimal location,
not too close, not too far. It’s not necessarily going to help with the
Sonos-on-the-deck and Nestcam-on-the-garage people though.

If it’s within the same building and people don’t want a cable, I point out
that Netgear sells powerline networking kits with WiFi built into one end for
around $100. Yes, they have to plug an Ethernet patch cable into the unit near
the router, but if that’s still too difficult for them, I start not caring
about their problem.

Been having a lot of customers lately calling about poor wifi coverage, I
always install the router in a prime location in house and when digging into
details further finding out that they are trying to use the wifi outside, or by
the pool or in the garage. What is everyone doing to accommodate these peoples
requests? Add another Mikrotik AP and charge additional $10/month for each
extra AP's? I want to offer a solution but at the same time make it worth my
time dealing with them. Seems to me i should be walking away with minimum $500
for getting flawless wifi coverage in their house plus more monthly fee.

We have not finalized how we are going to do this yet but we are
utilizing the Calix Gigacenters, the thought is we will buy the mesh units
and stock them, customer is on the hook for mesh unit cost, +$5/month after
that.

However... I just setup a the Comcast mesh for my grandmother. I think I
like their model better. Come buy it from us, set it up yourself, no
ongoing cost. I wonder how support works with that, but they have a fancy
phone application and everything. I think the Calix may be easy enough to
do this on without a phone application.
