I'm about 50/50 on if across various platforms it's faster to search or to
type\browse.

Anything that has a search box, he types into that. I didn't even know
that the Grandstream UCM's had a search function, but he only uses that
to find settings to change. Is this normal behavior now? Is it actually

There is a setting that causes the curser to be an expanding/contracting

I'm like 'It's 2 clicks to get to the setting you want'  instead, he
clicks the search button, has to move to the keyboard to type, then
back to the mouse to select the setting it's returned.  I guess that's
better than watching the boss who continually loses his mouse on the

A few weeks ago the Windows search box was broken for me, but I was in the
middle of something where I couldn't restart my computer. That was the
first time I'd used the Start Menu to open applications in 4 or 5 years. I
only use Start to find the "shutdown" button. Yes, it's faster to search by
the name of the application than to click through the Start Menu for it. I
also use it for the Control Panel items I open most often. For example I
start typing "ethernet" and then click "ethernet settings" as soon as it
appears and I type "device" and click on "device manager".

I don't generally search for settings in a device. Maybe I'll try it.

Hey I loose my mouse all the time too, but I'm going to go with He isn't
using 2+ computers on multiple 4k displays.

Its the one thing I wish Synergy would come with a feature of a hot key
to find what monitor my pointer is on and some idea general area. It
would be nice if there was a hotkey that would turn the screen your on
with a red tint and leave a couple inch round circle where the pointer
is. I find myself clicking and then doing a couple alt tabs to find my
mouse.

I run most of my machines on MX linux and I do the same thing. Most
things I frequent are pined on my task bar, and anything else is
super/windows key is bound to a search bar. If not that I just run the
program from a terminal window type the first part and tab complete. I
don't actually use the mouse that much at all.

Re: [AFMUG] Are you reliant on searching?

2023-07-31 Thread Forrest Christian (List Account)
I've been tapping on the windows button and typing what I've been looking
for for years. Don't even know where lots of things are in the start menu
anymore.

Under windows 10, I did have most of my often used programs pinned to the
start menu, so for those I'd click on start and them the program.

In windows 11, I've started using flow launcher which is a highly
customizable windows search and launcher replacement. Hit the hotkey for
it, type what you want, and select. It also has various plug-ins to be
able to manipulate media players, so simple math and so on. For the
reason below, this is primarily how I'm launching windows apps today as
well.

I'm still searching for a couple click application launcher which works for
me. I'd like to do something like windows 10 did, but unfortunately some
of the design choices made in windows 11 prevents the start menu from being
useful for this as well.

2023-07-31 Thread dmmoffett

We've got a new employee in his 20's. He never browses for programs off his
start menu, but uses the windows search box for everything.

Anything that has a search box, he types into that. I didn't even know that
the Grandstream UCM's had a search function, but he only uses that to find
settings to change. Is this normal behavior now? Is it actually faster?

With windows its becoming about the only way to get to stuff any more, they
make everything 30 clicks deep now. Start menu isnt natively
directory driven. Same with phones and the billions of icons, its quicker
just to go to search for the app. Its bullshit.. change. Kids always
messing with the status quo.
