[AFMUG] Can't downgrade mikrotik routeros

2016-09-28 Thread Darin Steffl
Hello all,

We are trying to install our normal mikrotik os version which is 6.32.4
since we have tested and found it the most stable.

The latest ccr router we received has 6.35.2 on it and we're not having any
luck getting it to downgrade to the stable bug fix version. Some mikrotik
forum posts say that you're not able to downgrade the software below what
it shipped with. I find this doesn't make sense because the os didn't ship
with the bug fix release, but rather the more unstable "current" version.

Any advice how to downgrade when the normal procedure doesn't work? Is it
possible to downgrade to a version lower than what the factory installed?

If not, would net install work to force the version we want? The way it is
now, there's not even a possible way to install the latest 6.34.6 bug fix
release since it's lower than 6.35.2

Any help is appreciated. Thanks

(Holy cross-posting, Batman!)

It is possible that MT did a board revision, and the newer revision of the
hardware requires 6.35.2 as minimum for the reasons Josh stated
(drivers/hardware support, etc.). However, you could certainly try your luck
with Netinstall.

What model of CCR is this?

Re: [AFMUG] Can't downgrade mikrotik routeros

2016-09-29 Thread Darin Steffl
Chris,

That's what I'm saying too. They shipped a non bugfix release which means
it is going to be less stable on the shipped version than I want it to be.

Mikrotik support came back and said it might be one month or MORE until
they have a bugfix release higher than the 6.35.2 version it shipped with
which is the "Current" branch and not the "Bugfix" branch we want. They
said they're going to release 6.37.1 first on "Current" branch then work on
bugfix after that.

This is not what I wanted to hear when I bought a bunch of CCR routers and
can't even put on a stable RouterOS version.

Re: [AFMUG] Can't downgrade mikrotik routeros

2016-09-29 Thread George Skorup
That CCR1009 he's using might be new enough that the latest bugfix
doesn't have the necessary drivers. I don't see any problem trying to
load the version he wants via netinstall. As others have said, you can't
really nuke it. Even if you upgrade the RouterBOOT image and that fails,
there's the factory backup loader. You hold the reset button while
powering on to force the backup loader for that startup sequence.

There's a catch to that too. I had some old 493's running 5.25 and I
wanted to update them to 6.something. Luckily this was all on the bench
because the first one failed to boot. The loader could not find the
kernel. For the rest, I downloaded the latest RouterBOOT image for that
hardware and upgraded it in ROS 5.25 *before* upgrading to 6.x. For that
first one, I think I ended up upgrading the loader via serial which then
had no problem loading the kernel. Now the problem becomes the backup
loader not being able to locate the kernel image. The backup loader
can't be upgraded, but I think there's a special package you can load in
RouterOS (which obviously has to work) to get it upgraded.

software below what it shipped with. I find this doesn't make sense
because the os didn't ship with the bug fix release, but rather the
more unstable "current" version.

Any advice how to downgrade when the normal procedure doesn't work? Is
it possible to downgrade to a version lower than what the factory
installed?

If not, would net install work to force the version we want? The way
it is now, there's not even a possible way to install the latest
6.34.6 bug fix release since it's lower than 6.35.2

Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Interestingwhen 6.x was still brand new I would routinely downgrade
RB4xx boards to ROS 5.x. So it certainly worked at some point.

Chris,

That's what I'm saying too. They shipped a non bugfix release which
means it is going to be less stable on the shipped version than I want
it to be.

Mikrotik support came back and said it might be one month or MORE until
they have a bugfix release higher than the 6.35.2 version it shipped
with which is the "Current" branch and not the "Bugfix" branch we want.
They said they're going to release 6.37.1 first on "Current" branch
then work on bugfix after that.

This is not what I wanted to hear when I bought a bunch of CCR routers
and can't even put on a stable RouterOS version.

I don't think it's wise to downgrade below shipped firmware.

Hello all,

We are trying to install our normal mikrotik os version which is
6.32.4 since we have tested and found it the most stable.

The latest ccr router we received has 6.35.2 on it and we're not
having any luck getting it to downgrade to the stable bug fix version.
Some mikrotik forum posts say that you're not able to downgrade the
software below what it shipped with. I find this doesn't make sense
because the os didn't ship with the bug fix release, but rather the
more unstable "current" version.
