Re: [Ai] sharing my latest post for the Sexuality and Disability blog-disability, friendships and technology!
Well, I elieve Avinash would do study of social interactions-quantitative and qualitative--of blind and similarly situated sighted to eke out certain conclusions. For instance, I wish to study social interactions of blind bank officers and control group of sighted bank officers over a period of time, say measure how many times they went out with their friends and to which places, and then compare both sets... Just thinking aloud. -Original Message- From: Ai [mailto:ai-boun...@accessindia.inclusivehabitat.in] On Behalf Of Payal Kapoor via Ai Sent: Wednesday, July 05, 2017 11:08 AM To: Share, empower &Enrich Cc: Payal Kapoor Subject: Re: [Ai] sharing my latest post for the Sexuality and Disability blog-disability, friendships and technology! hi All, i am glad this piece has brought out the discussion of friendships here. there is so much we do to make ourselves considered as equals among our sighted peers; when in reality there is a definite difference whether we choose to acknowledge it or not. that, in no way means it has to be negative, but, if we fail to recognize and accept it, this can be detrimental to our own sense of self. i never thought i would feel this way until my interactions increased due to the virtual world opening up. like Shireen said, we want to carve our own spaces in the world of the seeing as equals since our abilities are only hampered due to disability, not lost forever. avinash, it will be great to know the final outcome of your research on this topic, since we share symbiotic relationships with our friends both sighted and blind. Re: [Ai] sharing my latest post for the Sexuality and Disability blog-disability, friendships and technology!
Wonderful, Payal. Refreshing to read that there are at least a few of us who are realistic about our disability and able-bodied world. Otherwise, there is always banter of banning disability from our lives even by the disabled and living as if we are non-disabled. Phrases like he has conquered his disability put me off personally. So, thanks for this realistic description of situation. I am sure most of of my sighted friends don't really know, or care to know how I function and what are my limitations. -Original Message- From: Ai [mailto:ai-boun...@accessindia.inclusivehabitat.in] On Behalf Of Shireen Irani via Ai Sent: Wednesday, July 05, 2017 12:42 AM To: Share, empower &Enrich Cc: Shireen Irani Subject: Re: [Ai] sharing my latest post for the Sexuality and Disability blog-disability, friendships and technology! very well articulated, and very real for a lot of us i'm sure. i personally hadn't realised, or rather, hadn't been able to accept for a long time, how real and how truly omnipresent my disability is, in my interactions and coexistence with non-disabled peers. in particular, the constant pressure to perform on a par, and often better than those around us, in a world so visual oriented is truly not very pleasant. we've often spoken about this, Payal.. how our own efforts of independence turns around and bites us in the behind, during the few times when we do need a hand or a pare of seeing eyes. like our independence were etched in stone, without exception. this piece of yours in particular, and our many interactions have helped me a great deal, with not penalising myself for all my inadequacies, and understanding the complexities of this blind/ non-blind gap. i'm truly grateful to you for articulating and putting out there, so many issues that need public addressing. few of us have the courage and the verbal dexterity to do this, like you do. keep'em coming! Re: [Ai] sharing my latest post for the Sexuality and Disability blog-disability, friendships and technology!
Great reflection Payal. You've put it powerfully well on the keyboard. Friendship is certainly a category of inquiry. And it plays a very critical role in traversing the stigma ascribed to disability. For my Phd, I'm trying to analyse and explicate the critical role of friendships in the lives of disabled people. One of my chapters is on unearthing how friendships help disabled themselves to traverse with the labelled identity and stigma attached with their existence. When societal norms and mores are antithetical to their inclusion and acceptance in the public life, it is relevant to explore and underline the role of friendship in the day-to-day lives of disabled people. Mailing groups such as Access India also plays a powerful role! Hi Payal, Wonderfully written article. Hats off to you that you have the courage to express your feelings, thoughts and opinions on a public forum. Good Morning, In General solution, Best follow web link for any train http://indiarailinfo.com/train/-train-puducherry-bhubaneswar-sf-express-12897/197/1232/238 To know coach position first in normal case 80% coach position match.. It will give a clear idea from behind how many compartment to reached.. many apps exist to know seat number and approx location in birth from door to door. In respective of each class... For Ac chair car follow SATABDI CC class.. rest cooli jindabad.. Or reached to any Assistance booth / RPF booth nearby or to Station manager office, they normally do their best.. Re: [Ai] sharing my latest post for the Sexuality and Disability blog-disability, friendships and technology!
very well articulated, and very real for a lot of us i'm sure. i personally hadn't realised, or rather, hadn't been able to accept for a long time, how real and how truly omnipresent my disability is, in my interactions and coexistence with non-disabled peers. in particular, the constant pressure to perform on a par, and often better than those around us, in a world so visual oriented is truly not very pleasant. we've often spoken about this, Payal.. how our own efforts of independence turns around and bites us in the behind, during the few times when we do need a hand or a pare of seeing eyes. like our independence were etched in stone, without exception. this piece of yours in particular, and our many interactions have helped me a great deal, with not penalising myself for all my inadequacies, and understanding the complexities of this blind/ non-blind gap. i'm truly grateful to you for articulating and putting out there, so many issues that need public addressing. few of us have the courage and the verbal dexterity to do this, like you do. keep'em coming! [Ai] About locating coach number and finding the seat inside
Hi friends, when a visually impaired travel by Indian railways, he face lots of difficulties even if he has confirmed ticket in AC or Non AC coach. I am also facing lots of difficulties while traveling alone. If you have any solution for the problems, kindly help me. 1. How to locate train coach in which you have reservation? Suppose I have my ticket in B1 coach, how to make sure I am standing at the right place so that I could board the train well on time before its departure? 2. , how to find your seat inside the coach? I agree that in first, second and third class finding the seat is easy, but it gets difficult if you have reservation in AC chair car. 3. Does indian railways provide any kind of assistance in boarding the train? 4. Is there any helpline number where we can seek help from indian railways in case of any urgency?-- Mohib Anwar Rafay Phone: +919 555 555 765 Disclaimer: 1. Re: [Ai] Inquiry of MBA course in finance for working professionals
Hi Vaibhav, it do not make any sense to do masters in distant learning. Your degree would hold no value. Now since you are already employed and assume that you do not intend any job change after your masters. So part time masters is the best alternative for value addition. I did my masters in marketing from Chetana's Ramprasad Khandelwal institute of management and research that is at Bandra east Mumbai. It is a regular part time evening classes. They also offer MFM that is masters in finance. You can check it on their website. In case if you plan a job change then part time also do not make any sense, than you need to think about full time. Although part time courses are AICTE approved, which distant learning or correspondence courses are not approved even if they are offered by universities. [Ai] New option for accessible travel in India
Dear AccessIndians, Some of you recently asked me about my recent holiday in Europe. I had an amazing and memorable trip, thanks to assistance provided by Enable Travel, the company which is offering accessible holidays for the disabled and elderly in India. They are already offering holidays at 15 locations namely - Agra, Jaipur, New Delhi, Udaipur, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Jodhpur, Kumarakom, Hyderabad, Kochi, Mararikulam, Bangalore, Mysore, Coorg and Goa. And they are adding more destinations regularly. So, if you want to go on a holiday in India or abroad, then I recommend that you contact Enable Travel. The good thing is that they provide assistance based on the disability and are willing to customize the tour packages based on the needs. It is also a great option for families with elderly persons. And I found the prices to be reasonable, not too high as compared to regular holiday packages. Do checkout the website http://www.enabletravel.com for more information. I will also encourage visually impaired people to form groups and explore places they have always wanted to, but have not done so yet due to lack of accessible travel options. Very nicely written article. Specially the point about living in 2 separate worlds. But it could be extended beyond disability and non-disability. Re: [Ai] Help needed to learn Jawa and Python.
Hello shakul , it is possible to learn and practice any of the programming languages even if you are a total blind screen reader user. personally i do programming in c, java, python etc. I'm a screen reader user using both JAWS and NVDA. python is really fun to learn. You can use the following book to learn python from scratch through some simple exercises. https://learnpythonthehardway.org/book/ i didnt try any online materials to learn java. you can try javatpoint to learn java. you can use the windows native command prompt to run and debug the code by setting the system environmental variables. the native cmd is accessible even with narrator. Hope this helps. Ready to help for any further queries as per my knowledge. [Ai] Help needed to learn Jawa and Python.
Dear all, Hope everyone is doing well. Could anyone please let me know how should I start learning Python? The Python Console is not accessible for visually impaired users and I'm wondering how do I start. Suggest me how can I run my code and how should I start it as a beginner. Same for Jawa as well.
