[AFMUG] Windows 10 update speed

2017-03-16 Thread Nate Burke
So it seems like when a customer wants to update a windows 10 machine,
it will gladly and readily take all available bandwidth (and more). I'm
updating 2 brand new windows 10 machines in the NOC, plugged into
gigabit Ethernet, and they're downloading the windows updates at
<2mb/s. I would have expected them to just fly.

Re: [AFMUG] Windows 10 update speed

2017-03-16 Thread Jerry Head
I have seen an office with 3 Windows 10 machines eat up 70mb/s for 45
minutes.

Greedy little bit eaters they are.

I think they changed something. Windows 10 updates used to cripple my
home connection, but lately I haven't noticed them.

I have recently had an incident where some Windows system process is
downloading something from a Microsoft IP address and that download
crippled me. Settings -> Updates & Security didn't indicate any update
was downloading. I think I eventually determined it to be the Windows
Defender that was doing the downloading, but I don't remember how I
concluded that.

It's definitely better than it was for awhile, but we've had a couple
customers complaining that "their connection never works" in the last

It was pointed out to me here at AnimalFarm that there is a small part of a
trace on that circuit board that will contact the grounding lug in the shelf
when being inserted or removed. Not when fully seated.

So don’t have the green power power connector attached when inserting or
removing the card. It can be field fixed with a small dot of fingernail
polish. I will be fixing the PCB on the next run to fix the interference.

I will replace any unit in the field with advance replacement.

Ahh, that makes sense. I ended up blowing one of the those pulling it out while

vibration so I had no choice). Thanks for sharing.

No worries. And no, it didn't. I heard the slight arc when I tugged

it, all was good. I just thought I did something wrong with it so no
big deal. I love that I have flexible PoE and surge in one device.

I haven't seen any actual pricing yet, but the horns they have in the beta
store are cheap... that doesn't mean much, since they're obviously selling
the beta stuff at a discount, but the non-prism model is selling for the
same price as the PowerBeams and NanoStations in the beta store, so I'm
guessing under $100... and the Prism version (which I think adds filtering
and GPS) is the same price as the beta Rockets.

The advisory:
https://www.sec-consult.com/fxdata/seccons/prod/temedia/advisories_txt/20170316-0_Ubiquiti_Networks_authenticated_command_injection_v10.txt

The most concerning part? I quote:

Vendor contact timeline:

2016-11-22: Contacting vendor via HackerOne
2016-11-22: Vendor marks it as duplicate to: #143447
2016-11-23: Asking the vendor for a patch.
2016-11-25: Vendor responds that #143447 should be fixed for next stable
release.
2016-11-25: Asking for an estimated time frame for a fix of the
vulnerability.
2016-11-25: Vendor can not give a precise date.
2017-01-10: Asking the vendor for a patch and defined release of the
advisory for 2017-01-16 (concerning the SEC Consult
disclosure policy). Shifted the deadline to 2017-01-30
due to Christmas holidays; No answer.
2017-01-17: Asked for an update.
2017-01-17: Vendor excuses for the delay and responds that they got a
similar report but our PoC does not work.
2017-01-18: Explained PoC again
2017-01-19: Vendor responds that they received a similar report and
assumed a duplication. They state that our PoC never worked
and did not make any sense.
2017-01-20: Uploaded a video which shows a live command injection at an
up-to-date (v6.0) device and posted an assumed reason why
it's possible to exploit
2017-01-21: Vendor responds that they were able to reproduce it now. They
also posted the real cause.
2017-01-24: Asking whether the vulnerability is a duplicate to #143447.
2017-01-24: Vendor responds that it is no duplicate and that this
issue will be fixed as soon as possible.
2017-02-03: Asking for a status update; No answer.
2017-02-21: Asking for a status update; No answer.
2017-03-01: Informing the vendor that the release of the advisory is set to
2017-03-16; No answer.
2017-03-16: Public advisory release

I don't think that is a very good response, and makes me concerned about
any other undisclosed security flaws.

It's definitely better than it was for awhile, but we've had a couple customers
complaining that "their connection never works" in the last couple weeks, and
when I checked it was the same old thing with a couple dozen TCP connections to
13.x.x.x IP addresses completely killing the connection. At least one of them
said there was an update going, but it could very well be something like
Windows Defender.

I think I eventually determined it to be the Windows Defender that was doing

So it seems like when a customer wants to update a windows 10 machine, it will

they're downloading the windows updates at <2mb/s. I would have expected them
