Re: [AFMUG] Geolocation updates

2023-11-01 Thread dmmoffett
One more note on this topic for our mutual education:

We had an IP block acquired from Cogent where we submitted geolocation
updates, but things kept reverting back to "Albany, NY"

That's because Cogent had a geofeed specifying Albany, NY for the whole /19.
We were advised to make our own geofeed and publish it as smaller blocks
because not unlike IP routing the longer subnet mask wins in most cases.

So empirically this RFC method does work with at least some of the
geolocation providers.

I guess the long term answer to this is going to be RFC8805 and RFC9092.

You stick a CSV file on the web matching your IP blocks to a city and state,
then add a comment on your IP Blocks with ARIN which contains a URL to the
geofeed CSV.

The geolocation providers who support this will periodically check ARIN
WHOIS for those URL's and then once they have it they'll refresh multiple
times per day.

If they have other data they think is more accurate they can use that, but
it lets you prime them with at least the right city and state.

Which services do you need to update when you move IP blocks or get new

I can't believe they all have their own separate databases. There must be
smaller ones that key off of larger ones.

I see the mention of Hulu on that page. Someone’s Hulu TV has the channels
from another market which is what prompted today’s musings.

Will the “IP Admin” at Hulu override stuff?

I have a similar list of geolocation providers already, but I can’t believe all
of these ding dongs have completely separate databases and don’t talk to each
other.

Also, since it’s now a thing that is service affecting and impacts TV ad
revenue, I hope to hell ARIN or someone starts a central repository so we don’t
have to update a dozen different people if something changes. I haven’t dug
into all of them yet, but IP2Location wants a notarized affidavit attached to
your request for changes. I have no idea why they placed some of our IP’s on
the wrong side of the state, but apparently they didn’t require a sworn and
notarized affidavit to screw it up.

Matching forward and reverse DNS is best practice in any case. Less
chance of email issues, and I feel like a state postal abbreviation in
the name might give the geo location people a clue.
123456-customer-dynamic-city-NY.hosts.myisp.com.

Ditto, had a new IP allocation about a year ago. Updated reverse DNS
etc and just used it. No issues. I am not sure if it makes a
difference but we do a reverse and matching forward DNS entry for
every IP address.

Yeah don't worry about that, just get them online and the internet will
figure it out automatically, should you have an issue with customers on
netflix for example stating they are outside of the USA then you would
submit for a correction.

Re: [AFMUG] geolocation

2021-01-08 Thread Colin Stanners
There's a few companies and organizations with their own GeoIP databases,
Maxmind is the biggest, and there is a funny (and frightening) story about
the risk in those assumptions:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2016/08/10/lawsuit-how-a-quiet-kansas-home-wound-up-with-600-million-ip-addresses-and-a-world-of-trouble/

Most companies try to do the work themselves to reduce the risk of networks
faking their location. Maxmind allows users to request updates at
https://support.maxmind.com/geoip-data-correction-request/ .

Re: [AFMUG] geolocation

2021-01-08 Thread Steve Jones
I dont understand why theres not a service for that. I looked and looked,
but may have been looking the wrong direction. the brothers wisp guide
covers the big ones, and i believe theyre still updating it. It would be
nice if that were an RIR component where the geolocation services pull from
there, but then you have VOIP location registration issues on VPNs.

Re: [AFMUG] geolocation

2021-01-08 Thread Adam Moffett
Pretty sure those services infer location based on data collected from
3rd parties.  Cell phone data, what WiFi SSID's you see, Cell phone
locations, etc.  Often they can get it exactly right, sometimes they
only get the right state.  There's someplace in the middle of Kansas
which is the gelocation coordinate for IP's where they only know it's in
the USA and can't be any more sure than that

If they're wrong now, they'll become right over time as the companies
get usage data.

Re: [AFMUG] Geolocation and Upstreams

2019-03-26 Thread Nate Burke
At least with VUE, you can sign into your account from a PC on the same
network and 'fix' the location. That seems to have worked. No idea why
it would have thought otherwise.

On 3/26/2019 3:05 PM, Nate Burke wrote:
Do the Geolocation services usually care about your upstream
providers, or only your IP Blocks? I turned up a new upstream last
week, and now today Playstation Vue thinks that I'm in Milwaukee
instead of Chicago. I've had the same static IP Address at my house
for over 10 years, and our own ARIN blocks for longer than that.

I haven't heard any reports from customers yet, but I can feel that
they'll be coming.
