Re: [AFMUG] fusion splicer recommendations?

2017-08-14 Thread Eric Kuhnke
If you ever have plans to do DWDM or splice long haul fiber you absolutely
need core alignment. V-groove fusion splicers are for last mile only and
for in-premises stuff (like 1310nm LX from basement to 20th floor of an
office building).

Core alignment is betterbut the difference isn't much.

If you have to splice into something older than a certain year (I can't
remember the yearmaybe 2000-something?) then you have to have core
alignment. I was told the manufacturing process changed at some point
and the cladding became consistent enough for cladding alignment to
work, but before that point it was core alignment or nothing.

I don't know if this is true with core alignment, but with cladding
alignment any tiny bit of debris can misalign the fibers. Usually it's
a little flake of the 250um acrylic stuck to the fiber or in the
v-groove. It's not a big deal, but it's a thing that might waste a
minute or two.

There used to be a huge price difference, but if I was buying one today
I'd probably go for core alignment too.

Fujikura has the strong brand name, but seems like people have success
with the other brands as well. I noticed the Fujikura 12s is clad

OH wow its Gerard I thought chuck found some place you had to trench the
fiber with a spoon. You seem to be as sporadic on these lists as me.

back to the subject at hand. I recently picked up a Trensbatter no thats
not a typo at least on my part. Its a clone of a Fujikura 60s. I have
used Fujikuras for some time so I am used to the interface. It is a
pretty good knock off. Only thing is the splice holders are not made to
be used in the cleaver then moved to the splicer. It was a little
annoying at first. After I got used to just moving the fiber from
cleaver to splicer I found I actually could get it where the bare fiber
was much smaller. all in all for less than 2k it has been pretty good.

No, but I've been meaning to. We just already have 2 splicers...but the
$3k core alignment is basically a copy of one of the majors and most of the
imported stuff I have received works fine most of the time.
