It would concentrate on basic and advanced computer skills. It is a misconception that a visually impaired cannot lead another visually impaired person, said G.A. Peter Kishore, principal of Andhra Loyola College, here on Wednesday. He was addressing the inaugural meeting of a month-long computer training organised by the college. He said the trainers from a Bengaluru-based NGO Enable India, Siva Sankar; Lakshmi Narayana and Raghu — all visually challenged — would impart computer skills to a batch of 30 visually impaired students from the college and its neighbourhood. Siva Sankar said the training would focus on basic and advanced computer skills that will enable the students to read, write and think independently. He suggested that the training programme be extended to other districts and said the department would support it. Fr. S. News- A winner all the way. *Karnataka’s Shekhar Naik, who became the first blind cricketer to be conferred the Padma Shri, talks about the game* The year 2017 has been a momentous year for blind cricket in India. After having won the inaugural T20 World Cup for the Blind title in 2012, India captured the second too, beating Pakistan in the final in early February. What was also special was the fact that the Indian skipper in 2012, Karnataka’s Shekhar Naik, was awarded the Padma Shri on the eve of the 2017 edition. Naik, now 31 and retired, became the first blind cricketer to be conferred the award. “When I started playing cricket I never imagined I would achieve such a feat,” says Shekhar. “Looking at me now, other blind cricketers are motivated to strive hard and achieve just like I did. Helen Keller, whose birth anniversary falls on June 27, is this educationist’s inspiration. Paramjit Kaur, Principal, Braille Bhawan Government Institute for Blind, believes that visual impairment is nothing more than a form of ‘limitation’. “Being visually challenged is a limitation – nothing more. Anyone can have a limitation. There’s no need to be ashamed of any limitation for which you are not responsible. I am not responsible for my visual impairment. Why should I be ashamed of it?” The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched – they must be felt with the heart. Paramjit cites Keller’s most famous quote. Keller could neither see nor hear, yet she wrote beautifully inspiring books. Several persons, including Dr S Tarsem, Prof CL Bhalla, Netarheen Association president Devinder Singh, Nimita Sharma and Yogesh Sharma, professors at Government College for Girls; and Sandeep Kaur who performed during the cultural programme were honoured. Dr S Tarsem inspired everyone with his words. His vision kept decreasing till he became completely blind due to a genetic problem by the age of 31, he braved the misfortune with courage. It will be a two days competitive program from July 20 –July 21, 2017 in which disabled candidates of various categories from different parts of India will participate to show their talent in the field of information technology and e-learning. The winner from each category may get a chance to represent India in Global IT Challenge for Youth with Disabilities 2017 in Vietnam in September, 2017.
