My first thought is that the Recursion Stone protecting itself every
month probably isn't interesting gameplay.

My second thought is that Stones are the sort of thing that only really
works when the rest of the economy is active, so that they have more
things to interact with and so that the opportunity cost of spending
coins is more interesting.

My current thought is to move towards a High Score based economy, with
the idea that we have a few games that feed into score (like Horses
already does) and that's the primary place wins come from. So I think
the next step for stones is to replace coin stones with point-oriented
stones that would presumably also make good targets for the stealing and
protecting stones.
