[AFMUG] customer wants to switch WISPs to solve WiFi problem

2020-05-04 Thread Ken Hohhof
Prospective customer wants to switch to us, they get 24M x 24M and 18ms ping
on speedtest with their current WISP. It seems like the only problem is
their router is in the attached garage not in the middle of the house.

Am I wrong to want this customer to just work with their current WISP to get
the cable extended to a better router location?

You are completely out of line Ken. If their current WISP had any decency at
all they NEVER would have let them have a poor connection to their WiFi.

Seriously though, I am dealing with pretty much the same exact thing with one
of our customers. She "got disconnected from a Zoom meeting and had to finish
the meeting in her vehicle on her phone".It's totally irrelevant that she
has a 5000+ sq ft house and a router in the corner of it that shows lousy
signals all the time when she goes to the other end...

2020-05-04 Thread Ryan Ray
It would be nice of you to nudge the current isp and tell them, but they
should be watching out for this kind of thing. People are people though,
sometimes a little education is all they need. If they called their ISP and
got the brush off we would take that connection all day and do proper wifi.

Sucks to be selling a what seems like good service with a poor router and
wrecking customer experiences.

I’d just be honest with the potential customer and quote them what it’ll
take to make it work correctly. Use your expertise to sell them a while
home system. if they switch to you then they will probably be
happy...that’s all their looking for.

I actually read what you wrote wrong. I thought you said this was a customer
of yours..

I dunno. I'm working with this customer of ours to try to salvage the
situation but often it seems you just end up regretting it and being happy when
they move on to complain about their next victim, um provider. I had a
customer (who happens to be a personal friend) contact me the other day wanting
to know why our internet connection at his house wasn't very good because he
was trying to watch the live stream from church on Sunday and it kept
buffering. He said he had to switch to a live stream from another church and
"that worked flawlessly" so "why does your service have a problem with my
church?". face palm.

2020-05-04 Thread Steve Jones
It's a good opportunity to build bridges. Both with the ISP and the
candidate customer. Even if you dont gain that customer, solving their
problem with their existing isp will garner good will all around. Or you'll
just become free tech support for a crummy isp
